As a 30 plus year Nikon user, welcome back. As someone who has also been doing a daily photo challenge, it has been a lot harder than I thought it would be. If you still have any F mount lenses around, get the adapter in the interim. It's how I've been converting
The Z8 is a magical beast. I’d also highly recommend the Zf, especially for low light work (best low light performance i’ve seen in any full frame body).
@@Aygross For some reason the A7s is terrible in low light photography. I had an A7sIII thinking that it would be amazing in lowlight but I was really disappointed.
I've never understood the whole "tape over the logo" thing when it comes to leica. The guys that are going to rob you have no idea what a leica is or what it costs. You're way more likely to get robbed for your $1200 iPhone than your camera anywhere in the US. If it gives you piece of mind then cool but I never hear about people getting robbed for their Leica and I hear about people getting their phones stolen all the time.
Personally it does give me a peace of mind. I use the M 90% for street photography and feel way better than carrying around my Canon milc with bulky lens. Especially with the tape, all black, the M looks like a cheap analog camera to the regular guy on the street.
You are correct. They are robbing you for the phone. It if they don’t see fancy perceived writing then they might just leave you with it. But truthfully we are living in a social media world and even people not in the know are now in the know when it comes to content. They are looking to upgrade.
I hate the attention my Leica brings, the number of folks who either stop me or stop to point increases without the black tap. So yeah I put the tape back. I just enjoy the size and feel of the camera with m lenses, especially the optical viewfinder. Sucks that it is a luxury item that draws attention just because of the brand. With my Fuji they noticed the camera when I took a picture, but nobody cared otherwise.
@@japandrej I am strongly considering one of the tiny Sony cameras like the ZV1 or RX100vii. So small, fits/hides in your pocket and will attract no attention. Today I feel people are intimidated by the sight of a large camera yet ignore cellphones. So, a tiny camera will fill that role very well.
I got into street photography back in 2018 with your pov videos and even bought a d810 and sigma 35 1.4 like you mostly use at the time and i’m still in the nikon system 6 years later. Using a nikon ZF now and i love it. Welcome back to nikon ☺️
I’m a Sony user, but much respect to Nikon for their resurrection. They were considered to be past their prime, but they were able to turn it around by releasing great camera systems! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Great video! I picked up a zf and pancake lens for my “fun” camera and it’s been a great addition to my z8 and z9. Simplifys the system, uses the same battery/lenses as the z8 while still maintaining excellent image quality.
I’ve made the jump to a Z8, because man it’s a phenomenal camera. I don’t know how people have just slept on this? Phenomenal for landscape and wildlife which I often do at the same time. Also a great sports solution. Hoping that a ZFii is somewhere down the pipeline in 2026/27 period because I’d love to get into that after trying one.
Welcome back! Z8 is a beast and really enjoyable to use. I have found your channel when you were using Leica, and it’s good to know we share the same system now. Keep up the good work!
I've had my D850 for years. I just picked up a Z8 about a month ago when they were on sale for $3,500. Never getting rid of the D850, everything that's so dang good about it is amplified by the Z8. I won't say never... if Nikon or someone makes a reliable F2Z adapter that works with D lenses (the ones that need a body with an autofocus motor) I might sell my D850. The 135mm F/2 DC and the Nikon 28mm f/1.4 D are just too dang good to replace. I dont have $2,500 for a plena and nikon will never make a 28mm Z lens that fast for anything less than $2,500. Honorable mention for the Nikon 85mm f/1.4 AF-D. Those 3 lenses alone are worth keeping a DSLR around. However, the video capability of the Z8 is what hooked me. Glad to have both!
It won’t give you the same optical and AF performance but i adapted my old F glass without af motors with the TechArt TZM02 Autofocus Adapter. Nothing for sports or video but for portraits absolutely usable. I tried the 100m F2.8 and 50mm 1.4 F glass (adapted to M and the from M to Z with the TechArt - Adapter + Adapter)
I really love your lens mentions here. I don't personally have the 28/1.4 D lens, but I've seen what it can do. Same with the 85/1.4 D, which I've lusted after forever but just never acquired. I'll also never sell the 135/2 DC lens, so keeping my D850 or another DSLR body around makes a lot of sense.
