Good Morning Garrett I enjoy watching Stumpy Nubs, especially his Cool Tools videos the latest video has a mention of a CNC bit manufacturer here in the USA. They have a great selection and a coating that doubles the life of the bit. The name of the business is called Bits and Bits Take care and have a thoughtful day, we’ve lost a lot of great people defending our Rights and Privileges. Thanks again; LT
Hi Lyle. I am familiar with Bits n bits. With all my CNC years of experience, I have come to find that coating, although it helps, is not so much a tool life enhancement. they do have good bits since I purchased from them in earlier days. Of course, I now source bits as well these days.
@@IDCWoodcraft so a minor issue hope you can help with. I watched how you said to use a profile cut. when I went to do that with mine (BTW, i am running VCARVE PRO 11.5 with Longmill CNC Mk 2 30x30. Anyways, in tool paths, i can click on tools and see diamond drag bits both in vetric and in the Db I downloaded from you for the bits I ordered from you.) so my problem is when I go to anything except quick engraving toolpath, i can't select a diamond drag bit. when I try to add a tool, it doesn't have an option for a drag bit... any thoughts on what I am doing wrong?
@@williamhildreth9905 The diamond drag bit is listed as an engraving tool, so it will only show up in the engraving toolpath. If you wanted to show up in another toolpath you have to change it from an engraving tool to an end mill. Does that make sense
Garrett, you're quite the magician! Amazing video. I will be trying this immeddiately. I'm wondering if you tried some of the suggestions, such as using Photoshop or Paintshop Pro to see if they actually save time? Your commitment to teaching other is unbelievable and deserving of all the positive comments below. You do an excellent job. Few people have your talent and teaching abilities. If you have any suggestions to improve the process since you created this video, I'd be interested in learning what those are. I've been watching your videos the past few weeks and I'm learning so much!!! Thank you again for your generosity with you time. I'm not quite sure how to set up the light you suggested when actually etching the glass. If you could give a bit more detail on that, I would be appreciative.
Robert, thanks brother I'm truly humbled by all your kind words! I'm glad you enjoyed it! As for trying out Photoshop or Paintshop, I haven't given them a try for myself yet although I'm sure they would work great for a project like this one here. You could definitely set up the light while etching but I would recommend setting up the light afterwards, it will make your life a lot easier!
You have gained a new Brazilian subscriber! This is a totally AMAZING project that I would never be able to think about or imagine! And it really took a long time to complete. But the completion of this project was gratifying. Thanks for sharing your knowledge! How long did the machine take to machine? This reminds me of a time when I machined Santos Dumont in MDF and it took me more than 18 hours to machine. I already have a CNC as a hobby and I'm trying to profit from it. And watching your videos gave me very solid ideas, which will help me in my future projects! So finally thank you Master! Thanks Garret!
Garrett, absolutely fantastic! I can see the tedium abounds here in something like that. As others have stated, your method and generosity in sharing is much appreciated. I also think that a tablet, pen and a quality graphic editing software would be your friend 💯. I use Paintshop Pro which is highly functional of great quality. While its not as sophisticated as photoshop in the eyes of Adobeites, it is an affordable option that I've been using for over 20 years. Tha k you Sir!
Roy, glad you enjoyed it brother! You're so welcome! I'm glad to be a part of your CNC journey and to pass along all that I can. I've heard great things about Paintshop Pro, I'll have to check it out myself!
Saturday night... my wife and I are still hanging around. We are very intrigued. You mentioned at the beginning that you're there in a consultant role... I have a feeling you might be doing business with a pair of Canadians soon. I figure you'll speak to that more as we get closer to the end!
Hi Michael. It's not often there is a team watching these video. I'll be interested in what you have on your mind. Canadian, American...what's the difference when it comes to creating stuff? We're all in this together.
Garrett, I hung in there twice and followed doing a test sonogram! This is very interesting and very informative. I can see the potential as a very unique gift. I have a granddaughter that is pregnant and considering using her as my test customer (no charge - a gift). I will let you know the outcome when it all happens.
Hi Garret, just watched your video. Here's a suggestion - if you were to Import the image into Photoshop and use the posterize filter, you can actually set the number of levels of grey you want and thereby more clearly define the borders between the shades. Then import the modified bitmap into VCarve and use the trace command on the image and adjust it till it you get the level of definition you desire between the different grays, use the quick engrave to create vectors and then go in with the node tool and adjust them. It seems like you could save a ton of time. Good effort.
Hi Covert. I do not have photoshop. However, your idea is something I was tossing around with the vectric software using the tracing feature with colors. Thank you!!! Keep the suggestions coming!
