I don’t think it’s perplexing when you consider the market. There was a wave of handhelds circa 1990, with the Game Boy coming out the clear victor. Then the Nomad in 1995 and Pocket in 1996, then another wave starts in 1998 with the GB Color, Neo Geo Pocket (and later Color), WonderSwan (and later Color), and then the GBA takes over in 2001. Also, Pokémon. You couldn’t play Pokémon on a WonderSwan or Neo Geo Pocket, but you could on a decade old Game Boy.
@@parlinmains I think it was a lack of attempts more than a lack of technology. There kind wasn’t a 16bit handheld generation? The mid-90s got the Nomad (a portable Mega Drive not a ground-up handheld) and the Virtual Boy (not a handheld, poor battery life, and actually 32bit). Proper 16bit handhelds only arrived in 1998, with the WonderSwan and Neo Geo Pocket. Both had good battery life, making them potential threats to the Game Boy, but the Game Boy Color managed to hold them at bay until the 32bit GBA in 2001. Maybe if Nintendo hadn’t gone off the rails with the Virtual Boy, or if Yokoi had quit instead, maybe then we would have seen a 1995ish WonderSwan equivalent.

When you got to the part about alkaline batteries, my reaction was "Who buys that crap?". I've been using rechargeable batteries for most of my life. Nickel-Cadmium as a kid in the 1980s and 1990s, then moving to NiMH and adding the odd Lithium-ion one in adulthood (though those always come with something and can't be used in anything else (if they can even be removed at all) because the manufacturers hate standard form-factors). AAA NiMH are a perennial in my house (with a few AA ones still getting some use, though nowhere near as much as they used to in the days of cassettes and CDs). I cycle through half a dozen sets of the things every couple of weeks running the wireless headphones I use with the computer. Non-rechargeable batteries would cost a fortune. Rechargeable ones get used hundreds of times before they wear out and stop holding a charge. Sure rechargeable batteries cost a bit more to buy, but by the time you've charged them a dozen times, you've covered the cost relative to the non-rechargeable counterpart, and from then on it's basically free until they wear out. I don't actually know how many charges they get, but let's call it 500 and say a set costs $20. That's about 4c per charge. If a set of non-rechargeable batteries costs a tenth as much, you're paying $2 per charge, and a cost of $1000 over the same period of time. What a waste of money! About the only thing that should ever be powered by a non-rechargeable battery is a smoke detector, and the only reason for that is due to how they behave as they go flat. Non-rechargeable batteries drop off in voltage gradually, while rechargeable ones go suddenly, preventing you from getting the low-battery warning.

The theme of the channel is exploring how gaming goes beyond just the latest most expensive technology. Making intentionally low quality videos serves nobody.
@@LowSpecGamer it literally does though. Please don't fight such an uphill battle. You don't make the best videos you can make. Nobody does. Video production is about making the best videos you can make with the time and resources you have. If you were afraid of lowering the quality of your videos, you'd always lose money on them. If you stand by your statement, then you also need to argue absurd things like "budgeting for your video is foolish". Figuring out how low quality your video can be without being too low quality is literally one of the biggest parts of for-profit content production. You really need to reconsider what you view "low quality" too. Unless I've greatly misunderstood the OP, he was NOT using that as a negative criticism. LTT just uploaded a video on tech quickie asking why there aren't any GPUs that are soldered on the motherboard, but failed to mention that only a decade ago, this was somewhat common on consumer motherboards. There are tons of "what about nForce" comments, but not a peep from LTT. The production is high quality, but the content is impressively low. You know about this nunace in video production though, hence why your reply is so shocking and confusing. And if you still disagree that "making low quality videos serves nobody", explain to me why Berd has more than a million subs. Low quality can be done with skill, and that's just about impossible to argue against as far as I can tell.

