I always loved the scene with the Batwing. It shows you that Batman could leave at any point that he chose to. Proving once again that he's not trapped in an asylum full of murderous thugs, They are trapped in an asylum with him. Also, it's a shame he didn't show the joker changing position in the visitor center, which happens if you turn away and then back around again.
RIP Adam West. I literally watched his batman movie on netflix for the first time the night before this tragedy. Which when made the news that hit following this episode and that fact feel all the more unreal. Absolutely great person though. Great sense of humor, great take on the world. And you better believe im now going to get around to seeing that animated feature he recently did to reprise his role as batman
I seriously thought my video was buffering when you did the scarecrow part but then seen that the buffering icon isn't the same lol. Loved this analysis through one of my favourite games. Can't wait until Arkham City!
Joshua Rosales I thought my game crashed but then the game restarted “or so I thought “ and I was pissed but then I saw scarecrow instead of the bat symbol and joker driving the bat mobile and I started laughing cause I knew what I was in for
Actually, the zoomed out Scarecrow-level looks kind of amazing... Seeing the tiny platforms hovering over the fogy whirlpool, within the huge void doesn't make it look less scary or sureal, it almost adds to it!
That chequered pattern is actually the default texture for surfaces in Unreal Engine 3. It is also used as a placeholder if there is a problem loading a texture such as if the file is missing. Most likely what happened was the level designer didn't bother assigning a texture to those surfaces given that the player would never see them.
KattFisken Yeah I had some fun with UDK a while back, created a light-based stealth system and a cover-based shooter system for people to use. Got very used to that pattern since all my test levels didn't need texturing!
I'm kinda surprised someone who closely combs so many games for every little detail hadn't already noticed that texture or similar in so many otherwise unrelated Unreal games and guessed what was going on. 3D production experience must be more necessary to decipher such things than I thought. Or maybe he just doesn't play many Unreal Engine games? You don't even need a magic camera to find it, just explore most any Unreal game enough and it's in some odd little corner or obscure wall somewhere.
Using a checkered pattern do help to when developing in 3D environments. It makes it easy for you to see that is a placeholder texture and you get a better idea of the shape and proportion of a object. So it not uncommon to see similar looking patters in other game projects that do not use Unreal. Un-textured surfaces are quite hard to deal with.
The checkered pattern is the default texture/material that gets applied to any model and back facing polygons in unreal engine. It basically represents the UV space each model has and how uniform they are. Its particularly helpful when unwrapping a model (fitting a 3d model into a 2d space for texturing) and making sure no UVs are stretched or squashed.

I really like watching the off-camera series because it gives me a good idea about how game developers actually develop and design these games. Thanks!
It's because when you're playing the game you're immersed in the world and imagine there is actually a world out beyond the room you're in. To find it's just black openness is quite unsettling.
I think youre talking about the fact that i mention arkham city and then i pan the camera over to the cityscape. Funny thing is, it was so clever that I didnt even intentionally do this. That was purely coincidental.
You missed one of the ones I discovered without using cheats. When Bane is chained up in the glass building (before it is revealed to be Bane) you can see his outline and skeleton using the batvision. However, if you go up right next to the glass and zoom in with the camera, you can clearly see it is actually a normal mental patient model in the place of Bane.
Just a note there is a difference between deleting polygons not facing the player and backface culling. Backface culling refers to polygons that are 1 rather than two sided so for example if you are to go inside a cube that had backface culling you wouldn't see it at all because all the polygons are only visible from their front sides.
Hey, Shesez! Doing my part to help out, and I figured since you asked on the Arkham Knight video it would be appropriate to start at Arkham Asylum! Good luck with everything going on!
Backface culling actually refers to how a face is rendered! When looking at the back of the buildings, the faces are most likely not there because the artist chose to remove them. Backface would refer to if you fly inside the building and look outward, to the city for example - you're able to look through it, this is because the back-side (reverse of the face's normal) of the face isn't rendered! Absolutely love this series, it's so awesome as a game dev to see what excites players about things they find when navigating the game outside it's intended purpose :) Keep up the great work, Shesez! :D
What you are seeing is his face. If they actually put his face behind the mask they'd have to deal with clipping issues. The mask itself moves like a face.

Wow this brings back so many memories! Arkham Asylum was the first video game I ever bought with my own money and I got it only about s year after it came out. I helped clean my Grandma’s garage for $20 and bought the game on sale for $17 at GameStop. I was only 7 at the time but I still go back to that game every few years just to experience it again.

Basically where a geometry doesn't have a texture, the Unreal Engine will use that texture instead. The cube off to the side is probably a test for lighting in the scene.
This just means this game cannot have a disembodied voice without a character model to make the lip movement. I guess it’s hard to trigger voices lines without a model to trigger it.