Nice work but.... did you consider tracing the bitmap playing with shades? I think it would spare you a lot of hours of necessary eye strain staring at "50 shades of gray" :)
@@IDCWoodcraft Here is one "quick'n'dirty" th-cam.com/video/jZpsHoZ2zMs/w-d-xo.html It is the acual time needed to create it. You can notice a pause (no cursor movement), had to answer the door :)
i wonder what this would look like with painted black glass and did a drag with the inverted image, it would probably help it be easier to mount with a backlight in a nice frame. not sure if the paint would interfere with the drag or leave little bits of color in it.
Matt, I'm sure that would look awesome with the black paint. I agree though, it might take some troubleshooting and experimenting with a few different types of paint to see what works best. Let me now if you end up trying it out!
@@IDCWoodcraft I gotta save up some money man. I don't want to go cheap. Those ones go bad real fast, I have learned that. Thanks for the reply. Great videos. Your channel got even my mother into CNC.
Awesome project. As I am new to CNC, it is great to see what can be done and something to strive for. Also the ability to manipulate the software to accomplish this was awesome to watch as well. Thank you so much for taking the time to build the project, video it and publish it. Is there a special type of glass to consider using on a project like this? Thanks again!
accessiblecruisetravel-dre3383, I am excited for you brother! You can typically display this in a frame with a backlight. That would be your best bet for designs like this.
Hey Garrett, First thank you again for directing me to this video. I learned so much. Have a small issue trying to figure out. I have Vetric VCarve Pro. I also downloaded your bit db and have many of your bits. I purchased my Widgetworks drag bit. when I look in the tool path area under bits, I see the diamond drag bits. both from yours and from Vetric. but when I select a tool path (profile) and go to select the tool, i can't find the bits. PS I am running v11.5 Any suggestions to what I am doing wrong. If I select quick engraving tool path, I can do the text I have and fill it in, but how do I just etch the rest of the project?
Great video. Very creative thought process. Interesting way to make the tool you have (CNC router) do something like this. I'd use my laser instead - a half-hour of image prep because it will do the grayscale bitmap just need to adjust contrast & trim unwanted stuff from the image and then hit the go button. The laser won't do justice to it on glass but would be perfect for acrylic or even wood. If glass is the material this is the way to go though. I also like the initial scanline technique - even with a grayscale engrave of the bitmap on acrylic, it might be a cool addition to add the first set of scanlines to emphasize the "sonogram scan" aesthetic.
Hi Jim. It is definitely an interesting project. I would like to see if I can play with greyscale in an easier way. Glass is one medium. I think acrylic would be better.
Garrett, when running the drag bit have you used any oil with it? When cutting glass, we’ve always used some mineral spirits to keep the glass powder under control and keeps seems to keep our cutters sharper. Just curious of your experience with the tool. Thanks, great video!!!
Hi Chris. I don;t find glass dust to be an issues since the unit never spins. However, I think the idea is good to extend tool life. I can also see how it completely keeps the dust under control. Great idea.
Cool! I'm only halfway through this, but very intrigued, ...because I think I could devise a way in Photoshop to do this in a fraction of the time, but I'm not sure yet. I'll have to play with it sometime, and see what I can do, and see if I'm able to convert it to something that VCarve can utilize. Hmmmmmmm.....
I recently did a similar project and attempted the "scan lines" in a similar fashion and struggled. I was making arc lines, not circles and now I know why it didn't perform as expected. Great tut.
@@ChristcrossCrafts Yes. When I get worn down on doing long videos, I always remember it always produces the best results when I don;t rush things and make they are done as right as I can.
You can easily generate those intensity profiles automatically with a vector graphics package like *Inkscape* using the 'trace bitmap' feature and appropriate threshold settings and path simplification. I would have done all the main work in a vector graphics program and just imported the resulting SVG file into my preferred CNC package. 🙂
Brilliant, Thank you Garret-awesome all the way around. I was going to do something similar with my first child back in the early 90's, Silk screening the ultrasound image. Now that I'm starting out in CNC and learning on my SainSmart 3018, (Hind site only happens when you do it anyways) I'm debating purchasing the 30x30 LongMill and after gaining some usable skills this would be a great Project. Thanks again for a very informative video. Who gives a dam how long the video is from criminy sakes its 2021 technology skip forward, keep it up. I tell people their lucky it wasn't a 35 mm film.