I can only imagine how things could have been different if the team decided to cut out the link cable port after all, considering Pokemon ended up being such a large phenomenon that it is currently THE highest grossing media franchise in the world. Bigger than Mickey Mouse, Star Wars, Mario, Winnie the Pooh, the MCU, Harry Potter. You get the idea. No ability to trade between the games would have torpedoed all interest in the Gameboy Pocket.

I dont get how nintendo hasnt made a gameboy classic yet. Would be awsome to have a color gameboy with a back lit screen that you can use real carts with but it is in the body of a gameboy pocket. Keeps the original link port and sell link cables and ither accessories. Then nintendo could continue to release multi cards with collections of gameboy games and even release new gameboy games. Imagine making a brand new classic pokemon game for it.
No wonder Game Freak is so protective of Pokemon! I bet the team was absolutely stunned out of their minds at how successful the game is, and continues to be. ... I still believe they should make a true mobile Pokemon game, that's a mix of AR + MMORPG. Let's make the game that Pokemon Go should've been.
1. Nintendo was deeply tied in with the Yakuza, and Japan, despite it's grasp of technology, was, and is, an ancient culture of "honor," where death is preferable to dishonoring your family or clan. Not a concept really understood by the West, but without it, you can not understand Japan. 2. One of the most common ways the Yakuza disposes of dishonorable problems, was through innocuously appearing, yet carefully coordinated "traffic accidents," where one member creates a distraction that stops the target, and a second member plows into them. It is exceptionally difficult to prove any foul play through this method, yet it's an astronomically small chance that those who dishonor the Yakuza keep ending up dead the same few ways innocently. And this is exactly how Yakoi was taken out. 3. The president of Nintendo didn't get there by being a nice guy. It was a mistake of Yakoi, who invented the device that kept Nintendo alive and well, to leave and immediately start developing a similar but more advanced device for a competitor. As Sherlock Holmes would say, you know what happened; your mind just hasn't had the courage to connect the dots already before you.
If they actually removed the link cable port, would Pokemon - and Nintendo - be as big as they are now? Imagine a world where Nintendo did a Sega and became a publisher, rather than making a killing on the Switch.
I have a spot in my heart for my long gone DMG, RIP buddy! But my fav was always my green Gameboy pocket. My friend had the transparent one which I was def jealous of lol. I remember the Gameboy Camera always looked the best on a Packet because of the sharp contrast of black instead of green.
Triple A batteries on a Game Boy Color? What the, it accepted those? I always used mine with double As since it was the perfect fit on the battery compartment.
@@LowSpecGamer It looks exactly like a game boy color, that tripped me up. Doesn't help that when searching for "Game boy color battery" one of the first images I see is a game boy color, with 2 triple As inserted in its battery compartment and they just look loose.

god, i love the game boy light so much. got one of the limited edition pokemon centre tokyo ones (one of 5000!), just the handheld (luckily with the battery door) for like, $80 CAD when i was in high school. i can’t believe it’s worth as much as it is now. i have one that needs a new shell, and weirdly enough, those are being made now too. so my second game boy light will finally get to be pretty (im making a model that never got a release at all wrt screen protector + shell colour + button colour so nobody gets confused) after all this time, and it only cost me $25 for the light and another $30 years later for the new shell for the second one. the pokemon one is essentially mint, but im really excited about having a semi-custom game boy light!
I think Sega could have actually made an impact at this point if instead of the Nomad they released a pocket game gear. Smaller, better screen contrast and most of all a toggle switch for the backlight.
I mean there *was* a brightness dial on the OG Game Gear, but yeah, a frontlight version that could be easier to see in the sun (because play a DS lite out in the sun and you’ll see just how “well” backlights preform out there) would indeed be a pretty good idea Sure, with 1995 tech, it’d still probably need to use the hungry florescent lights, but being able to turn them off completely when outdoors could definitely help a fair bit with the battery light
@@TheMamaluigi300 Playing a DS light in the sun is perfectly possible if you set the brightness to full. My main point though was that the GB already was pretty well designed and there wasn't a lot Nintendo could do to improve it that didn't involve redesigning it completely. With the Gamegear though that still had a lot of room for improvement.
