The issue for Jones challenging Tysan was that he's an amazing fast boxer. But when you are facing guys like Tyson is that if you can't put them down, at one point, chances is that they will connect and the moment someone like Tyson connect, it turns the table for someone that doesn't have an iron chin

RJJ was a once in a generation athletic anomaly but to become a king of killers it's hard to ignore that drug testing wasn't very refined then (and it isn't perfect today). The tests weren't good enough to catch them, and the stakes were far too high to not use every advantage when $Millions and Worldwide Fame were on the line. There was too much to lose and too little to gain staying natural at the top. I'm not knocking him though because to get those results he still needed one of a kind talent, correct muscle insertion+response genetics, and serious work ethic.

Yeah in MMA I equate BJ Penn to a similar career. Was a legend and went all the way from lightweight (155) to heavyweight (205+). Dude went up to 170 and took the belt from a prime Matt Hughes who was an absolute monster and then went back down after to take the 155 crown. But then he just stayed around for too long and went on a loss streak.
Jones' style grew around his speed, his sublime reaction time & his blindingly fast reflexes. As with all athletes, these attributes & skills decline with age. And, as we all know, a split second is all it takes to make a difference.....the difference between a punch landing & a punch missing. Add that to a decline in punch resistance & we see the results; it was always on the cards for Roy as he was unable to consider retirement.
Yeah, especially for Roy. His weight jumps were unnatural. Unlike most boxers, who fight many pounds below their natural weight, Roy fought not much below his natural walk around weight. So to go up to where he did, come back down, at his age, was ill-advised.

Biggest mistake when it comes to legacy was fighting Tarver post dropping the weight. Had he fought him and then moved up, history would wax lyrical on Roy.
Plus if you watch the first Tarver fight Roy was hit in the back of the head a lot and this did something to him, thus the result of the second fight and after.
Roy Jones is waxed on historically as one of the best pd for pd fighters ever right there with sugar ray robinson. He killed everyone in his division and went up just to get challenged more. Absolute nightmare in the ring. His legacy is etched in stone as one of the greatest just ask toney and anyone else who had the balls to get in ring with him.

I remember the Jones Hopkins fight very clearly. I remember going into thinking it was gonna be a real test for Jones. I left the fight thinking Jones just made a great fighter look like he was in way over his head. It was crazy how well Jones fought in that fight.
Generally a good small guy doesn't beat a good big guy, however once in a while you get the exceptions like Jack Dempsey, Mike Tyson, Roy Jones that can WILL upset the odds as gifted !

I am also a huge fan Roy Jones Jr, and he's one of my most favorite boxers of all time! Having said that, I am pretty sure that Roy lost his speed and coherence after experimenting with some harmful substances that helped him gain weight and strength needed for the heavy weight division. Gaining and losing weight is always bad enough, but I think that steroids and perhaps some additional substances he was taking on and off at the time were the real reason his career went downwards.

He wouldn't have lost if he had retired when he should have. I think moving up to heavyweight and then moving back down to light heavyweight was a mistake. The only fighter who ever did that and was successful was Bob Fitzsimmons and that's because he was the same weight when he won the heavyweight championship and the light heavyweight (actually I believe he was a pound heavier when he won the light heavyweight title but I could be mistaken 🤔), but anyway that and combined with the fact that he just simply hung around too long. In his prime tho, he was almost untouchable!! Truly, a phenom!!

I was blown away as a 14 yr old watching a 19 yr old Jones Jr light up the Olympics. Ive been a fan of his ever since. Now when I review his fights the more I see Sugar Ray Robinson in him & now hes even starting to look like the older retired version of Sugar Ray Robinson. Roy was great. I always wondered if gaining the weight to move up to Heavyweight then having to work his ass off and have a routine to lose weight inorder to fight Tarver made him more sluggish that added on to his age just unraveled him. alot of fighters when they move up and then back down dont fare as good usually. most of the time when a fighter moves up they stay there. Roy Jones is waxed on historically as one of the best pd for pd fighters ever right there with sugar ray robinson. He killed everyone in his division and went up just to get challenged more. Absolute nightmare in the ring. His legacy is etched in stone as one of the greatest just ask toney and anyone else who had the balls to get in ring with him.

i enjoy watching roy preform so much in his prime when i was a kid growing up, cause of him, i knew how to defend myself in middle school and high but that day when he lost, i was forever heart broken, cause i knew he wasn't the same after that

I remember the Jones Hopkins fight very clearly. I remember going into thinking it was gonna be a real test for Jones. I left the fight thinking Jones just made a great fighter look like he was in way over his head. It was crazy how well Jones fought in that fight.

That and playing basket ball b4 a fight. I know he was trying to challenge himself, but that is to much stress on your body. Yep should've hung 'em up after the heavyweight title. Still cannot take anything from him. That guy was a monster at middle, supermiddle and light heavy. Think of the middle or supermiddle weight division today. Who could beat him? How about this, ask Mayweather who would win a fight between Roy and him at a catch weight. Hopkins or even Lights out would whup all these middle super and light heavys today, in their primes. Roy made those guys look like amatures. Besides maybe sugar ray Robinson he was the best middle supermiddle weight, and could make an arguement about being the best offensive fighter of all time! He just hit to hard and fast at those weights.

I am also a huge fan Roy Jones Jr, and he's one of my most favorite boxers of all time! Having said that, I am pretty sure that Roy lost his speed and coherence after experimenting with some harmful substances that helped him gain weight and strength needed for the heavy weight division. Gaining and losing weight is always bad enough, but I think that steroids and perhaps some additional substances he was taking on and off at the time were the real reason his career went downwards.

Roy's decline in boxing was the most heartbreaking thing to ever happen...
He wouldn't have lost if he had retired when he should have. I think moving up to heavyweight and then moving back down to light heavyweight was a mistake. The only fighter who ever did that and was successful was Bob Fitzsimmons and that's because he was the same weight when he won the heavyweight championship and the light heavyweight (actually I believe he was a pound heavier when he won the light heavyweight title but I could be mistaken 🤔), but anyway that and combined with the fact that he just simply hung around too long. In his prime tho, he was almost untouchable!! Truly, a phenom!!

I was blown away as a 14 yr old watching a 19 yr old Jones Jr light up the Olympics. Ive been a fan of his ever since.
Now when I review his fights the more I see Sugar Ray Robinson in him & now hes even starting to look like the older retired version of Sugar Ray Robinson.
Roy was great. I dont think anyone was further ahead of their era since Robinson.

I always wondered if gaining the weight to move up to Heavyweight then having to work his ass off and have a routine to lose weight inorder to fight Tarver made him more sluggish that added on to his age just unraveled him. alot of fighters when they move up and then back down dont fare as good usually. most of the time when a fighter moves up they stay there. I don't see Tarver winning against Roy Jones in his prime. Jones was by far best fighter i have seen in my life.
