- Explore the biodiverse ecosystems of Suriname through our video series “Forest Types of Suriname”, presented by Frits van Troon, a Saramacca Maroon biodiversity expert and tireless advocate for the protection of Suriname’s forests.
This episode examines secondary forests.
Secondary forests refer to all forests that regenerate naturally after the original forest has been destroyed naturally or by people. This can be after a storm or after people have deforested it for agriculture or other purposes. Secondary forests represent a succession phase: 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 or even 100 years old.
Suriname has ample secondary forests in its coastal areas.
