Nikon is a brand in their own league, they are very innovative as a company. Here are 3 fun facts about Nikon:
The Nikon F Mount has been out there since 1959, and its still the same mount used on their modern DSLR systems.
Nikon cameras are used by NASA to capture images of space and aerial images of earth. The Nikon Z9 has been chosen to go to space in 2027 just like how the Nikon D3s was chosen to go onboard the ISS in the mid-to-late 2000s.
In the 1960s, Nikon brought us the first underwater SLR camera.

Switched as a life-long Sony user to Nikon and honestly loving it. Menu system is so much better, Sony ergonomics suck, and Nikon RAW colors are unbeatable in the bracket. I miss my Sony sometimes especially for portraits (which I rarely do nowadays anyways) but there's times I regret it sure. There's really no competition with Nikons new Z-mount S lenses either, they're just too sharp for the value you're paying. You really cant go wrong nowadays with any mirrorless camera.

I don't see myself ever moving away from Nikon and the haters can go kick rocks for all I care. I have never been one of those people who makes decisions based on what is most popular. Right, lets get into certain details. Nikon was by far the largest manufacturer right up until the 1980's. Things changed when Canon changed to the EF-mount, and started releasing their EOS line of cameras. Slowly, Canon started to get a big lead over Nikon. This increased with digital, with Canon releasing full frame DSLR's, far earlier than Nikon and a lot of professionals went over to Canon. Nikon did eventually respond (with very good cameras) but Canon in 2008 released the 5Dmk2, which whilst not being the first DSLR to introduce video (that would be the Nikon D90), was the first full frame DSLR, and they implimented the codecs much better. This allowed film makers to start shooting video on a large sensor, with excellent quality glass, at a much cheaper price. Also, the 5Dmk2, had 21mp, vs the Nikon D7 having 12mp, the headline figures which the D700 just didn't have.
Also, we had the internet being the internet and people always want their £2500 camera to be better than the next persons £2500 camera. Canon and Nikon were the 2 major manufacturers so naturally, the big "my camera is better than yours" was between those 2 manufacturers.
Panasonic and Olympus really started the ball with mirrorless around 2008 (Though the first mirrorless camera was released by Epsom). With both using the micro 4/3 sensor. Sony in 2010, and Nikon not hugely later in September 2011 (Before Fujifilm released the X-mount line of cameras). The big issue with the Nikon 1 series of camera was that they were aimed at amateurs. So this didn't really please Nikon users and whilst the cameras were not terrible, they were not particularly good either.
Meanwhile, Nikon was releasing the D800, which was an amazing camera, with a 36mp sensor. Which whilst not perfect, really did move the DSLR on (It was the first DSLR to allow shooting video externally, but most ignored that). And soon after Canon released the 5Dmk3, which many Canon owners loved.
This is important because, the A7 and A7R were first released about a year after the Nikon and Canon, and frankly. The A7 series at that time couldn't compare to either the Nikon or Canon. So those who bought the Sony were mocked and the system was looked down upon by Nikon and Canon users.
But Sony persisted improved the camera with the A7II and A7RII, and there started to be a change in attitude. I was at a workshop with Frank Durhoff, who had just gone over to Sony, and he basically was saying he innitially hated the camera, but that changed, when he realised that with mirrorless, he could see the final image in the EVF, and that was a big thing for him. A lot of people started to board the Sony band wagon, between 2014 and 2017, but really it was the Sony a7III, which really changed the market in 2018.
Now, Nikon was on a roll in the DSLR world at this time, they had released the D810, the D500 and the D850, which were amazing DSLR's, but by this time, I think many realised that mirrorless was the way the industry was going, and I think Nikon and Canon did realise this (You have to take into consideration the time from planning to bring out a new system to actually releasing it).
So, rumours that Nikon were going to be releasing a mirrorless system in 2018, and there was a big marketing campaign trying to build up excitement for the Z6 and Z7. That was right up until the two cameras were announced, and Nikon users were not happy. Nikon had the D500 and D850, maybe the best DSLR's on the market, and then the Z6 and Z7 were released and whilst Nikon did some things very well, ergonomically, many did not like them. They certainly didn't like the single card slot, and when people got hold of the camera, the AF system was poor.
Soon after Canon released the EOS R, which in many ways was as bad or worse than the Z6/Z7, though with firmware releases, Canon did fix their AF in firmware, whilst the Nikon options still struggled.
Meanwhile the Sony A7III was dominating mirrorless full frame, the AF was amazing compared to the Nikon and canon offerings. Video was good for 2018, and whilst the colour science and menu still were not great, Sony owners didn't mind that, and they could lord it over Nikon users on the internet.
Sony continued to power forward, with their a7 line of cameras. Canon released the R5, which is a great camera, and Nikon floundered. The Z6II/Z7II, fixed some of the issues, but Nikon users still were not that happy and new usere were not going to Nikon. The R5, gave a reason for 5Dmk4 users to go over to the R5. The Z7II didn't give a good reason to go over from the D850, and many of those who didn't hated the Z7II, particularly the autofocus.
So with Nikon floundering. Speculation started, that Nikon was going to go out of business and Nikon was out of touch, and Nikon users were really frustrated. As a Nikon owner, I had been using a D800 for 10 years, and I had been waiting for a replacement since 2018, which didn't seem to come. In the end I bought a D850, and a GFX100s, because I was so frustrated.
So, there wasn't a lot of love in the room for Nikon. Both from NIkon users and particularly from Sony and Canon users, who bother had systems that were maturing (and I say mature with the R5).
I think much of the hate stopped in 2022, with the release of the Z9, which was Nikon's game changer, and of course, in 2023 Nikon released the Zf and in particular the Z8, which fixed the Z7II issues and gave a true replacement for the D850. Add to that Nikon has been releasing a really solid line up of lenses, and in 2024, really their lens lineup is exceptionally good. So, Nikons reputation has been saved and they are now releasing camera Nikon users want to buy.
Nikon still have a way to go, their lower end lineup of mirrorless isn't great, but they have shown where they are going. So the hate has pretty much gone back down to pre-2018 levels, and with NIkon, Canon, Sony users hating each other equally, whilst pretty much everyone loves Fujifilm (Apart from their AF).
So that is my very long take on why many hate Nikon. In shorty, Nikon, Canon, Sony rivalry, the internet being full of idiots, and Nikon making some big mistakes.

