If you want to follow the daily photo project I mentioned at the end this video is the link to that instagram- instagram.com/evanranftphoto. This lens really surprised me and I had a lot of fun making these photos. Thanks for watching!
The best thing about having multiple cameras is that they can restrict you, enable you and inspire you in different ways. I finally got my Leica Q3 in November and I love how it reminds me of shooting with my old Nikon FA film camera from 1983 (but without the hassle of processing film). It is great for casual things. At the same time though, I love my main Sony system, and I almost prefer the A7R3 paired with the Sony 35mm F1.8 for similar situations as the Q3. I also love a proper pocketable camera,.... one that fits in a jeans pocket...
I own this baby. I mostly use it with my ZF. But when I travel, I take my Z8 with the 24-70 F2.8 and I toss this little lens in my bag for lazy days when I just want to walk around NY, Vegas, etc... with only the Z8 and pancake.
As already mentioned by others, the 52mm filters were the standard for Nikon MF lenses ranging from 20mm f/3.5 up to 200mm f/4. Only the very expensive lenses with higher f-stops required larger filters, but the 50 mm f/1.2 was also compatible with 52mm filters.
I have the Nikon d200 and ZFC, both great love them. I use the TTartisan 25mm for the zfc which is 35mm equivalent it’s a fantastic lens all manual though but gives out amazing photo quality. With my d200 I have a zoom lens and 50mm prime both are great, tend to shoot with the 50mm more often but the zoom is always a great option just kinda heavy.
I shoot a Z5. I was debating on getting a ZFc or Z30 and picking up this lens for it. I have the Viltrox 24mm but i still think the Nikon 26mm would be good on apsc. I love your shots with it!
I use the Nikon Z8 w/24-70 2.8S / 105 2.8S for my woodland photography, but when I'm out with the family I bought a Canon 6D + 50 1.8 STM just for the fun factor. Both cameras make me want to shoot. So ill probably pick up the stellar Z 50 1.8 S for the Z8 & let my son use the 6D.
I brought Z 26mm this week and already took 1500 photos. It is very sharp in F2.8 and color is s line mood. I think I will continue to use this lens for my Z6ii at least six month for my street photography.
I tried a little bit of everything to be a suitable replacement for the Q2 including this setup. I think you hit it towards the end that the setup is all about making you want to take pictures. That being said...I did eventually replace the Q2 but with a Q3. This definitely hits above it's pricetag but there is just something visceral with the Q's I still adore. I lasted a week with the X100v and really have no interest waiting in line to try the x100vi
I did photography a few weddings back in the day with Nikon film cameras and no one had a issue with the lens noise. But keep in mind we did not take a lot of photos like we do today with digital. Most weddings photographers took about 250 for 8 hours of coverage.
Back in the 80s, 52mm filters were common. On the top of my head, my Canon 50mm f1.8 FD lens used this filter. lol I think this will go well on my Zf camera.
1:03 - sensor-guard shutter doesn't close so either you set the camera to not use that shutter, or you left the camera powered "On". Nikon want you to set it to "Off" when you swap lenses. And so they make this shutter dependent on the On/Off situation. Is that important? No and yes. When you switch power Off on the camera, this also locks moving parts in your lenses (floating elements, motors, and VR parts). I'm inclined to think that it is more important than not to switch off.
I was going to get the 26mm f2.8 but went with the 28mm f2.8 instead. Did get a polarizing filter with as well. Both are great lenes for the $. Love it on my new Zf!
I have the 26/2.8 in use since it hit the shelves on my Z8 and sharpness is very good.Ergonomics on the Z8 is much better than the Q series , which are too front heavy.I sold my Q2 monochrome for this reason.
My first prime was a 35mm for the D3500. Fell in love, also a 52 filter. I thought about upgrading still in Nikon but I kinda want the feel to be different so I've also been looking at Sony pretty hard.
I thought it would be the 26mm as soon as i read the title Good kit 💪🏼 Edit: Kinda cool to see you shoot more Nikon again. Been following since 2017, so I remember the good old Nikon DSLR and Sigma Prime times. I got myself the even cheaper 28 f/2.8 on the Z6 and it feels pretty solid. Yet the 26mm is the one to go for a higher mpx camera, but in Austria it goes for about 600€, which is 3 times the price I paid for the 28mm😐
