    Victim of Changes is from 1976 and Painkiller was from 1990. Huge difference from two different decades. This was Priest redefining the metal sound Sabbath and Purple started. This song is awesome to play on guitar. Halford 6 octive range. Often imitated never duplicated. Ahhhhhhhhhhhh hhhaaaaa!!!!

      Through several decades, Judas Priest made exactly the Heavy Metal they wanted. While they have plenty of guitar work, they are Driven by the rhythm section and have never forgotten that no matter how the Shred (Painkiller) or Grind (A Touch of Evil).

      That is absolute and accurate in every way, shape or form! Truly majestic and brilliant for the genre. I will never forget at 17 yrs of age playing this on my girlfriends ( wife now ), Hi-fidelity phonograph. Her mother coming through the living room while Dreamer Deceiver was playing. She thought it was beautiful. Standing by my window breathing summer breeze......!

      @@crackawood absolutely , you can not review classic metal and edit guitar solos. You lose the climatic parts of the song/story vibe. I
      t's like a story with no climax.

      They didn't really adapt till the the late 80s. In the 70s and early 80s, they were the trendsetters. The number of people ripping off Hell Bent for Leather and Screaming for Vengeance by the mid 80s was ridiculous.

      The Blues was the base for all popular rock n'roll. The Beatles and the Stones experimented and pushed the boundaries and inspired the pioneers of Metal like Sabbath, Priest, Deep Purple, Rush. Victim of Changes I think was Priest distinguishing themselves from their peers in the mid-70s and they experimented with a ore mainstream sound in the 80s, probably got pressure from record companies for another hit like You got Another Thing Coming, but they were always hard. I think they heard Pantera Cowboys from Hell years ago and realized they were getting a little too soft, and were then inspired to create Painkiller.

    • @ironhammer8935
      @ironhammer8935 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Painkiller was recorded before Cowboys from Hell was released. They were more inspired by thrash metal bands like Metallica, Megadeth etc. Maybe even from Testament since Halford really likes their music.

    Judas priest beyond the realms of death!!
    A classic priest tune

  • @steelin666
    @steelin666 6 ปีที่แล้ว +85

    Judas Priest really had three major faces throughout their career - metal pioneers ("Victim Of Changes"), metal superstars ("You've Got Another Thing Coming") and metal monsters ("Painkiller") and it's a testimony to their excellence that they can transition between them with ease, unlike any other band I know. They may be one of the most versatile artists in history of popular music. Well, you now have only one major side of them left to discover - and then only everything in between. ;)

    • @joeyblowey3460
      @joeyblowey3460 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll go a step further and mention that with the exception of Defenders of the Faith retaining quite a bit of similarity to Screaming for Vengeance, in their 50-year career no other two consecutive albums ever sounded anything alike. Critics say Firepower is a "rehash" of sorts but it really wasn't (check out Razorfist's review of Firepower for an excellent explanation of why not)!

    There are a million rooms in the house of heavy metal. Much of the time people stay with the music of their formative years, and newer stuff just becomes foreign to the ear. The older you get, the more challenging getting interested in new music becomes. Fortunately, heavy metal is diverse enough that if you can't get into the new stuff, you can go back and explore the older stuff. Exploration of music is how one can achieve an appreciation for newer music, and studying music can further that as well.
    Now, as for your vision of Rob Halford and the rock star "womanizing" thing...

    I think you would like The Hellion/Electric Eye (the hellion is an awesome intro to electric eye, which is the actual song). It's right in the middle between Victim of changes and Painkiller, no as slow, not as shredding.

    • @kaykuri
      @kaykuri 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Excellent choice. The thing about a band like Judas Priest is that their career has at least 3 distinct eras in it, and when I try to think about suggesting a song for Ryan and George that defines the middle era in the 80's "The Hellion/Electric Eye" is what I keep thinking of.

    I love your reviews on classic metal songs. Take into account when comparing this song to Painkiller that this is a 70s song and Painkiller is from 1990, the same year Pantera released Cowboys from Hell, for example. So, Metal in general had "evolved" a lot.

    Victim of Changes is a nice choice for the best of early judas priest. A classic. You guys are right to spot the blues influences as most early heavy metal bands utilized blues guitar. Early priest is probably progressive hard rock. They moved comfortably into heavy metal on the next album sin after sin. Although the key elements: Halfords dynamic range and kk/tiptons hard technical twin guitar are always recognisable. These contributing to judas priests long term status as heavy metal pioneers.

    Just abit of insight from a guitar player on a few comments you guys made - 'that sound' you said you guys loved from various artists of this era (late 60s-early 70s) is a particular amplifier called the Marshall 'Plexi' turned up to 10 thru a 4x12 cab(or 2) with Celestion Greenback speakers... This would be sooo loud it could literally make you nauseous, but it would sound soooo badass!!! LOL Virtually no one can play with that kind of volume these days.
    Also, that 'wobbling' sound in the middle guitar solo you tried to describe is made by a mechanical bar equipped on some guitars that when depressed slackens the strings, making the pitch go down, or when pulled, makes the strings tighter, which makes the pitch go up. It's called a tremolo or 'whammy' bar. You can use it to add subtle nuances or go crazy and pull till the strings snap! Jimi Hendrix was one of the first to go crazy with it...
    The bluesy sound you noticed(good ear!) is basically inherent for this time frame in guitar as heavy metal evolved from rock & roll, which came from the blues. As different people experienced different cultures around the world(thru both war-time and increasingly affordable peace-time travel) different elements were introduced to music, and so you have the Rolling Stones playing an Indian sitar in "Paint It Black" or Ritchie Blackmore of Deep Purple/Rainbow incorporating European classical & gypsy scales into rock guitar and famously Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin featuring Celtic influences, all of which combined with that blues base. It's actually quite fascinating!

    Just re-watched this video. Love your reaction. Green Manalishi would be a great Priest song (it's actually a Fleetwood Mac cover) to see your reaction to.

    Thanks for covering one of my fave JP songs! I want to say that if it holds any interest to you it is my personal opinion that the live version of this song on the Unleashed In The East album/cd is a must listen experience. This is hard to express, but occasionally a band will find the true essence of a song through the many performances of it on their tours, and I feel that it all came together for them in Japan on this night's recording.
    Also on a personal note, I really love the premise of what you are doing here!
