The man is a paragon of powerlifting longevity and a fantastic American who continues to serve the public long after his decorated military service was over.
Captain (USN) Ricks is the GOAT! I had the honor and privilege of training in the same gym as a young Marine in Iwakuni, Japan in 1982. He was humble, without ego, and willing to mentor all us young Marines. Thank you for this interview as it transported me back in time and re-motivated me to keep leaning forward despite my age/injuries. Dave, another GOAT who would make a great interview would be Master Sergeant (USMC retired) Abe Roman. He DOMINATED the 148's in the 80's and had over a 600lb squat despite his tiny quads (sorry Abe) :-) Abe Roman and Captain Ricks are the best powerlifting mentors I have ever had the privilege of knowing and training with. I'm looking forward to sharing a platform with (and being humbled by) this Legend in Scottsdale in a couple of weeks at the NAPF championships in the 93KG session!
I competed in a meet in Fremont California late 80s in the 181s Rick won the class 2nd place was like 200 pounds less in the total he was just so much stronger then everybody there. I think he made the cover of Powerlifting USA in that meet..
I've kind of naturally been doing a lot of what he does, especially in last 5yrs - and I'm in my mid thirties - maybe I can do something wild in my 60s too!!!! 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼 loved this episode, there is no limit!!!
I went to the Junior Nationals that was held in Washington DC, there was a very tall guy for the Navy and I cannot remember his name. My Army friend and fellow lifter was on the All Army team and he was in the 275 classed the Army had a guy Capt. Joe Walden that was a great lifter 198 or 220's class. George Heschter was a SHW and opened his squat with 975 or close to it, he tried 1000lbs and missed it. Capt. Kirk was still a teenager back then.
Weekly undulating periodization works great for me. Squat heavy Bench heavy Dynamic effort deadlift Dynamic effort squat Dynamic effort bench Heavy deadlift.
WOW, this seems like one of the best "resources" I've ever came across, gonna do an article on this dude, and thx Elitefts and Dave for presenting this to the world of lifters.

I get ticked when people leave David Ricks out of the GOAT discussions.
Well Dave showcased him
This may be the first table talk that I went all the way through. Would like to see Dave watch his form in a powerlifting video.

One of the best episodes David is extremely intelligent and strong
David is a great inspiration!
Been training since I was 16, at 59 this gives me inspiration to not stop lifting!
Inspiring!!
Definitely want to see Kirk karwoski on the pod
"I wanna hold it!!!"
Legend, but IDN if Kirk, like Chuck, wanna do anything these days...
My first issue of POWERLIFTING USA was in spring of 2000. Rick's was on the cover.
Man, awesome interview. I push 8's on my supplemental movements and my main lifts have exploded.
You are consistently raising the bar my friend. Heck of a job Mr. Ricks. Love ya buddy.
Great tabletalk, as intermediate lifter at 52 love the information here, great steering on the questions, thank you

Dave just keeps getting outstanding guests.
I started training rotation in the ankles and it has drastically improved my squat. It’s similar how to you do external rotations with the hammer.

Great interview of a great lifter who also is a very squared away great person
Age is just a number. David proves that! I did a 580 lb beltless squat last year at 65. You only get old once!
Great discussion, great motivator for my lifts at 58😅
Big love to Superman Dave Ricksy!
Wicked dude!
