  • Before The GBA SP There Was THIS! What Is It And Can I Fix It? | PC Engine LT
Today we're going to take a look at the PC Engine LT. A very obscure semi-portable console with a clamshell design much like the beloved Nintendo GBA SP. Not only is this a fully operational PC Engine Console (TurboGrafx-16) it also has a few really neat tricks up its sleeve. Plus, the one that I bought for this video is broken, I'm hoping I'll able to fix it. Watch to find out!

Kudos to NEC and Hudson for being able to squeeze a fairly powerful game system down to such a small size. Also, the A/V port negates the need to do this, but couldn't you technically connect a digital converter to make this compatible with modern television signals? You used to be able to get those for free back in the late 2000s through government coupons.

i mean you could treat the EXT ANT as a coax input, so you could plug your original NES right into this, via AV or COAX.
you could also probably use this to play with SDR, slap a big antenna on your roof, pull in some weather images, onto your computer, then decode them and rebroadcast it at J-NTSC to your little PC Engine LT

The retention tabs ARE actually charging connectors for when its plugged on the IFU, and for the 2 players, it's the same as the original PC-Engine, which got only 1 controller port. You need to plug a multitap, which can be used to plug the player 2 controller while player 1 still plays on the integrated controller.

It's nice to see the Hucard slot getting removed during this process & congrats on the repair!
I would like to mention that sadly Isopropyl alone isn't enough to prevent the boric acid & electrolyte contamination from eating away at any impregnated vias. I typically remove the DC-to-DC converter, inductor in that area as these are areas that it likes to seep under. Vias being eaten under the DC-to-DC converter are becoming a regular find; such as two units recently worked on with major damage to that component & 30V backlight rail. I also tend to reflow and plug all the vias in the backlight 30V area (under the regulator) after neutralisation & cleaning.
The last few I have had to do quite a bit of trace repair in addition to vias plugging.
Your unit was in surprisingly good condition compared to the last several I have been sent to work on, so I just wanted to make you aware.

As a TurboExpress owner with TV Tuner I never understood the PC Engine LT other than larger screen but I kind of understand for the market it was released in. I think you got a great deal on an obscure piece of gaming history and it’s definitely in the right hands to get back up and running. I use to connect my Super Nintendo to my TurboExpress thru it’s AV input just for fun. There’s HD digital tuner boxes that were available when the US was switching over to digital TV future so you can hook one of those up

I've repaired a "lot" (ie about 7-8) PC Engine LT, you are doing pretty well ! Most people are not removing HuCard connector but there is some capacitor leak under in most cases. For LT that show no sign to life (no green light when power on) the DC-DC converter chip needs to be changed. It just die when capacitors are too far from their expected value, I tried installing a new converter before changing the capacitors for testing, and it just instantly killed the new DC-DC converter. Changing the capacitors and changing again the DC-DC converter just made the console work again ;)

Wireless television is one of the best examples.
I also loved the old RF switches.
Say what you will about the image quality. But the fact is, I could hook up the VCR, NES, and Genesis all up to the television and take up only one input. Turn a device on, the TV instantly switches from TV broadcast to the console or VCR. Turn the device off, instantly back to TV. No selecting which input to use. It was just automatic.

That thing is awesome! I knew about the GT/TurboExpress, but never saw that unit before. The fact that it has an input is incredible!
You should consider the possibilities of adding a digital TV tuner to the unit - that might be complicated, but cound be a cool video.
Also, a note about the controller port - the PC Engine/TurboGrafx only had one controller port and required a tap to use two. Does this unit support that tap?
