    Honestly, the lyrics are probably the best part about this song. Once you understand the lyrics you realise how creative that chill part in the middle of the song is. The song is obviously about drugs controlling people, and the chill part is the euphoria that someone experiences when they finally get their hit

      Around 12-15 years ago I used to play in a band with an old guitarist that shared studio with Metallica during one of their early albums, in Denmark. In Brøndby I believe. He said Lars was pretty shitty and it caused issues during the recording. But he was very impressed by how much he had improved since then.

    • @madmartigan1634
      @madmartigan1634 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Lars's drumming is crucial to the Metallica sound; it doesn't exist in spite of it. Hetfield has said in interviews, that although Lars drumming is not the best, it forces him to "work around it" in ways that are rhythmically interesting.

I wasn't to psyched but he was always there for me. Wow!!! One of the most killer shows. This was their And Justice For All tour. Instant fan. I was one of those hardcore hiphop heads, but l i was introduced to metal in my 20s by college classmates, i couldn't believe i was so ignorant. Metal is a big ass genre, you can find alot you'll like. All these years later i'm a big hiphop AND metal-fan. You just have to be open minded. Even for his era... Lars IS NOT GOOD. Refer to my previous reply to the thread. Drummers who can hold a beat come a dime a dozen... Lars just simply got lucky. He isn't good. He doesn't know tone or sound, and he is not technical. He simply got REALLY lucky. Even Vinnie (I love Vinnie) is better than Lars, and Vinnie does literally almost nothing technical.

      Lars has one hell of a talent at songwriting, not at drumming, songwriting. He knows exactly what should be played to make a metal song sound good (as proven by the first five albums and the two newest albums). Nearly all of Metallica's songs and all of their greatest work was written or co-written by Lars. Without him Metallica simply wouldn't be as good as they are (or were).

    Master of Puppets is "the"Metallica album. This is the album that established metal as a serious music genre. I remember the day it was released and how heavy music changed from that point on.
    The younger kids were handed metal on a platter. But those of us that were there from the beginning know how important this album was and is. I have been listening to and playing metal since the early 80's and this album is still the standard by which all new music gets compared.

      Db Jones, I don't have to go further back to RTL. I remember when it came out. I was listening to Metallica when Mustain was still in the band. If you have ever heard of the tape trading days that started Metallica, I was part of that. By the time RTL came out I was already a performing musician playing my own brand of thrash.
      I think RTL is the best of melodic Metallica, but MOP is still the album that made metal a serious genre. And I don't mean serious in the world of metal. I mean serious to the rest of the music world.

    You guys didn't get a chance to talk about the lyrics, but it fits the tone of the song perfectly. The Master of Puppets is drug addiction. Specifically in the second verse there is "chop your breakfast on a mirror." So it starts off with someone who is already in the influence of the master looking for high. Then you hit the melodic bridge which represents the high. That easy bridge transitions to the harsher "Master! Where are those dreams that I've been after?" The thrash solo represents with post drug crash. It then transitions back to the thrash chorus where the person accepts the drug as the master "Hell its worth all that. Natural Habitat." Followed by "I will occupy. I will help you die. I will run to you. Now I rule you too."

      Matt Young I don't disagree. I think where he shines is writing in the studio and with his ability to hype up a crowd. His actual skill level (and especially timing) has never been something to write home about, but he was huge part of what made Metallica so epic in their prime. Since around '09 his chops have suffered immensely in the live setting. That bled into the studio on Hardwired as well, which I believe to be his worst studio performance to date, despite it being a solid album as a whole. I saw them twice on the WorldWired tour, at Webster Hall and at MetLife stadium. The former was the best show I've ever attended, and Lars played relatively well. His ability to hype up the crowd in such a small setting as absolutely astonishing. At the latter show, he played terribly, as he did for most of the stadium shows. I didn't notice it in the moment because I was too busy blowing my load that I was watching METALLICA IN PERSON, but free listening to the recording that I bought of the show afterwards, I realized just how lazy, sloppy, and unnecessary his fills really were. As a drummer myself, I cannot respect what Lars has done for metal enough as the drummer of my favorite band of all time, but I also will not be so much of a dick rider as to not point out how bad he has been playing in recent years.

And the lyrics cut right into your soul, whether you are an addict of know an addict. Simple the undefeated, unbeatable, best metal song of all time.

