    • @NoRecipes
      @NoRecipes  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Kaye, from my understanding it was actually a popular way to enjoy Jelly in the US and UK historically. In fact Jell-O actually produced a coffee jelly mix about 100 years ago. I'm not really sure why it disappeared in the west, but it could have something to do with the fact that jellies in general fell out of favor towards the end of the last century.

    I made this for my July 4th party. Fortunately I experienced it the day before the party. The agar-agar I bought (from my local Asian grocery store) obviously is different from your agar-agar. According to you recipe, you used 4 grams. It did not turn out well for me (watery after chilled). I ended up using 170 grams of agar-agar! Finally it turned out great. I guess there are different type of agar-agar. Thank you for the recipe.

    • @NoRecipes
      @NoRecipes  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Joanna, I'm sorry to hear it didn't work out. Wow that's a lot of agar-agar. Did it come in a powdered form? What was the country of origin for it? The ones in Japan vary in strength a bit by brand, but I've never seen such a big difference. Would love to figure out why there's such a big difference and if this is a common occurrence so I can warn others.

      @@NoRecipes Agar-Agar from chinese grocery store are from Thailand and the final texture is crispy form not chewy form like yours. Your jelly texture likes used gelatin powder. I'm confused.

    • @NoRecipes
      @NoRecipes  26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@michelelo218 Apparently there are some differences in the thickening abilities of Agar-agar. While mine was not "chewy" in texture it was relatively tender. If yours was very hard, please try and reduce the amount you add.

    • @MarcMatsumoto
      @MarcMatsumoto 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@michelelo218 Agar shouldn't be crispy but it has a different texture than gelatine. It tends to be more brittle and crumbly vs gelatine that tends to be more supple and chewy. I get around this by adding a relatively small amount of agar, but apparently agar powder varies in strength. It sounds like maybe yours was much more potent than mine. Please try reducing the quantity of agar next time you try it.

    • @NoRecipes
      @NoRecipes  ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on the type of instant coffee you have and how strong you want it. I'd recommend making the coffee per the package directions (or however you normally make it) and then using the coffee that you made in this recipe.

    I only found whole agar-agar strips. Anyone know how to use that in this recipe instead of powder? (I want to be able to offer this treat to my vegetarian friends)

    • @NoRecipes
      @NoRecipes  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's been years since I've used the whole strips, so I can't guarantee it will work, but I think the strips have the same thickening power as the powder gram for gram, so you should be able to cut off 4 grams. Then you need to soak them in water until they rehydrate like a sponge (will take about 20 minutes). Then you squeeze as much water out as you can, and you can add it to the coffee with the other ingredients and boil it until the kanten is completely dissolved.
