    Hi Dean
    We are the family you met at Kinder Low. It was so lovely to meet you and a lovely surprise seeing ourselves on the channel and hearing your lovely comments.
    We look forward to following you every day on your PW journey.
    You have been so inspirational to us as a family getting us out on to the Peaks.
    All the very best Brian, Sarah, Harriet, Jack & Sylvie (Weimaraner)

    That was great! Brought back some memories of 1973 when I walked the Pennine way. The first day was a big one. When we got onto the top before reaching Kinder scout there was a fog so thick that you could not see a person more than eight foot in front of you. There was no paved path and we had to take a compass bearing and walk across the bog through the fog towards Kinder scout for about half a mile. It was nerve wracking because we thought we might walk off a cliff any moment. Then in the middle of all the black bog we found a shallow sandy stream, with fine golden yellow sand. So we followed the stream which took us straight to Kinder Scout waterfall. On the other-side there was no fog and so we motored down the path. We found out later that four other people had been lost the previous day in the fog and the search and rescue were sent to find them.

    Dean, finished watching your Pennine Way videos and really enjoyed them. I too am planning to hike the Pennine Way as a result of it defeating me on my last attempt 50 years ago at the age of 16. I has been on my bucket list for 50 years. I also loved team Hobnob. I lived in England for 5 years and without a doubt McVities digestive biscuits were my favorite. They will be on our Pennine Way hike. Thanks for your journey.

    Just found these - amazing. I walked the Pennine Way in 1979 on leaving school, and have always wanted to repeat it. Now I’m in Australia in the world’s lockdown capital and am starting to make tentative plans to walk it again next year, COVID travel restrictions permitting. It looks as though the paths across the Peak District have been improved considerably - when I walked it there was risk of getting stuck in the bottomless peat bogs of the first few days. Very interested to “walk” the route vicariously, it really is whetting my appetite to get out of lockdown and get going!

    • @DeanRead
      @DeanRead  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching. The path has been improved a lot over recent years, if you can call the flagstone path an improvement which I feel you can. It's made some of the boggy sections much easier to tackle. I hope you have a great time when you come over to walk the route again. All the best, Dean

    I have walked this section of the Pennine Way two or three times, the last being in 1973. The path looks more like a paved road now, even over Bleaklow! I seem to remember that the Jacob's Ladder section at the beginning was the "alternative route" back then and we got up on to Kinder Scout by another path. We used the handwritten "A Wainwright" guides - anyone remember them?

    I did some wild camping up in the bleak low just off the Pennine trail magnificent views , then went off trail to try my navigational skills using the map and compass across the open moorland and ended up in HADFIELD ! But it was not an easy trek ,what may seem like open moorland becomes difficult terrain due to steep ravines scrambling through marshland and rocky ridges with bracken up to waste height …

    Videos like this tend to give the impression that the Pennine Way is a nice gentle stroll through pleasent scenery, Well It ain't. If you're not already pretty damn fit and prepared, in places it's a real ankle, knees and back destroyer of a walk, especially if you're not fully self sufficient and need to walk at a pace to ensure you make it to your accomodation each day.

    You will never know how pleased I was to hear you say that you would be unable to add (bugger up) your video by adding - music. The visuals are the easy part, choosing appropriate music is a gift, denied to all but a vanishingly small few who have the aesthetic sensitivity and good taste needed to match sonics to landscape. I have no idea what your musical aesthetic is having never watched any of your vids, but almost every you tube vid I have watched has been plagued with noise about as emotionally satisfying as listening to a vanload of grand pianos falling down the stairs, shallow, juvenile and irritating dross. For the most part it is better to remember that noise made with musical instruments is NOT a compulsory component of the film and it is better to allow the landscape to speak for itself with a little help from a low key explanatory commentary of the route and it's points of interest which you have done rather well. For that I thank you. It makes possible the enjoyment of a journey through an atmospheric landscape, a rugged lendof uncertain and and at times, bitterly cold wet climate which gives us a hint of the grit, the rugged independence and strength of character of those who somehow manage to wrench a living from their often remote and uncompromising surroundings.

    • @DeanRead
      @DeanRead  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching Barry. The music I use in my videos normally are tracks I create myself. I only ever use a short 15 - 30 second piece of audio as an intro and don't have it running through the video. To me the sound of nature and what is happening in the background is the most important part to savour my memories of the moment. I'm certainly not a fan (to each his own) of videos with a constant audio accompaniment as I'd rather hear the sounds of the landscape. All the best, Dean.

    Best season for this trail? summer or autumn?

      @DeanRead  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Towards the end of summer I'd say, that way you still have the daylight hours for some of the bigger days

    What where the distances you walked each day and how tough is it?

    • @DeanRead
      @DeanRead  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Check the video description for the final video. There is a link to all the distances, ascent, accomodation and maps in there. It can be a really tough route but it depends on fitness level and your ability to look after your body day to day. Thanks for watching

      Graham if you’re relatively fit it’s very achievable. I stayed in digs every night and rarely struggled.

    can the pennine way be walked without maps

    • @DeanRead
      @DeanRead  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's very tricky to follow in places so I wouldn't advise doing it without a map. When you are up on the moors the path sometimes disappears so maps and compass are essential. Thanks for watching