Evan, thank you for your video! We have shot Leica, Fujifilm, Canon, Panasonic, and Nikon. We loved the photos we took with the SL2. However, the auto focus and low light capability were lacking. The Panasonic had better low light, but the S1's auto focus was slower than the Leica SL2. The Fujifilm X-series met our compactness and light lens preferences, but they were not full-frame. Of all manufacturers, Fujifilm was the best for support. The Canon R3 and R5 were very nice cameras. I loved the R3; however, I wished it had 45MP at times. Canon also had very simple menus to navigate. We traded all our Canon gear for Nikon. Although we had a Nikon Z7 when we shot Fujifil and Leica, we traded it because the low light and auto focus were bad. Fortunately, Nikon improved low light and auto focus on both the Z8 and Z9 cameras, which are the cameras we use today. Have you found any Presets or Actions for Lightroom, Photoshop, or Capture One that can provide Leica-like finishes to Nikon raw files? To my naked eye, Leica and perhaps Hasselblad still generate the best out-of-camera still raw files.
I personally own the Z9 , bought a little after launch had to wait 8 months for it Worth it, such a beast so is the Z8! Enjoy the camera ! I am looking forward to Z9 II / Z8 II
I hear ya. For the same reasons I''m considering selling my whole GFX100S system and lenses because the Z8 is so good. It's my go to for just about everything.
Nice to see Nikon getting some love from a popular content creator. Im curious about why you're not considering a Nikon ZF for street photography. It seems like small size would make you a bit less conspicuous. Regardless, seems like a good change that will make your life easier.
I've always been a Nikon shooter since I went digital, but their video offerings were just lackluster for years and I used Fujifilm for video. Now that Nikon has caught up or surpassed other brands with their hybrid Z bodies I'm selling my Fujifilm gear (except my X-E1 and a couple lenses for fun) and building everything around my new Z8. I shoot action sports, portraits, and headshots, but also a lot of real estate video, and the Z8 can do it all. Welcome back to the Nikon fam!

It's definitely interrupted me a good amount of times but I personally love having those conversations with people when they ask questions about the cameras I'm using. I think you made a great choice switching systems again and looking forward to seeing more content! (sorry for the Yap)
Evan have a blessed and successful week. Also Evan you can put the Canon 5D Mark 2, Fuji XPRO2, Fuji XT1 and Pentax K20d as picture profiles on your Nikon Z camera as i have done that with my Nikon D5500
As a previous SL2s , Q, and current m10 monochrom user. I get it. I still have the m10 ( love it) but have recently picked up a z6iii and LOVE it. Need some Z mount lens recommendations. What’s your favorite?
Great video man and awesome to see your perspective. It’s just.. You bought a white Leica and did not see the attention it would grab ahead of time? I don’t understand this logic. I don’t know anything much about this particular Leica but maybe it was not intended to look discrete, unless you are shooting street photography under a snowstorm.
Did the same thing tbh always wanted a leica bought a q and an sl sold it use the the zf and zfc back like the old film camera I had in school and the df I owned previously welcome back
Love my SL3 and I loved the ZF I had for a while, so many great cameras out there, you really can't go wrong shooting what speaks to you! Regarding Sigma vs Leica SL lenses, Sigma and Lumix should definitely not be considered "3rd party" imo. They're all in the L-mount alliance and there's actually a lot of shared parts between the brands. Heck, the Leica SL 28-70 (and I think the 100-400?) are just rebranded Sigmas.
I have yet to shoot a Leica, and although I am curious about how the files look, my X100 stuff is just fun and easy. It seems like the Leica is more about how expensive it is to most people. Nice to see a collected and sober video about one for a change!
it's hard to get a system which work for you. always good to see thought process when selecting systems. looking forward to the updates coming to the mcm using it to track my progress and goals 👌
Two days ago I traded in my Leica M240 and bought a Nikon Zf body instead. I was about to feel regret because of emotional ties. I just saw your video and it confirmed me to have done the right thing.
every single photography friend i got i keep telling em man nikon was just so damn good to use personally. ive switched to so many brands but nikon colors hit me so damn much. too bad the lens are just a bit expensive on the long run but nikon z series cameras are just amazing.
