How To Manual Regen A Freightliner

- I could not find any videos to do this on my 2015 Freightliner Cascadia. I decided to put this up so that,1. I can remember how to do it later and 2. Maybe others are needing this for this particular tractor as well.
Common complaint: my tractor’s EF dash indicator is lit up but I can’t get the engine to regenerate the trapped exhaust.
Not good. In time that dash light will go from solid amber to blinking amber and then to solid red… and you can’t move.
Often, the system won’t initiate because of a possibility of two reasons…
1) the exhaust filter needs to be disassembled by a mechanic and cleaned (these filters are reusable), and/or
2) a leaky gasket (filter housing-exhaust pipe) is allowing cool air in circumventing the required build up of pressure and heat which initiates the regen process.
Thanks for saving my time i was worried drivers around me said i broke down and will take 1 day to be fixed and about 10 hours to service call.

Im a new truck driver I just started a couple months ago. They put me in a different truck that has that button. I have a RGEN button but I drive an automatic. What is the purpose of it exactly in an automatic. I'm assuming it has something to do with parking break compression?

Question for you. What happens if your parked at a truck stop and the truck starts to regen automatically while on my reset? It happened to me, I just interrupted it and shut it down because I had trucks parked beside me. Could you give me advice?
To be honest, the truck "should" regen automatically on its own. Most of the time it happens while driving and you never notice it. It was possible that it was ready to do a regen while at the truck stop next to other trucks... but I'm willing to bet that it would have been a natural cycle that was not going to go for several minutes.
It was fine to stop it from doing what it "wanted" but hopefully it did it on its own later. If not, don't worry as you can still do a manual regen cycle if you wish or when/if the regen light comes on during your travels.
Thanks for looking out for the possibility of other surrounding vehicles being in any danger. Better to be safe than sorry.

When my Cascadia went out on me because of this...the check engine light came on as well as the Regen light. but after doing this procedure, they both went out.
So, if the check engine light came on because of the need for a Regen...then it should work.
But this manual procedure requires some long waiting...so be prepared to stay with your vehicle while it goes through this process.

ok, I keep doing this, but in low gear while driving, the light shows up, and gets smelly in the truck. then after a while, it goes away...
(I had my PDF filter replaced, costs about 5.000) but still...
before I had the PDF replaced, the smell was so much worse while driving and idling...now it happens rarelu, like, every day or so.

correct... i have noticed i can't do a forced manual regen unless the light is on.

Put your foot on your brake. Put in d or r. With foot still on brake put back in N. Keep foot on brake and finish the video. It may take a couple trys to get the timing right

Quick question when should you do a regen ?
The Regen process "should be" automatic on most.
Meaning...the vehicle will "ask" for a regen by illuminating the indicator. OR the vehicle "should" automatically regen during traveling.
Sometimes though the vehicle can't regen properly during travel and will "ask" for a regen by illuminating the indicator.
Main thing is that if the indicator is not illuminated...you can't put the vehicle into regen mode.

I am not sure if it will work when only my maintenance, check engine, and stop light indicators come on. However I did try this while only the maintenance, and check engine light indicators were on, but nothing - no regeneration… I bought a tool it worked but now it doesn’t… so I’ll get a jpro… and I’ll hope that this works when only my three light indicators mentioned above appear… if not then I gotta pull a doser sensor and clean it or maybe get two nox sensors replaced?!! Sheesh!
Your system probably includes a reusable exhaust filter that needs to be cleaned. Also, the exhaust needs to reach a certain temp before the regen process will work. Many tractors will have the problem of a flashing dash indicator but can’t initiate the system to begin the process because the filter exhaust housing to the exhaust pipe GASKET is not air tight any longer allowing cool air to cool the system heat circumventing that required temp sweet spot. Could be simply a faulty gasket or your exhaust filter needs cleaning, or both.
Mine does that. Always have to wait till im bck to the shop to use the laptop and force a regen. I ended up needing a new 1box. To much time sitting and idling at the mills. Sucks when its peace work lol

lol I guess from generally looking at this video and "out my windshield" you would think that...
It was very early morning just after doing a live unload. This is the business district area so no one was parked on this side at this time. There was posted signage for no parking for street sweep...but i figure it was not going to take too long....
it did take much longer than anticipated but it was all good. I turned off the flashers only because it was not really needed as i was parked just like any other vehicle....although no one else was parked on that side due to street sweep day restriction.
but yes i agree that looking out my windshield, it appears that i just stopped in the middle of traffic....lol