I love that lens. I will tell you it looks better on the Zf than the Z8. On a flip, I just got the 28-400 zoom and it looks better on the Z8. The glass that Nikon is coming up with for the Z mounts have awed me.
Haha idk I kinda like the funny look it has on the full frame by but I definitely agree that on the zf it’s a perfect combo. Doing this test definitely makes me want to try out some other glass so maybe a 24-400 is a good place to start. I want to get out to Tennessee eventually and a telephoto would be good to have
Loved many Nikon DSLR bodies, D850 my last, after moving on from Canon, go figure. But I moved on to Sony and now also shoot Leica mostly though refuse to sell the A1 and a few lens as I feel that will be my last “mirrorless” and it is such a fine one at that. But yeah, I love my Q3 but my M10-R is the camera that leaves the house with me everyday. Do it Evan! Find an M that works for you, just my .02 worth.
I just picked up the 40mm f2 and noticed that the quality isn’t as good as the other lenses but it’s has a certain character. Could just be my bad skills and that’s ok. It’s fun to shoot with.
I'm at a crossroad, i shoot portraits/headshots, and video on stage at clubs/events. Currently shooting with the s5iix and sl2, 24-70 s pro, 50 sl lux and 90 apo. Was hoping the sl3 would be able to replace both s5iix and sl2 but its not there yet. Whats your thoughts on the z8 with their 24-70, and 85 1.2/135 plena? thoughts on skin tone, OOF rendering, editing? But I also love the feel of the sl system.
The 26 is smaller, sharper, and has a metal mount (I don’t do plastic lens mounts). IMO the 28 is closer to a muffin than a pancake. But both are excellent lenses.
For me the biggest difference will be close up photography, the 28 loss the sharpness as soon as the object start to be less than 1m, the 26 hold up very well
Used 52mm filters can be found easily online reasonably Nikon used to have 52mm as standard across its lens lineup size back in the old days all vintage lenses came with 52mm
Nikon should make retro style range finder and more compact lenses. They gonna hit Fuji market really hard with those. Fuji is going big lenses and compact lenses are not in sight anymore
Even in Dslr era, Nikon kit lens was far superior compared to other manufacturers. But for Nikon it was all about character of the lens than sharpness but their Z mount lens is losing it’s soul little by little.
It;s worth noting that Nikon also makes a cheapo 28mm f/2.8 that is about twice as deep as the 26mm but is still very compact. The image quality on that lens is a little less sharp at f/2.8 but both lenses are pretty much equal at f/3.2 or f/4. It's internal focusing which makes it much more silent, it;s still pretty small and it's very lightweight. Only major downside of this lens for me compared to the 26mm is the lack of weather sealing, but it's about half the price too. Bought mine for around 200 bucks. Also, 52mm filters are EXTREMELY common, it's like the most ubiquitous filter size I've ever seen. All of my older Nikon APS-C zooms were 52mm, all of my Nikon vintage glass is 52mm, all of my Viltrox primes were 52mm, same goes for the few Canon lenses I've used... filter sizes like 49mm or 46mm expecially are way more uncommon than 52mm. 52mm is liek the standard filter size of smaller lenses, has been for like 40 years.
Look what Nikon is capable of creating 26mm 2.8 pancake lens and Lumix decided to do 28 f8?? And it is manual focus?? What's up with that Lumix? Correction: SAME 26MM BUT F8 ?? LUMIX ??
If you want to follow the daily photo project I mentioned at the end this video is the link to that instagram- instagram.com/evanranftphoto. This lens really surprised me and I had a lot of fun making these photos. Thanks for watching!
You need to put that lens on the Nikon Zf 🔥
My thoughts immediately! 👌
I have one for my Zf. It’s the #1 lens I use, alongside my GRIIIs. Superb.
Back in the old days of MF Nikon cameras, 52mm was the standard Nikon filter size. (And also the size used by the current Z 40/2 and 28/2.8.)
In my head, 52mm is THE Nikon filter size. Everything from 1970s primes to recent DX kit lenses all take 52mm. Plus one of my LUMIX lenses as well.
I have several Voigtlander F mount lenses for my FE-2. They are all 52mm as well. So 52 is the right size for me.
This news makes me want to buy the lens even more. I have a LOT of lately unused 52mm filters.