Not in business, just a hobbyist, but I found that the SL2 really limited me when it came to autofocus and low light. An SL2-S solved the low light limitation but still was very lacking for autofocus (plus much smaller file sizes). I also found that a 24-90 Vario Elmarit lens for the SL cameras was not a great deal, if at all, better than the Z mount 24-70 F2.8. What held me back was not really having an improvement in the Nikon range for autofocus (Z7 II). Enter the Z9. All the Leica gear is gone.
Great vid dude! You listed all the reasons exactly why I never went down that road. You have replicated all of the things that I knew would happen to me and it didn't cost me a cent, to find out. One of those bodies you had, alone, costs around $10,000 here in Australia - criminal. Love my two Z6ii's and my clients always comment on the gorgeous images. I was like you, but with Fuji. I scabbed along with them for over a decade, hoping that each iteration would fix their armful of problems. Wasn't till swapped my business over to Nikon, two years ago, that I truly realised what I'd missed. Now I can get accurate focus, pull up shadows in an image , over 1,600 ISO, that doesn't turn to custard. I'm just filthy with myself for wasting a whole decade slumming it with such a crappy camera company.
As a backup mini camera you can buy the idk if its your persona... but a sony a6400 or a6700 and the g master 40mm f2.5 pancake lens or the 24mm f2.8 You don't seem to he a low light snob so f2.8 seems alright still and you could have a Chuck in the bag easy portable backup
as a new shooter of nikon, im excited to see your future videos of the Z8 in real world use that isnt paid for or loaned to you, at the cost of nikon. not too many content creators / photographers have done videos or advertise their videos as "shooting with nikon" outside of the trial phase a year or so ago when the Z8 & Z9 released. again looking forward to your nikon videos and shoots!
I had Nikon all my life, then switched to Leica (M, S, SL) because Nikon was not able to fix my D3x. I recently bought a Nikon Zf because I love the user interface. Really nice camera, but cannot replace my M for traveling nor can it replace the SL2 and SL3 for portrait work. I would consider Nikon if they had a premium line of lenses, not this plastic stuff (If I want cheap lenses I can buy Panasonic). This said, congratulations to Nikon getting back on track.
Same that's one reason I switched to the Zf it looks old school and people leave me alone espically when I switch back and forth to an F100 and have manual lenses and the screen covered on the Zf.
I recently switch from a sony to the Nikon ZF and it's been a pleasurable experience. I'll probably end up w/ a Z8 or Z9 when my work load increases (I'm a SAH dad right now, so I don't take a lot of gigs).
Went through this scenario. Switched to Fujifilm X-Pro1 to consolidate from Canon DSLR and Panasonic GF1. I loved the X-Pro1 but missed just being able to work. I'm not always wondering if there was a firmware update and if it erased my settings. Making sure I had 7 batteries. Will the Flash make it through an event? When it broke came back to Canon. I do still have a Fujifilm XF10 however I'm yet again straying down that path again and got a Hasselblad X1D II and already feeling the pain of dealing with a macro lens solution.
Great video Evan. I also have a Q2 that I use primarily for travel and have the same love/hate relationship with it. Question for you - what would you use to replace that? There just doesn’t seem to be too many options.
Nikon Z8 is, imho, the best camera release in the last ten years. It’s a one and done camera. The lenses are great but Nikon need to copy Sony and build compact well built lenses with aperture rings and a de click. Rendering is great on the s lenses but i don’t like the aesthetics and i think Nikon can do better. The Z8 takes Sony lenses really well with the Megadapt adapter and using m lenses also works great. I kept a couple of Sony lenses, the 50 mhm 1.4 and sigma 16-28 and they work amazingly well on the Z8. The video is top drawer and flicking from photo to video is instant. I struggle to find what this camera can’t do. It even made me a coffee this morning!
I grew up on Canon and Contax film cameras.Never used a Nikon until the D700 convinced me digital was here. I liked it and so I bought lenses. Bingo. Invested right? The answer was yes. Nikon has had it's issues over the years and Sony and Canon had abilities Nikon did not have but not enough to warrant the expense of changing systems.....for me. But I'm not a wedding photographer or journalist and I don't shoot video.....if I was any of these I'd probably be using Sony now, so it's a bit horses for courses.
