    20 years ago - I heard this track deep in Rrajigar Mine, and froze in my tracks. Silent, I stood still, goosebumps running up my spine. I was awake - I was high. I had experienced the epitome of art, skill, and emotion in this track, unlike any other piece of music I had ever listened to before. It was beautiful beyond description. It was... Unreal! The moment, etched in my memory forever. 20 years later, it is still the same. I bet if you're reading this, then you know what I mean, because you felt it too!

      @@silentassassin47Indeed. I've played this track countless times since the comment 5 years ago! What's heartening is reading other comments from 10-15 years ago, all echoing the same sentiment. We may not know each other, but this track and the feeling kinda made us one!

    The difference with Unreal to every other shooter is this: It's gonna make you cry. Not Duke, Freeman, Turok or Serious Sam can emotionally touch you as does Unreal

    • @higgsbosontesticle

      It's weird that it does, though... I mean, if we compare it to other games. It doesn't have any cutscenes, narration or anything... it doesn't need any of that. The game is an experience and that in itself is enough. That's how I like to interpret it.

    • @rgerber
      @rgerber 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      yes yes yes. Please keep praising long gone times of videogaming and movies. For they are something special that needs praising. Those things will never be repeated. You can't just continue making things forever. Special things will remain special. I really love Unreal for what it is and never will this be repeated. Sad but also needs respect

      +rgerber I also highly estimate Freeman Gordon (Halflife series) als equal with Unreal. But no other FPS coms atmospherically close. Some Role games, played almost like FPS do so (Witcher, Amalur...), but no FPS.

      i think the closest i've ever come to being as immersed in a game as i was in this one was quake 2. but even then. it didn't have the funky soundtrack and the beautiful and wide open landscapes this game had.

    Fuck, it's from a time when devs made games they cared about and composers worked on music that expanded the experience...now games all care about looking "cool" and sounding "cool", they forget about things like atmosphere, tone, etc. and it becomes a dull, repetitive shooting gallery. Fuck, WHY WASN'T I OLDER IN 1998!!?!

    • @Makron5

    This part of the game: "You hear a strange growl. "What the fuck is that?" you ask yourself, having just pressed a button. You decide to investigate with your trusty auto-pistol at your side, ready to pump hot lead into some brute's ass. You enter a thin corridor, *click*... *click*.... *click*. The lights are out. Suddenly, the emergency lights are out, and suddenly, a low growl erupts from behind you, and... OH SHIT!!! You find a bizarre monster, you end up killing it, but almost dead yourself! And there's more..." - CmdrJSKFox

    Back when I was a small kid and played this game for the first few times, there was that area at the end of Depths of Rrajigar where you had to trigger those two gas tank levers, so yeah when you press both you hear a continuous loud noise and instead of it being the gas leak sound I thought it was some crowd cheering me and with (the first part) Shared Dig being all cool and happy I had always a good smile on my face during that moment.
    My god the good old past is too much for me to remember ;(

  • @j7ndominica051

    I listened to this music with subsongs in this order many times before I got to play Unreal with sound. The rip was probably created in Winamp with "Play After Loop". I imagined that someone calmly walks to a site above ground during the first song, "digs" during the action sequence, and emerges into some underground cavity eventually during the last section...
    Actually in the game we get to hear the songs in reverse order: entrance to the mine, battle with the skaarj in darkness, depths of rrajigar. The dynamic music is a bit broken. If we save and reload, which I find doing a lot, the game doesn't remember which song played last or is playing right now, and might switch from action to the calm shared dig for no reason. That happens in other levels too, the game might switch from music to silence, like outside the dark arena where music is started via event. Or outside the graveyard at the harobed village where subsong 0 is restarted when I exit the graveyard while retreating from the skaarj inside it. A status field of the currently playing song would help a lot, nothing particularly creative, then the game would start that song if it is not playing now or do nothing. Maybe all playtesters were so badass they didn't use the save function.

    • @DinnerForkTongue
      @DinnerForkTongue 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you play it in UT99 with Oldskool Amp'd, it remembers what track was playing at the time of the save.

    If you have the game, download the excellent Jet Audio (its a free and know-a-lot audio-video-player) for converting the music files in your Unreal/Music map into wav or ogg, and then a free mp3 converter (e.g. Illustrate dBPowerAmp is the simplest, or similar) to convert wavs into mp3 or wma.

      This is a tracker module. It doesn't use any synthesis chip but sample playback. Most likely composed on PC with Impulse Tracker. But again, doesn't matter, tracker songs sound the same on all systems.