@@TheMamaluigi300 My main point though was that instead of going even further tech wise Sega should have capitalized on the existing advantage the Gamegear had over the Gameboy. They should have tried to make an improved Gamegear. One that was smaller and more efficient to bring it closer to the useability of the Gameboy.
Imagine the idea that out there, there might be a game that should have been a huge success, probably even bigger than Pokemon, but was never released because of someone's decision in a company.

I'm loving these non pc videos, really good 👌
The algorithm will catch up, and this series will age like fine wine my friend. I think you know this already.
I cannot IMAGINE the gameboy without the link cable. Literally I was yelling at the video "WHAT ABOUT POKEMON YOU CANT NOT HAVE THE LINK CABLE" lmao
excellent video!
I still have my game boy pocket from childhood. The battery cover is missing, screen has some scratches and the the buttons are all worn . But it just turns on and works perfectly fine with all my games from my childhood
You make me little bit happy when I watch your video. Thank you man. Thank a lot.
The Virtual Boy is amazing. Thank you Mr. Yokoi.
LOL, I literally said "Oh no!" in sync with the video when the Virtual Boy appeared.
Hell, one has to wonder IF Pokemon would have become this huge media franchise if the link cable had been removed. No wonder Izuchi has a mini panic attack every time he is reminded of it!
Gunpei Yakoi - I'm DONE with portable gaming, I never wanted to make a portable Famicom anyway!
Also GY - designs the Wonderswan.
What?
The shit you have to do to pay the bills when you go freelance
I traded pokemon cards for a gameboy pocket when i was i kid. Back in the days where gameboy color came out. So i was quite far behind. But with the deal i got pokemon red. The original. And i still have it today. Working and all :o
Another excellent video! Just wish you kept the part about LCD technology advancements! I will have to watch it on Nebula! ;)
Came here for some low spec pc's but staying around for these documentary history videos! Reminds me of those "all your history are belonging to us" I would consider these almost as a spiritual successor to that!
Love your videos on the history! Keep at it!
I just bought a new gameboy pocket Learning of the origins was very intriguing. Thanks for the video
So. I am student of Physico-mathematical faculty. And after viewing your videos i taked powerful charge of inspiration to create thinks one's you talking about. I am very grateful for that. Thanks!!!
i remember i wanted a Gameboy Pocket and Pokemon, i got the Gameboy for my birthday but the game i got was Solarstrikers ... i needed half a year to get enough pocket money together for Pokemon Yellow
Your documentary videos are always awesome to watch
Video game historian wishes he was like this. Y'all need to collab on a video like this.
He literally is "like this" though. The Gaming Historian just dropped an hour and 27 minute video about the history Super Mario Land too.
Ohh new thumbnail here too! Love that Surprised Pikachu meme LOL.
This was educational and funny at the same time. I would let my kids watch it if I had any.
Now another reason to still paying the Curiosity Stream subscription. :)
Expect many more bonus videos
I want to but I don't have/want a credit card, the only option :I
@@Neyghene After time using Curiosity Stream is only worth one month. Yes, it is very cheap, but it lacks content. IDK.
Really not a big deal. the app is sluggish and bugged, and in 4 months just watched like 6 documentaries that interested me. No more. sad.
Criminally underviewed top quality videos
Watching and listening to this stories is so relaxing, keep it up🎉
Growing up in the 90's, alkaline batteries were the only disposable batteries I had ever been aware of. Given alkaline battery technology has existed since the 60's, I didn't know Zinc batteries were still the market standard into the 90's.
Exellent series of videos!
Pokemon Blue did not yet exist at 1995. It was the third game, after Red and Green...
Yeah I mixed it up with green in the script
The day when everyone reminded me that "I know everything about some game but never play"?
Oh yes if I remember.
I actually played Ingress a few years later before COVID.