      @MichaelLaing71 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Whils the Nikon D90 was first, Nikon didn't impliment it more of an after thought than anything. The D5mk2 released soon after than that had the advantage of being implimented better and having a full frame sensor. So, Nikon got their first, but Canon had already realised the that you could have video (it takes years for a camera to go from design to release). Of course, in reality, the Dm5mk2 wasn't great at video, but really it was the start of people seriously using DSLR's for shooting video.
Nikon did release the D800, which allowed for shooting of external video to an external recorder. Which the 5Dmk3 didn't have upon release, and had to be implimented in a firmware update. Which I think was more of an open eyes for other brands, but it wasn't a big success in the D800, which was known really as a photography camera.

Talk about a video that never gets anywhere... totally achieved here. I teach photography on Canon cameras, but I don't personally shoot using Canon. I shoot Nikon, Panasonic, and Olympus digitally. I shoot Nikon, Olympus, Fuji, Pentax, Bronica, 4x5, and a couple hundred other bodies in film. Nikon is at the very top of my list in both film and digital.

I've always been a Canon shooter, 12 years now, never had a Nikon and probably never will, but I have friends that are Nikon shooters and I never thought about their cameras as being bad, behind or sucking, not even back in the DSLR days. Actually, back then Nikon DSLRs were noticeable better than Canon's in almost every regard, dynamic range, lower noise and so on, even sharper videos compared to the mushy line skipped crap Canon was producing. I had to go to Panasonic GH series for decent quality videos. So no, in the past Nikon was never behind and their cameras never sucked. The only issue people are now having is that Nikon autofocus appears to be a little bit behind Canon's and Sony's, but not by much, certainly not by enough to call their cameras bad.

Had a big corporate event whereby theres 2 photographers (i'm one of them) & 1 videographers. I use my Nikon Z6, the other photographer used a Canon & the videographer used a Sony. I rmb the photographer is amazed at how sharp my photos are while the videographer is shocked at how close I can get to the subject with my 24-200 zoom lens. So go ahead, hate on the brand & the ppl that use the brand, then we'll just outdo the other brands with photos/videos taken from a Nikon

Had to chuckle as NOT everyone hates on Nikon, seriously, I love our Nikons D3000 and D5000 series as much as the D800's and 850's. It is not about the kit, the only reason we did not go with other cameras was the way they felt in the hand. Nikon is nice and chunky, fits perfect and is also mentioned by Simon and Garfunkel in their, "Kodachrome track", all good enough for us!
We changed from Hasselblad system to Nikon after they changed the model from the 500 CFV series to the fuji tat format. Again it is not the kit, we still use our alleged Nikon entry cameras, as they are as good now as they were when released years ago. We don't fall for all the latest tat, it is not needed and cameras do not make good photographers no matter how high spec or expensive they are.
We still use our Sinar f2 and P2 with digital, for the fun of it, it is personal preference and most pro lenses are as good as we are going to get, the haters must be ignorant!
Sony? What, when we have the Nikon Zf, 😂😂😂

