I really appreciate the love you've given the original two Metal Gear games. Been a fan of the series since 98' yet I believe these original two are essentials! I consider the Metal Gear 1 as the Super Mario Bros. of Stealth and Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake as the Super Mario Bros. 3 of the series. Fun unknown fact: If you google Iroquois Pliskin and look as his pictures side by side the original box art of Metal Gear 1 with Kyle Reese Solid Snake, you'll begin to realize that Iroquois Pliskin is the first and only ever 3D model of Solid Snake from Metal Gear 1. I don't want a Remake but yeah, i replay MG1 in particular very often. I actually kinda prefer it to MG2 because once you're familiar with the traps it throws at you and some of the more obscure puzzle solutions, it really has such tight level design and enemy placement. MG2 is cool for the "Oh, I can't believe they had these mechanics already back then!" factor and the boss fights are better but I think upon replaying these games, MG2 as a whole feels a bit more tedious and the level design isn't as tight. Also, within the first 10 minutes you get to the part where you have to follow the man in the green beret and that's not cool.
It is time to remakes these, the impact when you played these with the other metal gear games will be insane, mgs4 ending would also be crazy, I want to see the friendship grey fox and snake had just like Otacon, which would make his death even more sad, the best way I can describe this is like they destroyed the 2 books and the first one was badly damaged and the second one was good but not enough, by the way I mean story not gameplay, so yeah I’m hope after mgs3 remake and peace walker remake (would be funny if they did portable ops remake) we can finally explore the chapters of solid snake that the west never got to play.

The first two Metal Gear games? You mean Metal Gear MSX2 and Metal Gear NES? ... What are you doing with that baseball bat? D-don't come any closer! I think one problem is Solid was many peoples first MG game and they wanna put forth their experience as the best cause it means the most to them. MG1 never got a US release (just a release in some European regions that cut some stuff cause memory reasons) until the PS2, and MG2 was completely JP exclusive until Subsistence as well. For many, they WERE missing. Add onto that it was 8 years between 2 and Solid1 and by the time 2's sequel had come out 2 was already an old game, and by the time they got US versions their design had aged enough to be considered Old Game Jank. Solid summarizes their stories and they're retconned and treated with broad enough strokes I say you CAN skip them, though I think you shouldn't. I did at first, just cause they were tucked away in the Legacy Collection (which is basically where I started if you don't count PW's demo on PSP) I couldn't find them, but after going back I had a blast. They're definitely aged though, stretching even my tolerance for old game jank my first playthrough, and the copy protection stuff like the tap code and hiding frequencies in the manual (which on Legacy Collection, you have to completely exit the game to check) is just bullshit, but they're still fun and 2's story is phenomenal, even if I feel the game's ambitions straining against its abilities. When I got my cousin into the series a couple years ago I insisted we start with 1 and 2 cause they're good, their stories definitely matter, and if we did it while I was there I could help cut down the backtracking (god FUCK 2's backtracking. Last area of the game and you gotta go all the way back just to change a key's temperature if you didn't already know ahead to do it), and though he admits he probably wouldn't have stuck through them on his own he enjoyed them! Cause they're good games, just cryptic and aged kinda badly! Hell, most of the series is old by now, Solid 1 and 2 still feel like 2D games with 3D graphics lots of the time, and they have their own old game jank now, but it people can get over it enough for Solid (which you should it's a must play and one of the best games ever) they should be able to for MG1 and 2. I think MG2's Big Boss is one of the best boss fights in the series, scrounging around from an armed stronger enemy to grab a weapon and then burning him to death is great, and the dialogue both before and after are so indicative of how already traumatized Snake is but still hopeful, a hope he's basically lost by the time of Solid. A few things of note more in response to specific things said in the video: The whole VR Training thing with Raiden implies the events of MG1, 2, GB, and Solid happened but their depiction is VR Training the Patriots made for Raiden. Since the Patriots were trying to brainwash him, MGS2 kinda recontexualizes them happening in broad strokes as canon. They happened, but not necessarily as depicted, so stuff like Big Boss leaving out the father plot twist (Remember, Campbell says it was never included in the official report when it's revealed in MGS1), or Gray Fox supposedly helping Snake and showing him the ropes isn't completely a contradiction. Schneider's frequency is in the manual I'm pretty sure Gustava was called Natasha Marcova in the original release. Later releases would change her name, presumably either to avoid confusion with Natasha Romanenko from MGS, and cause her name and backstory was a massive reference to something. Oilix was never really gonna fix the energy crisis, just buy time, it didn't really turn oil into a renewable resource after all. Now, if only people would stop overlooking the NES games as well (pfffff as if)
I think Ghost Babel being nothing but an in-universe VR simulation makes sense, though I haven't played it myself so idk. I don't recall them ever saying Raiden went through the MSX games for his VR training, but I guess it's likely. I've actually looked up a scan of the Japanese manual for MG1, can confirm Schneider's frequency isn't there. I realize that it's never technically stated Oilix would flat out solve the oil crisis, but considering how the game acts like it's a world changing discovery, I think it's a little weird how we don't get any clarification on how exactly it failed to live up to expectations. As I speculated in that section, there are multiple possible explanations for it, but nothing was ever stated.
