Cruz: ADA will Continue Under a Cruz Presidency
Windham, N.H., Feb. 2 - Sen. Ted Cruz affirmed his commitment to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) on Tuesday.
“When it comes to people with disabilities, I give you my commitment,” Cruz said in Windham during a town hall. “I will do everything I can as president to expand their independence, to expand their ability to work meaningfully, to empower them to have access and the ability to work and provide for themselves. I think that is a human dignity that every human being should be able and is entitled to be able to experience.”
The questioner voiced concerns about the future of the ADA under a potential Cruz administration because of the senator’s fight against government regulation.
While Cruz reiterated his support for the ADA, he said government regulations “far too often move toward stripping them (people with disabilities) of their independence; moves toward institutionalizing them, preventing them from working.”
This is inline with a previous interview Cruz had with RespectAbility.
“There are many programs that provide, but sometimes trap people in dependency,” said in November in Des Moines, Iowa.
Also discussed at the Windham town hall - Donald Trump’s run ins with reporters with disabilities.
“One of the greatest tests of character is how do you treat people you don’t have to be nice to,” Cruz said.
Twice Trump derided newsmen with disabilities, saying that Charles Krauthammer, who uses a wheelchair, “just sits there.” Trump also mimicked New York Times reporter Serge Kovaleski’s disability when speaking to supporters, holding his hand in a contorted fashion, similar to Kovaleski’s hands. Kovaleski has arthrogryposis which causes the condition.

You know, I’m a big believer that you convey a lot about your character in how you conduct yourself, how you treat others. I think one of the greatest tests of character is how you treat people you don’t have to be nice to. Listen, everyone knows how to kiss up. Everyone knows how to kiss up to their boss, kiss up to whoever has direct control over their lives. But how do you treat the clerk at the convenience store? How do you treat the cab driver? How do you treat people you don’t have to be nice to? There’s no meaningful consequence in your life? That shows a lot about character.
And every candidate has to choose how they conduct their campaign. I can tell you , six weeks ago, Donald Trump was saying everyday that I was his friend, that he loved me, that I was terrific, that I was nice. And now I’m an anchor baby. I don’t really think six months ago something profoundly changed about me. But what did change is his numbers started going down and our numbers started surging. And then suddenly, you know, every morning I pick up the phone and look at my iPhone to see whatever the latest insult is from Donald. And I’ll give him credit. The guy has some creative insults. There are a lot of mornings I wake up cracking up laughing. I go, that’s pretty good. If they’re really funny, I show them to the whole team and say, wow, did you see this one, it’s pretty great. He can do that. That’s his choice. From my perspective, I have not and do not intend to respond to him. (applause)
To the contrary, I’m going to sing his praises. I think he’s bold. I think he’s rash. I’m glad that he has energized so many people to get involved in the political process. We need every one of those people to show up in November 2016; that’s how we win the general election. So I’m not - and I think the voters of New Hampshire frankly deserve more than politicians trading insults and behaving like school children.
And so my focus, I’m going to keep the focus on substance and policy and record. I think policy and record is fair game. So I’m happy to talk about how my health care plan and his health care plan differ. I’m happy to talk about, on amnesty, the difference between Donald and me. I’m happy to talk about eminent domain and the differences on policy. But I’m not going to go into personal insults and I think the people of New Hampshire deserve from all of us to follow that standard. I hope that other candidates do the same.

Trump did not mock the reporter's disability. He didn't know he had a disability. He was making fun of the question. Other's around him said he would make fun of stupid ppl, and do this. He really got raked over the coals for this and he stopped this all together.

And I had to put my differences aside and start listening to what he says. And if you study his private side, he is quite the humanitarian. Remember, everybody loved Trump. I just never paid attention to all they hype. But he wants to save our country. And this was years ago now. He still likes to cut up and be funny. And sometimes he is very funny. But, this did not come off that way with that reporter. Sometimes, mistakes are made. Biden made them too. Told a man in a wheelchair to stand up and take a bow.

It doesn’t even make sense to say that’s what happened, when Trump has always used his hands to talk and often moves his arms around, sometimes almost wildly, but the reporter in question can’t move his arm at all, so how is what Trump did “mocking” the disabled man?
When Trump found out what was being said about him, his reaction was one of shock. He stated he would never mock a person with a disability, and I believe his response was genuine!!

Cruz went to Mexico during the snow storm in his state and the electricity was out of function. He should have stayed and support the people.