It’s because they never took video seriously LOL, photographers love Nikon, and Canon kept their market share, not because they did better in the mirrorless world (they in fact did worse), but because they had great video even in their DSLRs. The second reason is marketing. You (obviously I don’t actually mean you), the tubers kill more products then you realize, and while Sony and Canon took you (the tubers) to events, offered review gear and absolutely made a killing with influencers, Nikon slept. Another thing is, ppl love to say sh@t even for things they have zero clue about, and once word gets around that you’ve slept with your sister, no one believes that you don’t have a sister.. even if it’s the truth!

Most photographers just go out and shoot. We don't care if you shoot canon, or Sony or whatever. You do you. I bought the first camera that fitted in my hands well, the controls seemed intuitive and it was a good price and a reputable brand. Once I had a couple of lenses it didn't make sense to move away. Nobody I value out of my customers or peers ever asks. Nobody without knowing could guess what I was shooting on.
There is a demographic that cares about brand. Whether its ford or gm, apple or android, apple or pc. We've seen this nonsense before, and it's always driven by people like the OP. Brand validation of this kind is equal to religions in terms of irrational cult behaviour. Odd that people don't get worked up in the same way about their domestic fridges. Or that they do about power tool brands. I think there's something in that.
You ever hear about great photographers doing this? Hey Ansell! How you gonna shoot that hill without focusing face focus rapid eye dog feature wet nose detection? Oi Henri!! Decisive moment bro? More like 22 frames a second past the decisive moment. Hey Daido Moriyama! Only room for one roll of film?? Deal breaker for me. Nick Ut, how you measure the dynamic range? With a trowel!
No, great photographers don't do this. Good photographers don't do this. They know that a compelling subject with good light and shadows is a good image, and it's seperate from the camera.
Content creators, sorry. "content creators" on the other hand, know that a polarizing question generates debates, discussion and arguments. All forms of interaction that needy self promoting "creators" need to instigate in order to stay relevant among a sea of identical personalities all bleating the same thing.
For the record, I'm not casting judgements on anyone's ability to take a good photo. It's their personality I find wanting.

Here's a little fact many don't seems to consider. Canon cameras have always been a little cheaper than Nikon. When beginners are looking to get into photography they have a tendency to go with the brand that lets them buy more for their money. Once they're invested in a brand and have a few lenses they don't really want to have to sell off everything at a huge loss to switch, especially if money is a problem. This is why Canon is so big. Also Canon has done a few things in the past to manipulate their customers which benefits Canon but not so much their customers all the while increasing lens sales. So then the "Defend My Chosen Brand" syndrome takes over and you have 50% of people hating Nikon, who have traditionally been Canon's major competition. I know about this first hand because this is how I started out. Also, for the record, I prefer a bigger and heavier camera that balances better with large lenses to the current mirrorless offerings that let battery power suffer for the sake of lightness. My D850 looks better than any of the new ugly, angular shaped mirrorless models. I don't think looks will ever make someone go mirrorless.

Silly thing. Mostly Sony fanboys are hitting on Nikon. Sony bought all Konica Minolta assets into 2006, and Sony was *never* being a gear company, like Canikon. No decades old heritage like them, or Zeiss, or Leica. It's simply not like that. You can bash all you want, but a Sony Camera (i do own many as well) doesn't feel from ergonomics, haptics, etc. like something from Canon, and/or especially Nikon.
Whileas Nikon brings countless FW updates to the Z9, and here & there being updating other bodies, Sony just sells you framelines for 150$. FW update is usually updating to the next model. I do use gear from *all* camera brands, so it's really silly & stupid, like kindergarten chitchat, to make videos bashing brand xyz, simple as that.
One thing is for sure - i've never liked my A7, it was a beta product, released into fall 2013. Partially plastic mount, hard eyecup (both ever replaced then) internal Sensor reflections (which really sucked, fixed into A7 II), mediocre battery life and especially a sucking Delta 11+7 bits RAW file format, which the guys from RAW digger showed up many years ago, degrade IQ. You want proof? Go & dig the DPR forums.

I've always thought Nikon got a bad rep since they don't make cinema cameras, even Panasonic has one. I may be wrong here, but Nikon doesn't seem to have the market spread for all the different types one would desire either. I'm a Canon guy, I could go and buy a DSLR, mirrorless, or a hybrid body, and then spread into film with the C100 or likewise and still use all the same lenses. Everything is right there at my fingertips, all it takes is one click and then a new body is added to my army of Canon lenses and accessories. Sony is the same way, but Nikon doesn't have a cinema-equivalent camera that their fans can flock to, possibly leaving a feeling of emptiness and regret for those die-hard fans?