@SpringdayAutumnmoon Ghost Babels's additional modes are a bunch of VR Challenges where an unseen character is revealed to be playing through the game as a training simulation, and it's even where we got the first namedrops of Jack and Raiden! Since one of the weapon descriptions in 4 also reference GB having happened, I've always kind of interpreted it that GB sorta happened but was spiced up for Raiden's training, so broad strokes semi-canon, and that the same would be true for the other games up to MGS2 (though more solidly canon, being main games that get referenced more often rather than a spinoff). You're right about them not saying he did the MSX games as training, I just looked it up and the only thing in the game's script is him mentioned VR training of Shadow Moses, VR/Special Missions, and the Tanker incident. Misremembered that, guess I gotta replay MGS2 sometime soon. Still, the Colonel playing the openings of MG1 and MG2 while glitching out and also playing GB's and one of the VR Mission openings in the same section (two training missions that Raiden did go through) makes them seem equivalent. Plus, Raiden is supposed to be the player (kinda), and both of us played the MSX games. He's gotta have played them himself! Once again, Schneider let's us down one last time...
I got these games in the master collection and thought, might as well start with these, they're really short and it's an easy 100% achievement. I followed a video walkthrough for the first game and speedran through most of it. It was alright, mostly it was cool to see the barest bones of what metal gear was going to turn into. But man, I started the second game and got pulled into it. Going prone and hiding was the best addition to the game. I still used a text walkthrough, but I felt like I was playing the game because I was enjoying playing it, rather than just to get the achievements. I never play 2D games, but between metal gear 2 and undertale, I'm coming around to it.
most of the gameplay shown in this video was recorded on RPCS3, so yeah. i think PCSX2 on the original version of subsistence will also work, but i havent tested it so idk if there are any weird quirks.
I still have the NES original Metal Gear with the fold out map (still in good condition). Really enjoyed it at the time, and am considering getting this new release. Enjoyed the video!
Honestly. Being a 10yr playing metal gear solid when it released. I was able to know it was a sequel since we had the NES cartridge of the first growing up. Never got far in it at all though and knew nothing….. but playing solid yea they kinda don’t make it a secret it’s a sequel. Part of what made it work for me at the time was taking the snippets they reveal and it gives snake a legendary hero status that you heard tales of. So going through solid with the idea snakes taken off adversaries of the such before, and destroyed these nuke launching robots single handed kinda just made you wanna live one those tales of his escapades instead of it being a tale. Hard to describe but think they made solid in just the right way for newcomers and people familiar. As a long time fan I don’t really recommend the original two titles myself to play. As a child they were sooooo hard, and as got older and tried going back to them yea there playable and such, but it’s still kind of a hassle, I usually say watch a let’s play or something myself. Not important to play, but I believe they’re important to know like any of the other games at least.
Solid (heh) video, I tried playing the GOG version of MG1 a while back, but gave up when I couldn't figure out how to use items, might give it another try now. Do you know if there's a way to play MG2 on PC legally?