Hey Mike. Yeah, i stopped appologizing for long videos. It is what people have asked for...step-by-step. I'm glad to see you getting ready to step up to a better machine. When do you plan on going for it? Will you do me a favor when you order it...can you use the link I have in the descriptions of the videos or from my website? It helps me out a bit. Thanks. and let me know when you order it. I'll do the happy dance for you!
Great work maybe we could use the bit map tracing in the color mode then select 3 colors. This may help creat those circles then delete the one you don’t want
Garrett you have been showing me a lot about wood design... omg I am now wanting to do glass!!! 2 things... what program did you use to etch the glass? In a previous comment someone said they used the Wacom tablet and pen... I have one, did you every get one if so did you use it... I am very curious how to use it with Vcarve.
Carolen, I used Vetric for this one my friend. Sorry, I didn't try out the Wacom tablet/pen so I'm not sure if this ones a good option but you could definitely give it a shot and see what you think!
@@IDCWoodcraft ok thanks! i also read that not all diamonds are made for all materials. also angle does matter. Are Widget Works made of a certain material? I am not in the US so i have to find a manufacturer in Europe to get my tools from that i can use with glass .
@@richardtepas4832 widget works makes diamond engravers for industrial applications. Some of the companies they sell to are general motors, Campbell soup, and even the national aeronautics space administration. Having been an engineer, I understand the standards companies have to stand up to when they sell a companies like these. Would your works also has a 90° replacement tip. I always recommend that as well
So in the video you said the diamond engraving bit should cut at .05" but you set it to .1" in the video. But then later in the video you said .005" inches. So I am confused which depth that bit should cut at :)
I'm using vCarve and was following along. I was about halfway through the video and very frustrated because when all Levels were turned on the result didn't look anything like the sonogram. I finally figured out that, even though I was working on the White Cut Level, I needed to have the image selected so it would show the true white spots. When the image is not selected the white spots are much much larger and that is what I was outlining. I thought I'd mention this in case someone else is doing the same thing.
Good call Dan, This project gets complex really quick. It can be hard to keep track of everything. Thanks for wanting to help out another brother or sister CNC'er!
Wow amazing sir good job . I learned so much from this video also from others . Are u thinking to buy laser cutter ? I have cnc machine also and I do project as well but I was thinking to buy laser as well .
I like the video, but I think this is way too much work to prep for my router. I am building a MP-CNC router now, so I don't know how this software works yet, but seams like there should be a way to use Inkscape's "Trace Bitmap" feature to get the vectors needed. I think I will try a project like this, but I will use my laser. That way I can just burn the image on acrylic and not rebuild it from scratch and can be done with the entire project in about 1 hour. Thanks for the video. Thank you for the ideas.
@@IDCWoodcraft I have 2 lasers. A 20 watt diode laser that was about $300.00. The other, a 60 watt CO2 laser I got for about $1700.00 from china. Very cheap, but does everything I need. Hi Craig. Yes, this is a very cool project indeed
@@IDCWoodcraft so your finished project is it framed and led lights installed some how ? I’ve been thinking about the project all, just how outside the box thinking that is. 😊
@@craigwesson1788 Yes this is a total outside the box thinking project. I will probably shoot another video on it because I had got a much better and faster technique. You can buy LED lighting from Amazon and build it up in a frame.
@@IDCWoodcraft Well I would love to see another video on it. It’s fascinating !
Good Morning Garrett
I enjoy watching Stumpy Nubs, especially his Cool Tools videos the latest video has a mention of a CNC bit manufacturer here in the USA. They have a great selection and a coating that doubles the life of the bit.
The name of the business is called Bits and Bits
Take care and have a thoughtful day, we’ve lost a lot of great people defending our Rights and Privileges.
Thanks again;
LT
Hi Lyle. I am familiar with Bits n bits. With all my CNC years of experience, I have come to find that coating, although it helps, is not so much a tool life enhancement. they do have good bits since I purchased from them in earlier days. Of course, I now source bits as well these days.
Thanks a lot for this! Its defiantly mind warping to think this through, but I can see doing a lot of different things with this.
Hi Mike. yes this has a ton of potential.
Hi Garrett, another great video. I’m definitely gonna try this as soon as I get back to my computer. I wish Vetric would run on Mac’s or my iPad.
Hey Tim. Can't wait to see what you do here.
Yes, you and many others wish Vectric would do that.
Amazing work Garrett! The results are fantastic, well worth the time and effort. Keep up the great tutorials.
Thanks Paul. I'll keep em coming!
Thanks for sending me the link Garret
My widget just arrived today
Can’t wait to try it
William, congrats brother! Shoot over a picture or two once you get your first project carved with the new engraver. Id like to see them.