I'm not sure if it was a comedic "in the know" choice to show the Nikon D850 when talking about the comparisons between Nikon living in the past vs. Sony's forward looking future, but at the time of it's release the D850 was smoking it's competition. The only thing it didn't do well compared to Sony/Canon, and this has always been a weak point of Nikon's, is video auto focus. If the D850 had been released just a year earlier, it's possible Nikon could have ridden that high wave a bit longer before Sony's next release ultimately put the breaks on DSLRs.
If Nikon had managed to put their D780 tech into the D850 then I'm not entirely convinced they would have exited the DSLR market and moved to mirrorless. The D780 is probably the best of both worlds, able to be used as a traditional DSLR and as a fully featured mirrorless camera when in liveview.

I have been shooting with 3 cameras, Nikon D500, Fujifilm X-T20 and Olympus E-M1II. All of them are announced and sold at roughly the same time (2016-2017). D500 and E-M1II were indeed 'flagship' models while X-T20 was a slightly downgrade version of 'flagship' X-T2. So basically they all are represented the best technology (sensor, AF, processor) from each brands (at that time though).
Nikon D500 win in almost every aspects (except for face/subject recognition function) even it is oldest and based on supposedly outdated technology. IQ, low light performance, AF, ergonomics and so on. While AF tracking is usable on E-M1II, it's just a joke on X-T20 and it's a beast on D500. Loved them all equally, each of them have their pros and cons though.
I don't know much about Sony and Canon. I have used them for some occasions but I never personally own them, just prefer the ergonomics of Nikon/Olympus/Fujifilm cameras over those 2 brands.

Nikon being disliked because they were behind on mirrorless doesn't make much sense. If that were the case then Canon wouldn't have 50% market share still.
Canon and Nikon literally started on the same footing in regards to mirrorless. They were both years behind Sony, they both dropped DSLR development around the same time, and I believe Nikon was slightly ahead of Canon when it came to fully committing to developing Mirrorless cameras.
Thanks to their already shrinking market share though, they went through restructuring which reduced their resource pool a lot. Nikon doesn't advertise their cameras, like ever from what I can see, while both Canon and Sony advertisements are shoved in my face at least twice a year. Nikon just doesn't have the capital to catch up. Their own fault for underestimating Canon and Sony in different decades while failing to improve while SLRs and then DSLRs were King.

I don´t know if is true that "everyone" hates the brand, there is a bunch of screaming youtubers that make noise and some of them are paid for say what they say, and Sony go for this marketing strategy long time ago. Besides this, for "new" generations of creators that play on Sony products, listen music on Sony products and so on they are more familiar with the brand, but let´s say 10 years ago no one knew a sony camera was, it just didn´t exist on the market. Sony it´s a consumer products company, not a imaging company like Nikon, Canon, Fuji, Olympus, this guys are in the market for decades. Sony doesn´t know how to make glass, they hire 3rd party. Sony is huge, and yes, in 10 years changed the market, and changed it for good. I have a Nikon Z camera and i´m very happy with it, and used Nikon for years, so, i love the brand in fact.

Nikon has caught up and is in good position to pull ahead until some revolutionary design comes. Fact when Canon started making cameras Nikon (more correctly Nippon Kogaku which in essence is now Nikon) made some of their lens glass. Now Sony makes Nikon's 45mp sensors albeit with some of nikons own tech layered into them. Nikon is not beholden to the Camera market they are big in Hunting Scopes for rifles, Microscopes, Binoculars and Equipment for chip making. They even make Glass lens components for other camera makers lenses (cough Sony cough). At Nikons inception in 1917 they made optical glass for telescopes, microscopes and Binoculars. Long before they started making camera lenses or even cameras. Much like Canon and Sony have their fingers in many pies Nikon does too but just not where people would expect them to be. Sony is like the new kid on the block when it comes to making cameras. When Panasonic and others fizzled out Sony at least stuck with it until they finally started producing pro level equipment. Nikon has had all kinds of problems adjusting to the digital camera market. From the times in the late 90's to about the time when they finally got it right with the D3. And again with the mirrorless stuff. Now they get it right with the Pro level Z9 but the prosumer market is lacking. See a repeating pattern here?
EDIT: Thought I'd put this out there. NASA in the 35mm segment has just about exclusively used Nikon Cameras and lenses since APOLLO 15 through to today. The ISS has used all kinds of different Nikon Cameras and lenses. I wonder why that is.
When I started out in photography back in the late 70's I bought a Minolta camera. It was OK until it stopped working after a year and half. I had it repaired then promptly traded it in for a Nikon FM in 1980. Since then I've only used Nikon cameras. Well OK I did own a Sony point and shoot but only because it had a Zeiss lens on it.