I tried making the switch to Leica SL system recently but gave up for most of the reasons you mentioned in the video. I'm doing this for a living, as much as I like Leica SL I had to be real with me: cameras are only tools and the SL system is somewhat unreliable and extremely expensive, I just couldn't justify personally. Switched back to Sony with the latest and greatest GM lenses and never looked back.
40 years in the business and tried everything. Leica is an over priced "symbol" to own and say you shoot Leica. Or are an ambassador or have more money than you can spend. Its the person behind the camera that counts. Use the tool that works for you. I've never seen an image taken w a Leica that couldn't be taken with every other camera out there. The Z8 is my go to right now as well. Great video as always Evan! Keeping doing your thing.
I'm guessing you switched back because you're tired of drastically overpaying for equipment that's good, but not that good ! Certainly not as great as the prices !
I recently got a ZF and adapted M Mount lenses from TTartisan (50mm 1.4 ASPH - can’t afford a summilux😂) with the TechArt TZM autofocus adapter and I am blown away. Go try it. This might give you some Leica vibes back you could start missing.
I really don't think it matters. What we use, to be honest, the cameras are very good these days. There is not a bad camera on the market these days if you look at the cameras in the last maybe twelve years... There is not a bad camera
I am a Nikon user but the Ghost version looks so cool and beautiful! I don't think that you will be able to pass as a tourist with the tank that is the Z8! I was using the Nikon D90 and everyone thought I was a "professional"! And things haven't changed now that I'm using the Zfc 😆
Great video Evan! I made a similar switch recently. I invested fully into the Leica SL3 and a mixture of lenses but for the same exact reasons you mentioned, the system just didn’t settle with me from a business investment perspective. I hadn’t experienced Nikon but after trying out the Zf and eventually testing the Z8, I was convinced the reasons I went with the SL system were more met with the Nikon system. I also feel like the value you get with the Nikon system is so much more attainable. When I sold all my SL gear I had plenty of funds to put together a really nice Nikon kit and it just felt a lot better being able to buy a system and not feel the pressure of owning the super expensive Leica gear. Nikon has come a long way and I’ve been excited about their system. I sold a lot of gear to consolidate to Nikon and although I still own a Sony kit which I can use with the Nikon AF adapter that actually works, and a small Leica M system I feel like my eventual path will probably be going all in Nikon. But I guess we’ll see. Congrats on the switch back. Always enjoy your videos!
You need to use the right tool for the right job. Personally, I like Leica for my personal enjoyment and image quality. But I also use Sony for more robust work and photo projects. For me Leica’s are just a joy to use.
I wouldnt have thought that someone would have thought Leica is better at hybrid cameras than Nikon. Dont want to be rude here, its just *the one* thing I wouldn't see Leica in front. I see the SL3 that just came out in 2024 as the first Leica hybrid that really delivers on both equally.
Can’t believe the snobbish remarks about Leica. I have been a Canon user since 1974. Will be getting my R5II next week. I also bought my very first Leica this year and absolutely love the feel, look and photos. I also hate any attention to the camera and actually try to keep it hidden when not in use. All this from a retired non professional factory worker that loves the art of photography.
I'm currently with Fuji. And I've always been with them, but lately I've been thinking about swapping and Nikon is the only brand that really draws me. Currently I use the XT5 and X-H2S, and if swapping I'd go for wither the Z8 or Z6III, but not sure yet between them haha
It’s a polarizer made by Nikon, I’m going to talk about it more in the next video coming this week. I took that lens to New York and made a bunch of photos with it
Back to where I started. Thanks for watching!

Evan - I appreciate how well-spoken you are. Very easy to listen to. I'm curious if the Z9 ever appeared on your radar in competition to the Z8.
it's hard to get a system which work for you. always good to see thought process when selecting systems. looking forward to the updates coming to the mcm using it to track my progress and goals 👌
Two days ago I traded in my Leica M240 and bought a Nikon Zf body instead. I was about to feel regret because of emotional ties. I just saw your video and it confirmed me to have done the right thing.