I own this lens and this along with the 24-120s is all I took to Europe for 3 weeks. It is an amazing small lens. I use it on the z8.

Agree 100% about choosing gear that you actually want to take out with you. I have this lens and love it and never really noticed the focusing noise!

Yup love that lens. One of my most used lately. Same thing. I wasn’t expecting such quality for the price point.
I thought it would be the 26mm as soon as i read the title
Good kit 💪🏼

It’s extremely surprising!!
Agree 100%, my most used Z lens for the last year, i'd love to see Nikon make a 35mm in this size.
Like many already said, you must try Nikon Zf and pair it with this lens.
Great video like always. 😊
Some bloody good images here 😮 Especially given the daily life subjects 🎉
I love that lens. I will tell you it looks better on the Zf than the Z8. On a flip, I just got the 28-400 zoom and it looks better on the Z8. The glass that Nikon is coming up with for the Z mounts have awed me.

Received Momento the other day, absolutely fantastic man, i appreciate the personal touch in it also. Thank you for being you and doing your thing bro

Evan can you tell Nikon to make a Z3, the people need it
Nikon F range of lenses, many original F basic lenses used 52mm filters.
Great quick review
The 26mm on the Z f is a dream. Just wish we had a version of the lens styled like the Z f. Still looks good though as the lens is super small.
Doesn’t the SE version match the zf style?
I’m looking to buy this lens with a zf c or a zf and this video makes me want that even more
Looks nice on the Z8. Wish it had internal focus though.

What’s the difference between this lens and the 28mm Z lens other than the two millimetres in focal length? How come you didn’t go for that one?
The 26 is smaller, sharper, and has a metal mount (I don’t do plastic lens mounts). IMO the 28 is closer to a muffin than a pancake. But both are excellent lenses.

Just bought this for my zf canera can fit in my back pocket lol i just keep it in my coat pocket.
I love my Z8 with the 28mm 🔥🔥🔥
I have the Fuji 27mm f2.8 it makes noise. My Olympus 27mm f2.8 makes noise. But my Panasonic 14mm f2.8 is the only silent pancake lens that I know of.
Used 52mm filters can be found easily online reasonably
Nikon used to have 52mm as standard across its lens lineup size back in the old days all vintage lenses came with 52mm
love my 26 and 40 also
My boi said stop it down to 2.8. My brother in christ thats wide open 😂
52mm filters are super common to Nikon prime shooters. Sosebee's closed down?
My two dream cameras 😩🤌
the Z 40mm F2 is the ultimate companion to the 28mm
Nikon should make retro style range finder and more compact lenses. They gonna hit Fuji market really hard with those. Fuji is going big lenses and compact lenses are not in sight anymore
pancake lenses are my favourite
U could get the nikon zf and the 26mm Lens that would be like a better option
Even in Dslr era, Nikon kit lens was far superior compared to other manufacturers. But for Nikon it was all about character of the lens than sharpness but their Z mount lens is losing it’s soul little by little.
I'm kinda shocked this 26mm is noisy. I have both the 28mm & 40mm Z primes, which are quite as a mouse.

I would have said the sign image was a solid 4/5
Hey I really appreciate that! Haha idk I’m usually pretty harsh when I rate my own pictures
52 mm is the size Nikon introduced with F1 in 1059
Comparing this lens to a Leica 1.7? No way.
Paused the Terrence Howard Joe Rogan podcast for this
that podcast is a DENSE one haha a 10 minute break could be needed 🙌
You should generally stop watching TH-camrs who interview morons like Tucker Carlson 😂
lol
😂😂
"You and I".
❤
Sell it all and buy a fishing pole 🎣
You are saying this Nikon lens equipped with a camera body and is selling at $398, aren‘t you?
Look what Nikon is capable of creating 26mm 2.8 pancake lens and Lumix decided to do 28 f8?? And it is manual focus?? What's up with that Lumix?
Correction: SAME 26MM BUT F8 ?? LUMIX ??
Nikon has been using 52mm for decades
I want Nikon now bahaha. Wish Sony had a good 26mm prime like this for APSC
Who knows maybe it’s in the future!
Early!
Glad you could be here! 🙏
540 euros in Europe. WTF????? 🤬
