    It took a lot of extra time and effort to stop and to re-position the camera for all those extra detailed shot setups. That was very thoughtful of you and very helpful to all of us. And, annoying as it may be, to some, listening to you vocalize whatever doubts or surprises (or frustrations) that are running through your "inexperienced mind" will serve to reduce doubts and confusion for those of us who follow you, in attempting these same operations. ... Good job and VERY thoughtful. ... There really is no point in making such vids UNLESS you can provide help, information, and clarity, which other vids have not conveyed. ... GREAT JOB (As you well know) ... Your extra efforts have been noted and are appreciated.

    Being a trained grease monkey I've cringed and laughed at the way you do some things. You always make entertaining videos and the gotcha strap on the ratchet idea just proves that no mater how much we know (or think we know) someone can always teach us something, a simple idea that works a treat.

    Sorry if I seem picky but you did say to comment so I hope you don't mind...
    if your swing arm bolt is rough, use some emory paper (super fine grit cloth sand paper) on it to get it as smooth as you can. NEVER NEVER let the brake caliper hang. This puts pressure on the brake line and it isn't designed for that. have you thought of using pipe cleaners for the tight spaces? You are a natural born comedian. Love it. Watching your videos is always fun and informative. Great Job. Make sure you do more soon.

    Mark, the advantage of the 12 flat on the socket is in tight space you have moe options so that the wrench handle wont hit anything and the 6 point you have to move to another flat and cant get in to a space.Hope you can understand my description.

    From my limited knowledge, the mark you see on the barel at 14:31 is not a good sign, if you can feel those ridges, it means that the needle did those marks and the bearing maybe bad. When you put back the barel after greasing it, turn it with your finger, if you feel those ridges when turning the barel, it may need replacing.

    Hey Mark. With the bearings, seals and spacers. try to imagine what is stationary and what is moving. helps with knowing what is important to be smooth and clean and what just needs to be clean. also check out an online parts fiche if you need to confirm the placement of parts.

    The grooves in the swingarm spacer are for grease retention. Some use drilled holes also.

    12 point sockets are just for the convenience of not having to turn the ratchet quite as far to line up with the bolt in tight spaces .The inside of those bearing races look fine they were never meant to be finely machined . That washer type thing under the dust cap is a shim .That swing arm bolt would be a good place to have cleaned the treads with solvent and apply red locktite . Many bolts like that swing arm bolt should be tightened with a torque wrench to manufacturers specs .That caliper slider and the chain adjustment mechanism is a good place to put some NEVERSIEZE .

    • @jamesarmstrong2707
      @jamesarmstrong2707 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** TRUE 12 points can handle more torque . But ONLY on 12 point bolts and nuts . Which are usually rare .

    I've seen people use wooden dowel rods to help get those final bolts lined up. As long as the dowel is a smaller diameter than the bolt, you can sort of lever everything into position from the inside. I learn a lot from watching videos like this because I get to learn by watching you fall into all the pitfalls and delays that I'm going to walk into. All of those stupid little things that can fall out of place, slip off, or otherwise be a complete bitch.

  • @jackiewhite6201
    @jackiewhite6201 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Best way to check linkage and bearing is a bar under the back tire lift up and down if theirs any play you have a problem Theirs no contact from bolt and the spacers so you dont need grease. I use my finger to turn the bearing if it feels crunchy change them but to be fair I would change the anyway if had it all apart. When people say re grease bearings it normally a cheep fix to get through the MOT it wont last the play will come back.

    Mark, not sure if this has been told already down in the comments but FYI, 12 points sockets are mainly meant to be used with 12 points fasteners (Such like those used in aviation for example) Just google 12 points nuts and bolts for nice pictures! Hope it helps! Cheers

      Was told the twelve point socket was to be able inside a recessed head perch .In other words , smaller access diameter around the head of the bolt . A good idea lost in translation problems I think . Thanks

    I like your video's man,very informative. I like working on my bikes as well. Tip from me:
    You have to remove the entire swingarm to install a new chainbuffer on some Suzuki's. I did this on my 04 V strom. I was dumb enough to check the swingarm bearings and when removing the sleeves, pieces of bearing and alot of rust came out. Had to wait for 2 weeks for the new bearings, and getting the old ones out was hell. So if you want to check them, be sure you have spares. And I think you realised by now why you shouldn't extend the socket so much :)
    Keep on riding man.

    Save your ratchet buy a good long breaker bar

  • @sam-ln6lt

    hi, you shold use a litiume greas for bearings,

  • @I_Am_Michael
    @I_Am_Michael 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    that's why you use a breaker bar. a ratchet is weak because of the ratcheting inside it. teeth in there break easily. never use a extension on a ratchet unless you want to get a new ratchet afterwards. with a breaker bar no ratchet to get messed up. I have used a breaker bar on front wheel drive hub bolt with an extension. then I have stood on the breaker bar and jumped up and down on it to free it. breaker bar took it.

  • @nakedbeachrider8798
    @nakedbeachrider8798 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Mark if you invest in some Snap-On brand Dual 80 ratchets, they will never let you down and are built to be abused. They have 2 gears instead of 1 and can take very high torque loads. For example the 1/4" drive ratchet is rated for over 90 Ft, Lbs of torque = amazing. That little ratchet takes little space in my tool kit on the bike, but can do the work of a full sized ratchet, just use a snap-on 1/4 to 3/8's adapter or whatever size, because others are too weak to take the torque.

    • @wobblysauce
      @wobblysauce 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A ratchet is not a breaker bar.
      :P

    • @nakedbeachrider8798
      @nakedbeachrider8798 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      wobbly sauce
      He didn't break a breaker bar, he broke a ratchet. He just needed a quality tool. My little tiny Snap On 1/4" drive ratchet can handle 93 ft.lbs. of torque, in theory it could have removed the swing arm nut and the axle bolts...try that with your 1/4" drive ratchet..mine fits in tiny tool kit on bike, no other ratchet needed. Dual 80 ratchets are pro level tools.

    • @I_Am_Michael
      @I_Am_Michael 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      NakedBeachRider plus with SnapOn or even Craftsman if for any reason the tool fails to perform (aka you broke it) they will replace it for free ( I have had a lot of tools replaced when I really abuse them).

    • @wobblysauce
      @wobblysauce 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      NakedBeachRider I know that it wasn't the Breaker bar.. I was cringing when he used the Ratchet.
      I also have the same Snap-on ratchet tools you are talking about and have busted them also.. good thing with that is, you take it back to the store and get a new one on the spot.

    What about the shock? I'm actually using this video to remove my swing arm and replace it with new after damage. In all the shots there is no shock in place and I'm curious how you remove the shock to get the swing arm off. It sits in a loop created by the frame work of the swing arm and must be disconnected to remove the swing arm completely. Not covered at all here. How did you get the swing arm off without disconnecting the shock??

  • @supermick83
    @supermick83 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not so Pro tip for ya Mark. Just something I do if I want to run a rag through something like the bearing shaft on the swingarm is if you have a wooden dowel rod use that to prevent damage or just put insulation tape on tip of screwdriver. Really enjoying these videos fair play👍