so a minor issue hope you can help with.
This was very informative. Great work. It looks great.
Hi Ryan. thank you.
Jeez Garrett! I been doing this all my adult life for the NSA..... Just think of trajectories for your arks and you have my career!
Wow, you mean I've been getting into rocket science?
@@IDCWoodcraft It's not rocket science, it's just a lot of '1's' and '0''s'..... :-)
Incredible idea. Great work
Thanks Bob
Oh this is so cool! I wish I could do this for my wife.
HI Bengston. At least you know how to do it if you want to for her.
Hi Eduardo! Welcome to the community. There really is no limit to what we can do with a CNC. The project engraved in about 45 minutes.
Love you work and effort.
Thank Glenn!
Garrett, I hung in there twice and followed doing a test sonogram! This is very interesting and very informative. I can see the potential as a very unique gift. I have a granddaughter that is pregnant and considering using her as my test customer (no charge - a gift). I will let you know the outcome when it all happens.
Paul, this is an exciting challenge and for someone special. I definitely want to see what you do!
40 minutesd in and still watching
Larry, glad you liked it!
Can you do that with GIMP? It's free.
Thanks so much!
Todd, you're welcome!
Nice work but....
did you consider tracing the bitmap playing with shades? I think it would spare you a lot of hours of necessary eye strain staring at "50 shades of gray" :)
lol Zoran. I didn;t think of all the alternatives. Perhaps you can provide a light demonstration of the technique you are refering to?

i wonder what this would look like with painted black glass and did a drag with the inverted image, it would probably help it be easier to mount with a backlight in a nice frame. not sure if the paint would interfere with the drag or leave little bits of color in it.
How did you do the edge lighting? I've never been able to get it that brilliant. Thanks for the great idea and instruction!
yfx4, it may be deceiving based on the way I make my videos and the lighting I use my friend!

Hi Bryan. Thanks for the pat on the back. It was a difficult video to make.
No special glass...plain old window glass.
Loving this. Thank you tons.
Hi Paul. you're welcome!
Garrett, Great video. I can't wait to do this myself. How are engravings like this displayed. Thanks.
accessiblecruisetravel-dre3383, I am excited for you brother! You can typically display this in a frame with a backlight. That would be your best bet for designs like this.
This is amazing
Hi Jerry. It truly is a very cool project. You going to try it?
Hey Garrett, First thank you again for directing me to this video. I learned so much. Have a small issue trying to figure out. I have Vetric VCarve Pro. I also downloaded your bit db and have many of your bits. I purchased my Widgetworks drag bit. when I look in the tool path area under bits, I see the diamond drag bits. both from yours and from Vetric. but when I select a tool path (profile) and go to select the tool, i can't find the bits. PS I am running v11.5
Any suggestions to what I am doing wrong. If I select quick engraving tool path, I can do the text I have and fill it in, but how do I just etch the rest of the project?
Dorinda, send me an email with a screenshot and we can work through your problem. I am happy to help!
Great idea.
Amazing
rjpatt, glad you liked this one my friend.
Absolutely stunning
Do drag bits require vectors to work?
Hi Kevin. I have also found a better way. I think we discussed this in email briefly yesterday. All designing of this nature requires vectors.
I recently did a similar project and attempted the "scan lines" in a similar fashion and struggled. I was making arc lines, not circles and now I know why it didn't perform as expected. Great tut.
When you trim all the lines, could you not select all your bubbles and use the trim tool to trim all the lines "Outside" the selected bubble vectors?
Hi CC. you know, I didn;t even think of that. Yes. Thank you.
@@IDCWoodcraft great video BTW. Long hours usually produce the best results... proven here.
Carl, you're totally right! That's a great idea, thanks for sharing! I'll give this a try on my next project!
The automatic trace Is not the Best, Is worth effort make It your self, cleaner vectors

Hi John. I'm not sure what you are talking about. Can you be more specific?

So in the video you said the diamond engraving bit should cut at .05" but you set it to .1" in the video. But then later in the video you said .005" inches. So I am confused which depth that bit should cut at :)
Hi Adam. I goofed on the .005" The setting is 0.1. It can also be set to 0.05 for a lighter scribe.

Hi KG. Yes, it is a lot of work. A aser would definitely be faster. Not everyone has a laser. That's why I show the router method.
@@IDCWoodcraft I have 2 lasers. A 20 watt diode laser that was about $300.00. The other, a 60 watt CO2 laser I got for about $1700.00 from china. Very cheap, but does everything I need.