Legally? Yeah just dump a legal copy of MGS3 Subsistence or the HD Collection on PS3 and then play it through PCSX2 or RPCS3. That or just wait for the Master Collection releasing in two days.
Master Collection. Yes, it’s being review bombed, but mostly because of a hate train spurred in by a lack if high resolution or keyboard support. If you are looking to legally get your hands on solid versions of these games (pun intended) the Master Collection has you covered.
MGS5 was better than Rising(still love it, but 5 was a masterpiece even when unfinished). And i agree, MG1&2 are must plays. Even the bootleg NES versions(which were the 1st games I've played as a kid).
Lol. In what ways? You just admit the game was unfinished? How on earth can it be better than a game that actually was finished? A game that for the most part didn't have any cut story threads. Because aside from maybe the ending hinting at a sequel we didn't get yet MGR Revengance actually has no cut story threads that just ends without any resolution. Where as MGS5 TPP had cut mission 51 where Eli/Liquid steals Sahelanthropus and Venom Snake was supposed to get it back and fight Eli/Liquid in the Sahelantheopus, but again it was cut so in the final game Eli/Liquid just steals the thing and Venom pretty much says "Fuck it! Never cared about this giant mech that could benefit me greatly anyway. Those kids can have it and possibly commit wide spread terror thanks to me not stopping them".
MGSV is a masterful game when it comes to stealth experience and mechanics. Story was lacking but it is what it is, the surrounding lore is enough to satiate my appetite while the gameplay keeps me actually playing.
@Xxandrew01 I understand why you would prefer MGR, it was extremely fun, boss fights were epic. Even the music was off the wall, but MGR was a lil too cool for Metal Gear. It was far too anime, felt like Devil May Cry with all the rock theme cool talk n it threw me off. The story felt too out of ideas after MGS4, just stretching it. I remember when we were all wondering if Rising was still in development hoping it wasn't canceled. As long as it took, I was always extremely amped for it and bought it day 1 with the lighting lamp, still have it. Beat it one time and always wanted to put more plays in like the other games, but it didn't give that true Metal Gear feeling. Great music, but too rockstar. The stealth was heavily downgraded, and I always put MGS alongside with Tenchu since they were the only 2 stealth games in their day. I did enjoy Rising, but MGSV brought the real gameplay back. Lots of things I complain about in MGSV as well(agree with what you've mentioned), but I played hundreds of hours on the story, MGO was so fire. Best 3rd person soldier mechanics of all games. I really wish this game could've been finished, we all see what Kojima had to do to decently release it. Lots of the story was taken out like you said, but we don't see all this til we get to the end of chapter 1. And yea, he never developed chapter 3, that there is sad how he gave the secret message. I typed allot, didn't see this reply, but yea, MGSV(to me), was more of a true Metal Gear experience from story to music to characters to gameplay etc.
probably because it's the most popular one. honestly im not exactly enthralled at the prospect of konami remaking any metal gear games. i dont even want remakes for the msx games, just ports with a few touch ups and enhancements would be perfect for me.
I think a key reason people shit on these titles is because the US copy of MG1 on the NES was a bit rough as a port, especially with the butchering of the ending. And we didn't get MG2 until MGS3, instead getting Snake's Revenge which is not a great title. So people do not think highly of them.
Im looking for a shortened term to refer to the MSX Metal Gear games so people dont get confused with Solid 1&2. However I feel "MSX Metal Gear" is a bit much of a mouthful, nor do I want too much of a slang like "MSX Gear"
0:46 i disagree, the game is peak Metal Gear Gameplay and the story is pretty decent althought not as good as the previous ones and probably the most replayable
To be extra clear, I don't hate MGS5, but to me it just feels worthless as a Metal Gear game, especially as the new conclusion of the series. It's a fantastic stealth-action game, a mediocre open world game, and a God awful Metal Gear game all in one.
I kind of relate; while I previously had tried Metal Gear Solid 2 (bad place to start the series lol), followed by beating Metal Gear Solid... I feel like I didn't personally start to really be engaged with the series until I went back to its roots, and played the MSX2 games. I think they're both excellent, and I'm always happy to see more people talk about how important and worthwhile they are to experience. Thank you for this video!
