    This is not only good for small mobile home installations but to a typical home. Best video.. covered all details perfectly.

      Cheers! Yup, the house on top of our trailer is actually built to code, so it's no different to how a normal house would be constructed. :)

    It's awesome that you let Alan run away with this video. The previous question and answer format was slow... Having Alan just walk us through the details is great.

    Sure is looking like a house now. And since I've commented last a mate here in Blenheim is now a local contractor/builder for the same steel framing and has recommended a firm in Kaikoura who may make tiny trailers. Not ready to build yet but so reassuring even in a wee town I won't be doing this project alone as I previously thought, phew! When I have more details I will post and share with everyone.

  • @tinynestproject
    @tinynestproject 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Very interesting procedure, quite a bit different from the standard out here on the west coast of Canada. The steel framing definitely adds to the differences. I liked the attention to the top corners (with flashing). I will be interested to see how the whole thing mates with the siding, since the windows are set proud of the face of the building instead of flush with it like we did.

    • @livingbig
      @livingbig  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yup! It should looks really good. The gab has closed a lot more with the weatherboards on, and we will be using scribers around the windows to complete the look. :)

    How did you find a range of such great trades people here in New Zealand? World of mouth? This builder, for example, and your trailer maker are superb. (But we live in Wellington...)
    The quality of the contractors would be my single major worry in regard to a new-build and I would try to build as much myself. Learning on the job.

    Great build, I'm just starting my own tiny house in a few weeks. Can I ask what it is that you have used by batten which the cladding will be fixed. Am I right in thinking it's polycarbonate boarding cut into strips?
    Keep up the good work

    • @davidrobinson5581
      @davidrobinson5581 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jonathan Kirk that is just a standard plastic cavity batten. You can use H3.1 treated timber cavity battens.

    Have been following you journey and wood like to say that it has confirmed my desire to build a simular home for my self and family but it will have to be done thimes three. I was wondering if anyone has done one on a simmi trailer or is it lorry trailer in your part of the world ? And if so could you show it . Thank you an American fan

    Did you say your aim was to build this whole house for 20k? I haven't done the maths but I got a feeling this whole thing is going to add up to a lot more than that. Right now I'm contemplating a 1980 something Oxford caravan with bubble windows instead of a tiny house.

    • @livingbig
      @livingbig  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, we haven't talked about our budget yet. We will outline all of that in a future video and on our website once it's all compiled. There are some DIY builds in NZ that have been pulled off for around 20k though.

    Good tutorial,One question please near the end 18:29 your boys seem to be using a timber block to flush up the support bar to the sill before fixing/screwing it (support bar) secureCan i just sit and fix the window flat like that on the sill? Or do I have to pack it up minimum 5mm example using locator blocks clipd onto the support bar to create a gap for ventilation?or is the gaps just for the two jamb sides and header?I'm still learning, any help and advise will be grateful?

    • @arbucks2009
      @arbucks2009 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Councils here in new zealand require 7.5mm gap each side of the window to allow for foaming etc etc

      Living Big In A Tiny House Beautifully finished truck! However, aren't we trying to live more frugally? For $225,000 a person could purchase a huge piece of land and park a $20,000 cabin in the middle of it and live off grid and totally sustainable. I think I am more impressed with your project as it is keeping with the Tiny House plan. Keep up the good work, love your videos.