The Nikon bodies are alright, but I adore the lenses, so I'm committed.
every single photography friend i got i keep telling em man nikon was just so damn good to use personally. ive switched to so many brands but nikon colors hit me so damn much. too bad the lens are just a bit expensive on the long run but nikon z series cameras are just amazing.
As a backup mini camera you can buy the idk if its your persona... but a sony a6400 or a6700 and the g master 40mm f2.5 pancake lens or the 24mm f2.8
You don't seem to he a low light snob so f2.8 seems alright still and you could have a Chuck in the bag easy portable backup
I am looking forward to purchasing a Nikon Z5 and the future Nikon Z5 Mark 2
@RanftEvan So did you sell your s5iix or do you still have that
as a new shooter of nikon, im excited to see your future videos of the Z8 in real world use that isnt paid for or loaned to you, at the cost of nikon. not too many content creators / photographers have done videos or advertise their videos as "shooting with nikon" outside of the trial phase a year or so ago when the Z8 & Z9 released. again looking forward to your nikon videos and shoots!
Have you considered the Z6iii for a second camera?
I upgraded my system to the the z8 as well. No regrets!
Remember when photography wasn't only about gear,me neither.
I did the opposite.. but instead of sacking my Nikon Kit i decided to keep both. Big diffrence between the Z8 and 9? besides price?
A Little Bit sad 😋 i loved the thumbnails with the leicas
Same that's one reason I switched to the Zf it looks old school and people leave me alone espically when I switch back and forth to an F100 and have manual lenses and the screen covered on the Zf.
If you want to add a fun camera to the Nikon system then you could always introduce the ZF. That would then eliminate the Leica Q completely
I recently switch from a sony to the Nikon ZF and it's been a pleasurable experience. I'll probably end up w/ a Z8 or Z9 when my work load increases (I'm a SAH dad right now, so I don't take a lot of gigs).
Why don’t switch to SL3? Instead Z8
Back to where it all began!
Feels good!
Welcome Home!
Welcome back, good to see what you do with it. Are you going to get a secondary nikon camera?
There is not a bad camera
welcome back! 😎
Are you keeping the Panasonic S5ii? I know you liked that Sigma 12mm F1.8 lens.
Still using the Lumix?
Sheesh! Can't wait to get into this video
Welcome back to the Nikon fam :)
Yihii, welcome back
WELCOME BACK!
Why Z8 and not Z9?
Weight, size and price
You need to use the right tool for the right job. Personally, I like Leica for my personal enjoyment and image quality. But I also use Sony for more robust work and photo projects. For me Leica’s are just a joy to use.
Ok, I feel dumb here but what's the difference between a book and a zine?
Mpb is awesome!
Nikon is doing amazing currently, but the lenses are just to massive for me most of the time
Z8 ftw
Just switched from Sony to Black Magic. Best decision ever. I’ll miss autofocus but it was hindering my growth
Yesssss finally I kinda felt like I got left 😂
Haha everything comes full circle
Can’t believe the snobbish remarks about Leica. I have been a Canon user since 1974. Will be getting my R5II next week. I also bought my very first Leica this year and absolutely love the feel, look and photos. I also hate any attention to the camera and actually try to keep it hidden when not in use. All this from a retired non professional factory worker that loves the art of photography.
The more I use my Z8 the more it impresses me.
I feel like you had a lot of expectations from the Q2 to do something it was not meant to.
I'm currently with Fuji. And I've always been with them, but lately I've been thinking about swapping and Nikon is the only brand that really draws me. Currently I use the XT5 and X-H2S, and if swapping I'd go for wither the Z8 or Z6III, but not sure yet between them haha
I got an xT3 and I just bought a Nikon zf, phenomenal camera!! Low light and global image quality are top noch.
@@TheMaLeKaLMoRTe ZF hasn't really caught my eye. The Z6III or Z8 have thought...
Team Nikon! May I ask what nd filter did you purchased for your 14-24?
It’s a polarizer made by Nikon, I’m going to talk about it more in the next video coming this week. I took that lens to New York and made a bunch of photos with it
Nice video! Do you have a CPL filter favorite or recommendation?
Nothing in particular, tiffen filters have always been fine for me
@@RanftEvan thank you Sir. There are so many brands, but will take a look at Tiffen.
Great Video!!