I definitely would agree it's worth trying these games. I played both of these games recently on Xenia Canary. I'll be honest, I don't really enjoy Metal Gear 1 MSX. And it's not because of me being worried about age. I just think the stealth gameplay and bosses are pretty bad. I don't think it would matter to me how paper thin the storytelling is because I just don't enjoy the bs and the bag of tricks just kinda annoyed me by the end. But Metal Gear 2 MSX was really good. Not a perfect game, but I honestly thought it was as good as Metal Gear Solid gameplay wise. And they both had good stories imo. I generally do appreciate the games exist and I think Metal Gear 2 stands on it's own merits to be worth playing imho. Though I guess people be not touching these games for whatever reason. (Like why not try Metal Gear 2 at least? That has good gameplay.)
I am apparently a “metal gear boomer,” though I’m actually gen x). lol. Most actual boomers probably didn’t play this… pong maybe lol. Anyway, I just wanted to say, good video!
I think the amount of retcons in MG2 should not be taken into consideration since every Metal Gear game gets retconned all the time. Just play the game if you want to, "canon" is pretty meaningless in the franchise. One thing I hate tho is the last battle in MG2... like, come on, 'Big Boss', the man who would later be said to be the world's greatest soldier, the guy who fought Snake 1v1 fair and square in the last game -- this time he fights you with a fucking rocket launcher while you are unarmed...and he loses... That always felt bitter in my mouth.
Honestly I gave up for now. The game is simply too annoying in certain aspects. 1. The fact that saves are only in elevators and 2. The controls that make simple tasks horrible. Example one the rolling pin is annoying only because the controls don't allow me to get to the exit perfectly and I stop at a wall or something and the pin hits me. Or the other example of the damn holes in the floor where I'm supposed to go arround them but if you touch the edge of the hole with one pixel you're dead and fuck you, now you lost 30 minutes for nothing. At the beginning it was fun and cool. Now it's not even fun anymore, it's just annoying. But hey, I tried
I tried to play the og first 2 games and i just could not get into them thay wer way way way to out dated and boring but im sher the storys wer cool just the game play sucked
Ive played through 1 and about a quarter of 2, but i couldnt finish it because of general life stuff. Now that the master collection is coming out, i plan on finishing 2. It wsas very fun from what i played. 1 is.... Not worth playing. I dont find the gameplay fun and it doesn't give you much direction
When you play metal gear 2 solid snake you see how much was actually re used for mgs1 entire plotlines and story beats and task you have to do. Its just metal gear 2 solid snake is way better.
They're not fun and the only parts of the stories that matter are told to you in MGS1. Everything else in the story has been retconned so hard that I'm not even sure how canon they even are.

Schneider's frequency is in the manual I'm pretty sure
Gustava was called Natasha Marcova in the original release.
Love the ethos from xenogears music
I'm glad someone likes the Xenogears music!
Now if only someone appreciated the usage of Super Lesbian Animal RPG music.
@1:02 ! Despite being old for cartoons I have actually watched this show and yet I never noticed that!
I have a question: What should I press with the controller to answer the call?
Where did that footage of the Live action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles come from?
its all from We Wish You a Turtle Christmas and im very glad someone finally commented about it besides the friend i showed the video early
Damn OK I'm convinced to try them out again!
Are they worth playing? I'm thinkin of streaming em if I can find a good way to emulate it
most of the gameplay shown in this video was recorded on RPCS3, so yeah. i think PCSX2 on the original version of subsistence will also work, but i havent tested it so idk if there are any weird quirks.
It's funny that the original sprites had Solid Snake as Mel Gibson and Big Boss on the original sprite portraits.
I've heard that mgs 1 originaly was suposed to be a remake to mg 2. Maybe that's why there's so many gameplay/plot points taken from mg2.
I still have the NES original Metal Gear with the fold out map (still in good condition). Really enjoyed it at the time, and am considering getting this new release.
Enjoyed the video!
Bro I definitely feel the same way with being raised around the retro gaming era. Great video dude. I'm finna give the msx games a shot
im not a bro nor a dude
Hideo Kojima always a genius
Started with mg1 and 2
Good games if you approach them with the right mindset.
