I feel the same, I want a backlit screen, but it's important to keep the aspects of the original screen, I love how its possible to see every boxy pixel in the screen, gives a feel of a calculator screen.
Looks awesome. I couldn't unsee the "bug" after you said that about the ribbon. I want to do this to a Pocket now; reluctant to IPS a DMG due to the changes in d-pad/button sensitivity...
I had my doubts, but personally I see little to no difference in the button sensitivity for the DMG after installing the IPS screen. I figured it was worth a shot and worst case I'd go back to a standard backlight but it wound up being better than I had hoped.
Nice job! looks great in a transparent shell. You've made me realise I need to get a dremel, It made flattening the surface look alot easier haha. Also big fan of that extreme green, looks like you've got a great collection. Subbed!
If you don't, you could short out the board by having the back of the screen touch the connector, but also you might not be able to close the shell entirely. Both important reasons to trim the connector!
I suggest using a 3D printed bracket to center the screen and avoid using he tape as it makes the mod permanent and more difficult to service. Also I did this with flush cutters and didn't need to use a file. 9:30 I wouldn't press on the screen, put it to the side and push it in. Sorry, I don't mean to sound critical, just trying to help.
Thanks man. Soon after this I actually got a 3D printer and made a bracket for it as well as a few other handhelds I have. As for pressing on the screen, I agree. Not best practice but I do know my own strength and I never apply too much pressure. Can never be too safe though.
@@linklooklisten awesome! Thanks for not taking my criticism the wrong way. Just trying to make things easier and safer for everyone. Here’s some of my work: instagram.com/arkilytoo Made some mistakes too.
Got flush cutters with the printer too so it was a double win. And yea, I'm not one to read and assume you're being a jerk. I appreciate the feedback and lookin out!
How has your experience been with battery life? I know they mentioned around 3 hours of battery life which is a little disappointing. However, the clarity of this screen is dang good so something to think about.
I got about 3 hours before the batteries died. Then i had to order more because i didnt realize i ran out! Not using my tv remote for the time being! :)
@@linklooklisten Without any mod, the GBP has 8-10 hours (before the batteries died). But seriously, this mod is tempting. The GBP had the biggest screen.
@@alexandrebouvier7731 8-10 compared to the 15 to 30 range with the DMG and color. I wish there was some way to extend it, I love the small form factor. It's a great mod which unfortunately eats more battery, but its worth it to me for the visuals. Personally, if I want better battery, I just play super Gameboy 😆
Yes I think it is worth it that screen look amazing🙏🤯 Id get one right now but im a little worried Japan may not be accepting packages from China at the moment😞
@@linklooklisten haha that's a good mission :-) there have been cool updates recently. GBC full screen IPS is what I want.. I instead brought a GB colour.. it's okay.
@@TheIsolatedGamerz the IPS from funnyplaying for GBC is fullscreen!I used the TFT LCD before, which was smaller, but since IPS came out, I just had to do that. Not having a fullscreen experience especially on a GBC is very unsatisfying. IPS definitely makes it all better.
@@linklooklisten Gameboy is an amazing unit. Would love to get the Funny playing ips. I think it will cost abit to have it delivered to UK. I saw on GBC on eBay with an upgraded battery, usb c and full ips. Cost 150gbp. So around 170-180usd.. I'm so tempted man. I don't even own a switch or ps4. Still stuck in the past. But I prefer simple games that are easy to pick up and play
I also use a silicone mat to work on everything, always keep some spare tools handy in case the main bits in the screwdriver dont fit, always good to have a few screwdrivers that are thin or long, not too bulky.

Best mod video I've seen in a while Very helpful thank you
At 9:50 you trimmed the leads at the cartridge connector. Why did you have to do this? Just curious while I wait for my screen to come in the mail.

3h... So, basically you need rechargeable batteries ...
@@alexandrebouvier7731 yes. Gameboy pocket has always had terrible battery life, I'm not too sure if anything can change that.

The problem you can not have a full menu where you can customize the picture as the ips for the original DMG has pressing the contrast button.
I need one of these but to lazy to do it myself haha
Trimming is the hard part, hopefully they'll sell pre-trimmed shells in the future
@@Angultrathey do now
I put an isp screen in my dmg gameboy. Cant get better. I actually want to play my gameboy again.
do you ear some weird noise from the speaker? funnyplaying are saying that sometime we can ear that and they are shipping a new ribbon with the patch
Yea most backlights cause this, the funnyplaying display is no different. If an update to the ribbon can fix that, that'd be great!
Great vid man. But I hoped this one goes without soldering
If I had a choice. I would go for the GBC mod as it would support more games.
But that clear GB pocket with a full IPS screen, mm mm mmmm
I have my blue/yellow pokemon GBC with an IPS in it already. But my mission to IPS all of the screens is just about complete! Come on gameboy micro!!

Why did you choose the screen without LED hole ?
Want to buy a kit but want to know difference between with and without. Thanks
I chose the lens with the LED hole because my game boy pocket board has a power LED. Earlier models do not which is why there are 2 options.
@@linklooklisten thought you took the one without. Lol
That is why I was asking.
he said without I was confused too
Great video. What size is the IPS display?
Thanks! Visible screen size with the lens on is roughly 2in by 2in
Nice!!!
i like the thought of it but i dont like the thought of trimming up my pockets clear shell
I debated the same but everything trimmed is unseen.
nice work! do you know how big about the screen , ? cm x ? cm,thank you!!
Entire screen size is 6cm x 6.5cm, visible screen size is 4.9cm x 4.9cm
@@linklooklisten thank you!!
Is it just me or is the original better than the ips in terms of ghosting?
Might be just motion blur from the camera, thats why I'm asking..
I think it comes down to the games. Most games look way better on the IPS, but some look better on the original.
what kind of solder station do you use? what other tools or tips do you have?
I use a Hakko FX888-D station with super thin tip. as for tools, i use the iFixIt Pro Tech Toolkit.
I also use a silicone mat to work on everything, always keep some spare tools handy in case the main bits in the screwdriver dont fit, always good to have a few screwdrivers that are thin or long, not too bulky.

Does it run on a power source instead of batteries?
Will work with DC 3V with no problem.
