Makes The Model Y Look Ordinary - XPeng G6

  • A review of the XPeng G6, China's biggest threat to the Tesla Model Y.
    ********
The Tesla Model Y is the undisputed king in the category of mid-size electric SUVs, but the competition is hotting up and the XPeng G6 is the latest Chinese car to go head-to-head with it.
For XPeng, the G6 is a must-win car. Sales have not come as easily of late but since the launch of the very good G9, the brand feels like they've come of age. The G6 is the epitome of their newfound strength, launching as it does their brand new SEPA 2.0 platform with 800-volt technology, mega-casting, cell-integrated body, and a whole host of other smarts, as well as, of course, their XNGP autonomous driving system. Check that out in our dedicated test video.
So is the G6 any good? You'd better believe it. It's not only coming for the Model Y, it's also looking to take a swipe at the established Western brands with their ICE SUVs too and offers an incredibly compelling proposition.
Find out just how good it is in the video.

I'm thrilled to see my new car here. I use the navigation-assisted driving for about 80% of my daily commute, and it hardly requires any intervention from me. The latest OTA update has significantly enhanced its capabilities. Currently, in China, navigation-assisted driving can be used point-to-point on inner-city roads in 25 cities, and on 90% of the highways, elevated roads, tunnels, and expressways nationwide. There are many videos from car owners on Chinese video platforms demonstrating its use, which is a shame I can't share here.

It's a great car the G6, I really like it. Feels very easy to get along with, just comfortable right from the start, no fuss, just feels right. Their best car yet 100%. The ADAS is really good too and I keep getting invites to try the updated version so I'll get round to that at some point.

Absolutely amazing especially cost compcomparison with other similar cars. Maybe slightly sad for the absence of roof protection (well we all know it's getting hotter wherever we live...) and the passenger individual screen. Some partners may influence a choice that otherwise should6be needed. Xpeng is coming with their 3 car production in the EU market as early as 2024 and very inspired by such products. Aside many thanks for this highly educative video which I watch very pleasure and enthusiasm.

It is an issue to be honest. I've had another one this week for an article I'm writing and it's quite a handicap looking backwards. You've got your side mirrors of course but it might be worth them installing one of those digital rear view mirrors to counter the window. If it's not a tall car behind or it's too close, you might not know anything is there. Best just staying aware of your surroundings.

My pure electric car ranged from BYD Yuan EV360 to Leapmoon C11, and then to Xpeng G6. I am really satisfied with this car. It has not fallen out of date for at least half a year. Yes, new cars are phased out very quickly in China, and new technologies are updated too much. He's almost grown, and it would be great if he could survive half a year without being eliminated.

I think the main advantage of Model Y is that the price is ok and for it you get massively practical car capable of not just driving 5 people comfortably but also huge boot capacity. It has much bigger luggage space and on top of that it has a frunk. Internally the things does not look great either. G6 looks very claustrophobic on the driver side and it doesn't seems to offer as much space as Tesla Model Y. The Tesla also looks more modern inside due to the more minimalist design and the display on Tesla looks more premium. In fact the material quality of Tesla Model Y looks to be better than the G6.
Overall despite having some very nice features it is nothing groundbreaking. It is not better than a Tesla Model Y imo. After all the main purpose of an SUV is to be practicle and Model Y is far more practicale. In terms of the tech it has nothing on Tesla so that's not a turning factor. It definitely looks great from the outside but a dissapointing interior. Very claustrophobic for the driver and doesn't come with more space than a Model Y. The material quality is not on par with Tesla. A lot of plastic is used where Tesla not so much. Xpeng should be smart with the pricing.

@m.a3914 Then you might want to judge a car's feeling on how it is when you sit inside. I definitely wouldn't say the G6 feels claustrophobic or that the materials are worse than a Tesla, quite the opposite in fact. But some people love having a car that looks like it comes with zero options and not even a logo on the steering wheel, that's true, others prefer a more homely feel. I think the G6 does a really nice job on that side.
As for space, I do think the Y is bigger in the trunk but also some people mentioned Tesla measure their figures differently so their figures are maybe not quite accurate, much like they measure their 0-100 times with a rolling start.

@@InsideChinaAuto Nope there is no difference in how Tesla measures the space. They measure it in litres. It is just much much much bigger than what G6 offers. Combine that with the frunk and we are close to 2 times more space.
Well I see it in the video and has a lot less space on the driver side than a Tesla. The central console is too massive for some reason and by looking at you it looks to be very claustrophobic. Either way regardless of actually being claustrophobic or not the space is simply less given how massive the central console is.

@m.a3914 And what do you plan to do with it? Sit in the middle of the car? Put a plant pot on your wireless charger? The Model Y doesn't have storage space under the centre console like the G6 so your space argument doesn't quite work. And yes, Tesla measures in litres but how they take the measurements is different. Also they don't have 800-volt so can't charge as fast. And seeing as you're obviously a Tesla shareholder (it's always very obvious) and you now put such value on ambient lighting since the Model 3 got it, the Y doesn't have ambient lighting either.

I think that's what makes it good. It does everything you want it to without a fuss.

@@InsideChinaAuto when placing the order, I had to pay money and I was supposed to pick up the car in July-August 2022. After trying to contact seller several times, I found out that they didn't know when they would have the car and told me to wait or I would lose my money, and I was prepared to pick it up in these months, and in May I bought accessories for the Y model such as a charger, a key, a cover, a tarpaulin for the car, cosmetics, a cable for public chargers, a jack and small items, all about USD 1,200. I waited and in December I received an e-mail that there was a chance, but they were not sure if it would be 100%. I wrote that it would be better if If anything, it's March in the spring, because in the winter I don't know how the batteries work and I'm far from home. And they said they would set it for the 2nd quarter of 2023, I replied that so be it. At the beginning of March, I received a text message asking if I wanted to pick up the car in March. I was surprised and replied that YES. After about a week, I entered my account and saw that my order was not there. I thought it was normal. I'm about to pick it up. I found out from my friend who picked up the car that his car was still on the website even after he picked it up. Miraculously, I managed to contact the seller by phone and after giving the order number, he said that the order had been canceled, I said by whom and he said he doesn't know and tells me to place a new order and pay because the money is gone and wait again. I've had enough after almost 14 months