You take that back about MGSV
"and 5 a big fat waste of everyone's time" Ok sir, I've just found your channel but our relationship seems to be off to a very good start.
im not a sir
OOF NOT SO GREAT A START
Any fan worth their salt should not be telling people to skip these two games. That is nonsense.
@@Xxandrew01mission 51 was never meant to be in game. It was dlc. The game is finished
I dont understand why they chose to remake mgs3 instead of the original Mg1 and mg2
literally mgs3 is still have good graphics and playable
probably because it's the most popular one. honestly im not exactly enthralled at the prospect of konami remaking any metal gear games. i dont even want remakes for the msx games, just ports with a few touch ups and enhancements would be perfect for me.
they say it's because it's the origin story of the series, implying they may remake the rest of the series
U get sneiders codec relativly late because big boss is not giving it you on purpose
lol I played metal gear on the nes, way back in the day. 2 didn't come to the US until much later with the closest we got was snakes revenge.
V was not a waste of time sir..
im not a sir
I think a key reason people shit on these titles is because the US copy of MG1 on the NES was a bit rough as a port, especially with the butchering of the ending. And we didn't get MG2 until MGS3, instead getting Snake's Revenge which is not a great title. So people do not think highly of them.
Im looking for a shortened term to refer to the MSX Metal Gear games so people dont get confused with Solid 1&2. However I feel "MSX Metal Gear" is a bit much of a mouthful, nor do I want too much of a slang like "MSX Gear"
V was fantastic.
And Capcom is stupid to make ANOTHER MGS3 when peacewalker is so damn good, is the real MGSV, and is major plot.
I'm sensing Kyle rees from the medal gear Nintendo art
the game tells you to call jennifer
We need a remake with all the refcon of These games
Onstead of MGS3 Remake they should remake Metal Gear 1 and 2
I am apparently a “metal gear boomer,” though I’m actually gen x). lol. Most actual boomers probably didn’t play this… pong maybe lol. Anyway, I just wanted to say, good video!
The more you look at it, Metal Gear Solid is a little bit more than a 3D remake of Metal Gear 2.
Metal Gear Solid V is great
I think the amount of retcons in MG2 should not be taken into consideration since every Metal Gear game gets retconned all the time.
That always felt bitter in my mouth.
i really enjoy hearing people appreciate the first 2 mg games and how mg2 brought cohesive and engaging story telling to games. great video ma'am🫡
I tried to play the og first 2 games and i just could not get into them thay wer way way way to out dated and boring but im sher the storys wer cool just the game play sucked
i just watched a good summary of 1 and 2 and im gonna start at mgs
Ive played through 1 and about a quarter of 2, but i couldnt finish it because of general life stuff. Now that the master collection is coming out, i plan on finishing 2. It wsas very fun from what i played.
1 is.... Not worth playing. I dont find the gameplay fun and it doesn't give you much direction
As much as I'd like to try these, when you say the game is unbeatable unless you google it I'm instantly put off.
you really did not like the phantom pain.
“Metal Gear Solid V is a waste of everyone’s time!”
No
When you play metal gear 2 solid snake you see how much was actually re used for mgs1 entire plotlines and story beats and task you have to do. Its just metal gear 2 solid snake is way better.
mgs v was fun
Metal Gear?!
First thing i did today lmao.
But im play metal gear after mgs1
Mgs5 gameplay awesome, mgs5 story meh (mostly because it never finished)
This video should just ge titled shitting on mgsv for 20 mins
damn that sounds like a good idea for my next video
I do gotta lol at you saying MGR retains the heart of the series but V is a waste of time.
Great video otherwise.
Mgr is good, stuff elitist
MGS V is a waste of time, and Peacewalker isn't as good as MG 1 & 2?
I don't trust your judgment at all.
They're not fun and the only parts of the stories that matter are told to you in MGS1. Everything else in the story has been retconned so hard that I'm not even sure how canon they even are.
Was going to watch this until you shit on mgsv. You can’t tell me that game isn’t fun.