That's what I did. I was looking for a 300mm prime lens, which are never cheap, but I found a nikon 300mm f/4 online for around 200$ so I jumped on it. Got an old nikon D7000 to go along with it.
And BAM! I've fallen in love with photography. In out every chance I get to shoot. I love my camera and lens, and I got the two for around 500$.

They hate on Nikon because their primes offer Sony Gmaster optical performance for 1/4th the price. They hate Nikon because their cameras offer 2x the features at a far lower price (A1 vs Z8, R3 vs Z9) or vastly superior features at the same price (Z6 III vs A7IV or R6 II). They hate Nikon because Nikon has the best telephoto line up in the industry. Basically they hate Nikon comes out with products that are far more feature packed and cheaper.

For me it is similar to preferring a Samsung TV over an LG TV. There is just something about the color I prefer. Hate Nikon and love Canon. Didn't help I went from Canon to Nikon and had the Nikon crap out in less than a year. I'll keep my Canon from here on out.

I love my Nikon gear. I have no regrets. the new Z lens mount is so nice. I still have Fuji gear and have shot Canon. Do what you enjoy and ignore the talking heads.

    Great video
Also Panasonic could start getting a lot bigger chunk of the market share now that their AF has caught up with Sony and Canon, especially Lumix S5II and S5 II X are gonna be big
And Fujifilm is also really trying hard, it's a very competitive world out there in the camera business

I've invested in Nikons z7 series camera as my jump from a CoolPix 500 when I discovered I really liked photography and wanted to get into it more seriously.
Whilst I thought the Nikon jokes were funny and sometimes pretty accurate (looking at you landscape mode), hearing the jokes after I had made my initial investment made me worry that I made a terrible choice.
I see now it's just a reputation that they've adorned from lagging behind in the industry amongst other things and whilst I'm no pro, I do feel that they've made some excellent progress with their Z series cameras.. Even if they do repeat some mistakes of the past.
It'll take them a long time to change public opinion.

My old D800 in many ways has better IQ than current cameras of each brand. Nikon does what Nikon does. They aren't about chasing the trendy things, but that doesn't mean they don't innovate or have great ideas concerning usability. On the surface their way seems stupid many times, until you use it and have that “aha“ moment and say, “so that's why they did it that way! Very useful.“ Nonetheless, not chasing the trendy things does mean, as said in the video, Nikon gets left behind and is forced to play catch-up when other brands hit on something. Funny thing is, they usually do NOT catch up. They usually surpass and raise the bar. Canon went after sports and became famous because of it. Nikon didn't care. Sony did a heck of a job getting into the market at the perfect time, putting a ton of money into development and innovation. I have no desire to use a Sony camera. They are too tech and utilitarian with no soul (now you know I shoot a ZF, right?). But I completely get why people use them. I understand people using Sony more so than Canon. I think Canon is popular, but I've never thought their RAW files were great, nor do I think they are the right “feel“ for creative photography. Fashion and sports? Sure. I just couldn't feel like an artist with a Canon.

Great video! Canon was late to the mirrorless party as well. The z6 and z7 are all around better mirrorless cameras than the EOS R and RP were. Canon “caught up” with mirrorless halfway through 2020. Also, the d850 is a great camera and photography wise, is better than any Sony or Canon that came before it. While I respect Sony’s innovation with mirrorless they truly weren’t amazing cameras till the a7r3 and a73.

here in germany looking at people photographing people it is more like no one is using expensive cameras anymore. It is more like there is fuji then there is nothing then a lot of really old cheap dslrs ... then more modern apsc mirrorless a lot of nikon ... nikon was here always strong in the studio/people marked and older sony like a lot of A 3.
The youtuber's cameras like canon R5 or latest sony are not really common. they are more used by elderly people or people shooting birds or this stuff maybe. You will see more old shitty nikon and canon dlrs then the latest canon or Sony with good glas.

Nothing new on Nikon hate. Lol Its been there since the beginning. During film days, people swear on Film brands and now camera systems. It all boils down to personal preference. All systems make great photos and vids.
Been using Nikon D90 for more than a decade up to this point and it can still pull in great results despite of all the advances in tech. Pixel peeping is overrated has most view photos online and it doesnt make much of a difference to the viewer. 😅

Also, yeah. My sister in law let me borrow her red Nikon so I could record the XV choreographies I was working at the time. I used it for one of them then went and bought the sl2 lol. Not my cup of tea.
