  • Day 1 of a week long ride on the Pennine Bridleway. I've sort of forgotten how to make videos from the road, plus I'm on a new phone and my mic broke.
    Hopefully you might enjoy the scenery and even glean some useful details if you are thinking of doing this one yourself.

    The birdsong in this video is beautiful, I could listen to that for hours! Even if that does make me sound like a weirdo..haha.
    Another little adventure begins..but this time, I'm going to pace myself and take a break between each episode (rather that watching the whole lot in one foul swoop).
    I have not been following this channel for that long, but it is fast becoming one of my favourites on You tube.
    It's been nice to have the full "catalogue" of your adventures to follow; but I'm quite aware that if I continue at this rate, I'm going to run out pretty quickly..haha. So a more sedate pace is required..haha!
    Thanx Jethro, you take care buddy.

      I'm glad you are enjoying the vids but, yeah, definitely slow down a bit. I wish I was able to be more frequent with my uploads but the reality is that if I get 3 out in a month that is good going.
      As soon as I go super viral and quit work to be a full time cycle poet then I'll up my game a bit but until then you'll have to exercise some self control.
      Of course, if you decide you want to watch them all again while you wait I'm not goin to complain 😉

    I think i'm right in saying this is a TH-cam first to bikepack/film the whole trail.
    I looked into doing it in 2019, but at the wise old age of 51, i decided it would be a bit to much for me. That and i don't have a full suspension bike. I'm still quite old school with my old Muddy Fox that iv'e owned since 1997.

      @JethroJessop  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is it indeed? Well, I should have made more a fanfare about that I expect :)
      If it is then the reason is that it is a really hard trail. I'd probably say the hardest ride I've ever done. Even on a full sus bike just riding that surface and those climbs with all your kit would be a challenge.
      I want to see someone do it on a horse! As it's a bridleway you'd assume someone would have other the Mary Towney back in the day. I don't know anything about riding horses but I would have said a lot of the hills I climbed where not possible on horseback.

So I looked up your route on Google maps and the cycle hire place mentioned that they were opening up again, after the trail had been temporarily closed. And that descent you did is one I'm considering to get down there from the High Peak trail. Or maybe I'll go down from the north along the bit where you pushed your bike up. Great first installment of what I’m sure will be a most interesting series! Looking forward to the next leg of the trip.
    Question: when riding on the canal towpaths, is there generally sufficient headroom under the arched bridges for a cyclist, or is this something that requires a bit of care? I have learned from watching various narrowboat channels that the vertical clearances are often pretty tight even out in the center of the spans.

    • @JethroJessop
      @JethroJessop  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are mostly ok but you do have to keep an eye out as a few are quite tight. You also have to go careful as there is often no room for two people to pass underneath and no rail to stop one of you going in the drink :)

    • @JethroJessop
      @JethroJessop  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad you are enjoying the vids!
      For the first half of this first day I was using the Rode Smartlav+ mic but for the rest of these Pennine Bridleway vids I just used the built in mic on my phone (Pixel 5), hence the wind noise.
      I have just bought another SmartLav+ so should be back to my old (fairly low) standard of audio soon :)
      My setup now is a GoPro 3 Way selfie stick/tripod with a Quadlock mount and little clips that I made using Sugru to hold the mic cable in place. This means I can easily switch the phone between the selfie stick and the Quadlock mount on my bike if need it for navigation.
      I'm constantly on the verge of buying a drone to try and up my filming game but I just don't know if I would actually use it that much in the wild for the extra hassle of carrying it around.

    Great video. With regards to camping is it typical to just find a spot? Is it legal? Any advice on what not to do? I'm just trying to understand the situation as I would love to try this and I am a complete novice. Thanks

    • @JethroJessop
      @JethroJessop  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In England it is technically illegal to wild camp pretty much everywhere.
      I only do it in places where I can be pretty certain I'm not going to disturb anyone and will ideally go completely unnoticed.
      If you are considerate and responsible then you will generally be fine. Don't stay for more than a night, don't have fires where you shouldn't, don't climb fences or pitch on crops. read up on Leave No Trace and stick to it.
      In my experience, if you pitch quietly, out of sight of everyone and you move on leaving nothing but a flat patch of grass you will be fine. If anyone does ask you to move on you apologise politely and do as they ask without argument.
      If you want to try it somewhere you have a right to do it then look at Scotland and maybe some parts of the moors down in the West country (can't remember which).
      Further afield, Sweden and Norway both protect a right to wild camp and are amazing destinations to explore.
      I'm not an expert on the details of all this though and I believe there are moves afoot to change the legal status of trespassing in England that might make all this harder.
      Do additional research, don't take my word for it. Be sensible, have fun and if you find any great spots then let me know 😉