Always doing everything backwards lol
Thank you for the video, I enjoyed it.
Also, nice T.
9:51~10:04 I've legit watched this part over and over again just because I found it hilarious XD
OH BOY NEW LOWSPECGAMER VIDEO
2022 and you made me curious enough to sign up for curiositystream…
Technically Pokémon is the franchise, and the first game was Green, not Blue and Red.
Yokoi also is one of the main creators of Metroid.
If they actually removed the link cable port, would Pokemon - and Nintendo - be as big as they are now? Imagine a world where Nintendo did a Sega and became a publisher, rather than making a killing on the Switch.
One has to wonder
I have a spot in my heart for my long gone DMG, RIP buddy! But my fav was always my green Gameboy pocket. My friend had the transparent one which I was def jealous of lol. I remember the Gameboy Camera always looked the best on a Packet because of the sharp contrast of black instead of green.
Looks like Alex Remembered his Password
I loved your buildup about pokemon. XD Pokemon is now the world's largest grossing media franchise! Pokemon Blue practically defined my childhood.
Nice, great detailed documentary as always LSG
btw still waiting for lowspec cyberpunk2077 part 2
Not sure I can deliver on that
@@LowSpecGamer np, it’s all right, you don’t have to if you don’t want to or can’t do it, thanks for all the work you have done for us so far
The Gameboy Light is a VERY Rare version as it was on the last years of the gameboy itself before the Color version came out.
Triple A batteries on a Game Boy Color? What the, it accepted those?
I always used mine with double As since it was the perfect fit on the battery compartment.
Game Boy pocket
@@LowSpecGamer It looks exactly like a game boy color, that tripped me up.
Doesn't help that when searching for "Game boy color battery" one of the first images I see is a game boy color, with 2 triple As inserted in its battery compartment and they just look loose.
As cool as the Game Boy Pocket is, with adult hands the original brick design is much more comfortable.
15:42 *video abruptly ends mid-sentence?*
Lol Gameboy camera predicted how popular, things like reels, and Snapchat, and Instagram would be.
It's not making sense. You do know Yokoi left to make a gameboy competitor the wonderswan fit Bandai. Feels like a lot of pulling stories out of thin air.
I bought the Gameboy only to play Pokémon, same with the GBA, the DS and 3DS.
underrated channel
No last minute Wonderswan cameo?
That's on the Game Boy color side of the story
If a few things had happened differently, I think the Virtual Boy would have actually succeeded. It is a lot cooler than people give it credit for. BTW I love these videos. Thank you so much!
god, i love the game boy light so much. got one of the limited edition pokemon centre tokyo ones (one of 5000!), just the handheld (luckily with the battery door) for like, $80 CAD when i was in high school. i can’t believe it’s worth as much as it is now. i have one that needs a new shell, and weirdly enough, those are being made now too. so my second game boy light will finally get to be pretty (im making a model that never got a release at all wrt screen protector + shell colour + button colour so nobody gets confused) after all this time, and it only cost me $25 for the light and another $30 years later for the new shell for the second one. the pokemon one is essentially mint, but im really excited about having a semi-custom game boy light!
09:55 Im sure someone else wouldve commented already, but its red/green, not red/blue
Could that be Yokoi's actual last video game project? The Wonder Swan console he designed for Bandai?
I agree with you and believe it or not have said that alkaline is why we have 2 instead of 4 batteries in any Nintendo product.
I think Sega could have actually made an impact at this point if instead of the Nomad they released a pocket game gear. Smaller, better screen contrast and most of all a toggle switch for the backlight.
I mean there *was* a brightness dial on the OG Game Gear, but yeah, a frontlight version that could be easier to see in the sun (because play a DS lite out in the sun and you’ll see just how “well” backlights preform out there) would indeed be a pretty good idea
Sure, with 1995 tech, it’d still probably need to use the hungry florescent lights, but being able to turn them off completely when outdoors could definitely help a fair bit with the battery light