    When I discovered this masterpiece in the late 90's as a teenager, it was against my strict churchgoing parents' wishes. This was the devil's music to them, they literally believed rock and metal was about worshipping the devil. A budding free thinker, I decided to see for myself. I got ahold of a copy of this at a used CD store (remember those, boomers? lol) and settled in that night to listen on my Sony DiscMan, my heart pounding as I pushed play.
    The first track, Battery, changed my life irrevocably that night. I listened to that song probably 6 times before I moved on. This wasn't the devil's music, at least not the way my parents thought of it. This was in its own way beautiful and pure, and it spoke directly to me as a young man. As I moved through the songs, I was quickly becoming a fan for life.
    By the time I finally got to Master, I was already hooked. But this song brought me to a place I never thought I would go. I realized after a few lines that the song was probably about drug addiction, something that was made more explicit in the lyrics later on. I'd heard anti-drug songs before, but something about this was different. It was more sinister, the narrator is gleefully sadistic, and the music itself brings it home in a way that I had never experienced before. When that amazing transition came (at 7:00 in this video), I interpreted that as the heady euphoria of the high kicking in. The subject of the song, having been tempted and tormented by the narrator, his addiction, gave in as he must, and was rewarded by this soaring feeling of fleeting beauty and euphoria. But soon, very soon, it takes on an edge, it begins to get more harsh, until soon you're back into the throes of withdrawal and disappointment and dread. Once again, the tormentor is there, pulling the strings, demanding his payment and punishment. At the end, what sounds like a chorus of demons laugh at the ruin the addiction has wrought on the once-promising life of this person.
    I had to stop, then. I had to think, and reflect on what I had experienced in the last two hours of repeated listenings to only those few songs. As I drifted off to sleep, it struck me just how wrong my parents were about this music. I had been considering trying drugs as an act of curiosity and rebellion, and had access to them from a friend from school. This song changed my mind. I never forgot it. Far from corrupting me and dragging me down to hell as my parents would have warned, instead I received a far more effective message on this subject than I ever got from church. I'm now 36 years old, and I'm still a fan and still drug free. I have two cousins from the same upbringing who are now full blown meth and oxy addicts. They never listened to Metallica back then. I wish they had.
    I have really enjoyed binging this channel, and watching these gentlemen experience this incredible music for the first time. It really brings me back

    Ok, the whole Lars thing is like this.
    83 - 93: He was incredible
    94 - 02: He slowed down and went in a different direction(Hard rock more than metal). Still a very solid drummer though.
    03 - 08: He was lost, clearly but at least tried half the time.
    2009 - 2015: He took the absolute piss! Never practiced, got very sloppy, just stopped trying.
    2016 - Present: Took note of all the bad comments about his drumming and Seriously got his act together. His drumming on the latest album "Hardwired...To Self Destruct" is excellent. Especially for a dude in his 50's.
    **In my opinion**, I think that Lars takes WAY too much flak for his drumming skills. He's a very easy dude to hate on because, honestly, he's always been kind of a dick. But as a drummer, he deserves a bit more respect.
    Hope that answers any questions you guys had on Lars and just wanna say I love your videos! Keep it up!
    P.S: I don't know why, but I really feel like you guys would love the Metallica song "The Memory Remains". Very different vibe to the stuff you've done by them already. Possible reaction? Who knows, all I'm saying is...I'd watch it! :)

      Zach Johnson His drumming on Justice was literally pushing himself to the absolute technical limit of what he was capable of. It's his best by far, and yet other metal drummers at the time were far better. His technical ability was mediocre from the beginning, which was okay with their top notch song writing and his important role in the band. Unfortunately, he's only gotten worse with age.

    Two other points real quick as well:

    2. Now you see how Metallica got so famous with no help from radio or MTV.

    • @ibowlhammer
      @ibowlhammer 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      if they listen to the full album then that is less videos to make, because at some point enough people will suggest every song on the album and they will review every song on that album, that is how epic that album was. Hey LiV, do a video for every song on the "Master of Puppets" album as well as the "Rust in Peace" album by Megadeth, thats the album with "Holy Wars... The Punishment Due" on it and that whole album is epic as well.

    Literally, there's not a day that goes by that I don't play this song on the guitar, except maybe when my arm/hand is injured or if I feel really weak to pick up and play the instrument. While listening to this gem feels so good, being able to play it from start to finish is an entirely different and overwhelming experience.
    Even when I get old and all I could play on the guitar is Master of Puppets, I'm more than happy enough. It's just so fucking fun to play.

    Plenty of the "big" Metallica hits are absolutely insane, but it's really hard to find any songs on the first 4 albums that are not amazing. Some of my favorites are Trapped under Ice, Frayed ends of Sanity, Dyers Eve (if you want an insane drum track), Disposable Heros, Creeping Death, Motorbreath, Jump in the Fire, and Whiplash are just a few that come to mind. I can honestly listen to all 4 albums and never skip to the next song, I love it all.
