    So I actually just finished testing and lubing a whole set. If you want to get rid of the high pitched clack, heres a few things. Thick lube like Krytox 205g0, but make sure to also put some on the top housing, where the stem hits the top housing. This absolutely helped tone down the switch and make it more thocky. Also - if you're a heavy typist who prefers thock, this might not be for you. When i really hit the keys hard, the pitch is clacky, but when i type normally or softly, it sound deep.

    I loved the smoothness and springs of this switch but hated the sound so I did some swapping and made two great switches. I threw the CJ stems into an Ink V2 housings which was super smooth and sounded great, and then put Durock POM stems (sold by themselves from Prevail) into the stemless CJ's which gave them a much better sound signature.

    Very interesting! I just checked ThereminGoat's ratings, and he gave the CJs a 73. I believe he does all the reviews stock, and I was surprised based on your video that the CJ didn't score a bit better out of the box given how dependent some other switches are on lube/film.
    (for comparison, the Alpaca V2 = 87, Everglide V3=86, and both box ink black/pink =76, and the budget king Gat yellow (KS-8) he gave 72)
    Just really goes to show how much of the hobby is personal preference.

    • @Keybored
      @Keybored  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah a lot of personal preference in this hobby for sure! Like for example, sound is so subjective and if you prefer deep vs clacky etc. I'll have to check out his review also!

    • @nt4608
      @nt4608 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess the Alpacas are highly rated because of their consistent performance across various boards, I tried the CJ on an IRON165 and Volcano660 it almost sounds like a silent switch..
      When I tried it on the kbd67 lite it sounded, very muted compared to the ink blacks.
      When I tried it on an Alpine65, the CJs sound good.
      it's kinda overly 'board dependent' imo

    In my opinion, the two switch tests need to be back to back with one another in order to really be able to tell a difference. I'm very new to this hobby (only having started this summer) and I started off with a board that has the OG NK Creams even though I've heard a lot of questionable things about them. I love the look of the creams more than any other switch IMHO. I did realize that it did feel a bit scratchy, even with lube and me being a newcomer to the hobby, but after a while the breaking in process really did a lot (they're super smooth). It's been about half a year and they're amazing and I was thinking of trying other switches and was planning on getting the box inks but now I think I might use these new CJ switches in my 2nd build. I have CJ and Epsilons...so smoooove
    Update:
    Gateron CJs have become my favorite. They're quite loud compared to Red Jackets, Tangerines, Gat Oil Kings, Epsilons, and Gat Milky Yellow. It's also high pitched, but not plastic/hollow sounding like the Tangerines or Gat Browns.
    Epsilons are annoying with their ticking when the keycap is struck on the edges so that the stem is possibly ticking against the top housing. They're smooth and lower pitched, not as loud as the Gat CJs.

    How are these so smooth stock? Are they pre-lubed? You definitely made me curious to see if they will dethrone my favorite linears: the Everglide Aqua Kings. I've also seen some reviews on the Prevail Epsilons that seem pretty amazing too. Are we really living in a world where you no longer need to lube linear switches??

    • @Keybored
      @Keybored  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Haha, yeah I started playing a bit of the remastered, so I was quickly thrown back into this throw-back. The crazy thing about the CJs is that they come bone dry. No lube at all, and they are still crazy smooth. Not sure how it's done since I figured POM/POM interaction will be leathery like the NK creams, but not here. Lubing doesn't increase the smoothness too much more, rather it makes the switch deeper instead! I ordered some new aqua kings to check out and compare! I tried one of the earlier aqua kings and they had the worst application of lube unfortunately

    • @ukann
      @ukann 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Keybored Definitely looking forward to your review of the new Aqua Kings. I got mine a couple months ago and have had 0 issues with them. It seems no reviewers has gone to try them again after the initial issues with them sticking but all of the 80 switches I got worked perfectly so hopefully this means they've got everything figured out.
      Also, really love the 2 keys sound test. It's much more helpful to get an idea of the sound of the switch.
      I opted NOT to play remastered because it will just be a huge time vacuum... Time that I do not have hahaha.

    The CJ switches sound like an amazing option. I'm excited to try them out. Is there a difference between the CJ Box and the regular? Also, would you have any recommendations for a silent switch that has about the weight and feel of a Gateron Pro Yellow (factory lubed)? I'm finding the Cherry MX Silent Reds are a bit too light. I'm looking into the Alpaca Silent, but availability on that switch is very hit and miss. I love how in-depth and organized all your videos are, and the cute skits, too! Thank you for the informative content you provide us viewers! :)

    I've seen another video where they claim that opening these switches and re-assembling them together changes the overall feel of the switch and makes it not as smooth as it was as stock- would you believe this to be true with your experience with this switch? (these switches are on the way for me and are not in hand but I feel that opening them and lubing them with 205g0 would be making them smooth anyways and those previous claims would be false, but who knows will definitely find out!)

      I just finished lubing a set but I haven't experienced what you're talking about. I'm guessing if the housing was slightly damaged during disassembly/assembly process, it could happen but if you have a proper switch opener and is careful, it shouldn't happen to you. I think lubing it did make it ever so slightly smoother but it definitely improved the sound.

    • @Keybored
      @Keybored  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmm... I don't know how that will happen honestly. If you look at the mechanics of the switch, most of the "sliding" happens between the lower housing sliders and the stem, so regardless of the top being removed, it wouldn't make it any less smoother. I opened all of mine up and have no issues!

    Do they "glide" like tangerines do? Tangerines stock are very smooth and have that nice glidey feel where they don't have any real feeling of friction or scratchy - lubing them with any kind of grease removes that special feeling by slowing them down a bit. Generally that's a sacrifice that's worth making because that greasy feeling is what smooths out the scratchiness , but for Tangerines, I feel that it makes them worse. Do these CJ switches have this glidey feeling stock, are they nice to use with a light oil lube only?

    • @Keybored
      @Keybored  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      These feel absolutely glidy actually. I know exactly what you're talking about, since I felt like the stock CJs actually felt smoother than with lube. However, the lube helps to bring the sound down to make it deeper, so I was good with that. But if you like tangies, these will be right up your alley! These feel literally like deeper tangies

      They have even more stability, especially when bottoming out. The long springs provide stronger rebouncing force like the ttc gold pinks, and the long stems function just like the nk cream and Durock pom's, more condensed typing experinece and bottoming out pitch. Defenitly worth trying out imo.

    • @TheOneNILO
      @TheOneNILO 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just got mine in today and I didn't experience anything weird after opening them. After lubing there's no difference in smoothness because at stock these switches are immaculate. Only lube for a slightly cleaner and deeper sound.

      I don't quite understand where that came from honestly. The polish is actually when they polished the plastic surface to make it smoother, vs. putting something on there. So there is no risk of making the switch be less smooth by opening them :) Open away!

    I have a quick question: how would you rate this switch vs. the new Gateron X polished switches?

    • @Keybored
      @Keybored  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      From what I saw, the X switches are just polished versions of the original yellows. I remember seeing the other reviewers saying that it's smooth, but Tangerines are actually smoother. In that situation, these CJs will blow those out of the water, since CJs are smoother than tangerines.
