@@MaxDendy Yes, it was slightly more than the Steam Deck OLED 1TB, I paid $661 USD. It was missing the charger and the cardboard stand pieces but I’ve got lots of USB C chargers so it’s no big deal. I’m playing Ratchet and Clank: A Rift Apart right now. It runs excellent on the Ally X, the colors are vibrant and clear. Since I play my games on the PC, using windows is no big deal, though it is a bit of a pain to tap on the small areas of the Ally X screen to do things. I find that it’s better to choose a game to play, take the time to tweak the settings to get it to play well and then play it. Switching between to many games seems to be cumbersome for the Ally X, or maybe I just have to put the time in. The Steam Deck definitely has the leg up on ease of use from what I hear. One game in my library that I had been wanting to play is Farcry 6. It runs perfectly well on the Ally X but it is so hard to see the enemies because of the point of view, they are too small. I still love my switch oled that is a gaming a handheld this is soley a console which is what i prefer. The pc handhelds do look nice but im not looking to get a gaming handheld that is a pc. Is tempted to get a steamdeck at some point since its cheaper and acts more like console than handheld pc from what i seen.
Steam Deck does sure resembles a console, but it still is not. On a console you are guaranteed all the games will run, but it’s not the case with the Steam Deck. On top of that you have to tweak the settings.
The rumors have been around for a long time now. The last thing was something related to drivers and support of third party devices. No official statement that SteamOS will come to ROG Ally for sure. It’s hard even tell cause these windows handhelds update so frequently. They are laptops with the controller attached and being updated like laptops. Almost every year. In such conditions it’s hard to create an OS that will work on all these devices. So, I’m not sure what is the point of releasing SteamOS on ROG Ally if we’ll probably see new generation of Ally in a year or two.
Biggest Deal breaker is "Price" wherein other consoles/handhelds are far cheaper. If I could play a game on another console/ handheld then it would be wiser to buy the cheaper alternative. Another thing, if you're already used to having mobile phones with OLED screens then why buy something 5x or 10x more expensive that have a downgrade screen that it feels demotivating to use
I do not think "other" handhelds perform as well as this one. And console problem is that games are so expensive compard to steam and you can play any game on it, unlike consoles.
@horticultural261 the Ally X is undoubtedly stronger in performance. What I meant in "another console /handheld" was literally play on PS5 or gaming laptop or steam deck whichever you fancy. Its just that you can buy a ps5 with game included but still much cheaper. You can play triple A games on steam deck and it's still cheaper. Which is why I commented that "price" is the deal breaker
@@MaxDendy I dont get that tho cause if your a gamer buying a console are a device like this you have to good Internet either way streaming are local play
@@MaxDendy Completely unacceptable at this price point tbh. The Y button issue appears to be caused by mashing the button in intense gaming sessions. Asus is looking into it, but I'm worried it's going to be another microSD slot fiasco of plugging their ears and putting shades on. This sucks because I'm in the market for a good handheld, but all of these devices are compromised in some way. Considering the SD LCD, but the LCD on the Ally is just unreal in comparison. Don't know how Asus did it, but the contrast is crazy for IPS.
This is crazy man. They all are flawed. So, the only thing left is to hope for the warranty. I would buy from the shop where I could return it if something happens. I’ve used a lot of devices over the last few years and a lot has failed. My Asus ROG failed, my Xbox failed, my iPad failed. And all of them were either exchange for the new one or the shop gave me my money back. So, don’t deprive yourself of pleasure. Get what you prefer from the trusted retailer, enjoy it. If something happens return it.
@@DrakonR that was reported as being an issue in the first batches of the Ally X. I forgot which particular model/serial # but I had my Ally X for more than 2 months now and I had no issues. The only black screen issue I had was from disconnecting my eGPU but I managed to fix that using a command prompt. The squeaky buttons was a pretty uncommon issues which can be remedied using either compressed air or realigning the springs. The squeak itself is caused when the springs are slightly misaligned
@@I3aMb00 new posts show up with the black screen issue so I doubt it's just an earlier batch problem. Seriously sounds like poor QC that rivals that of Samsung.
The best thing about steam is how you can swap games between devices by installing all of your games onto a single hand drive & simply sharing that hard drive. I have over 180 games on a hard drive & a half a dozen different devices can use it, but not the ROC Alley 1.0 b/c the original is broken from poor coding & cannot run games installed off a hard drive that every other device under the sun can run. If they have not fixed this issue with the X version of the Alley than buying this will be the worst purchase you’ve ever made. No way in heck I’m paying 800 to find out if they have fixed their stupid jankity tech.
Hmm. I need to check this out. May I ask you, do you have a legion go by any chance? What other devices do have this feature working besides the Steam Deck?
@@MaxDendy I have 4 Aya Neo devices, but one I don’t use, I have original roc alley which I would not use, I have a legion go, a one x player, a windows installed steam deck, a windows gaming tablet that basically has the same specs as legion go. Trust me if you install all of you steam games onto a single hard drive you can swap them between devices with no additional downloads. There really is only a small # of games that legit don’t work on an external hard drive. I just purchased the pc port of Until Dawn & even it works installed onto a hard drive. But the original ROC Alley is partially defective & cannot run games off of an external HDD that every other system can run. Sadly.
@edwardlashley3572 that’s amazing. I need to implement your system of storing games haha do you notice any difference in performance/load time compared to internal storage?
@@MaxDendy no not with 99% of games that run off a hard drive. Forza games or Red Fall or some stuff ain’t gonna run off anything but you internal SSD but that ain’t most games. You can buy an external SSD $300 for 4tb of you want. But I got a 6 tb hdd & you are really only gonna get that much store in hhd format but on it is over 180 games that all work with no issues. That’s why the ROC Alley pisses me off. There is true value here in running your stuff off external hdds. A roc alley would fair better with an external SSD but it’s expensive & I got burned by one external SSD that was defective. It’s newer technology so less reliable.
Dpad is fine for me. At least it is better than on the og Ally. And I can navigate windows, I just tried to say that it’s uncomfortable to do on a small screen with a controller and a touchscreen.
True, price is crucial. But you need to take into account the capabilities and what the device has to offer. Do you think ROG Ally would sell more than the Steam Deck if the price would’ve been the same?
No. It’s not worth it. Tiny ass 7 inch screen. Not OLED. Sorry, but the screen is a huge deal breaker. I’ll just stick with my Steam Deck OLED until something better comes along.
I got you. The screen is also small for me. But the LCD Steam Deck and Switch OLED also have a 7 inch screen. And they are very popular consoles nonetheless.
When you have an ISP panel & when you active vivid gaming mode from the AMD software app, if the panel is any good at all it’s going to mimic an OLED screen & while it’s not gonna fully replicate OLED it can get reasonably close to simulating a similar effect. That combined with how much more horsepower one of these devices has & what you can do with that horsepower if you know what you are doing makes the steam deck obsolete. The deck can’t compete with windows running either fluid motion frames 2.0 or lossless scaling.
@@homiedogg6415 you lose vivid mode when you don’t have AMD software installed. get yourself an Aya Neo Air S1, then you’ll see something fantastic. HDR only “works” with a handful of games & in several games it’s just sorta there, but it isn’t necessarily doing all that it can do in every instance in which it’s technically utilized. OLED combined with AMD vivid color mode works w/ every game. Even so, a regular ISP panel using vivid mode & upscaling to 2560 or even running natively at that resolution is gonna crush OLED steam deck & it’s puny 1280p resolution. The Legion Go kills the steam deck if you activate vivid mode & run it at high resolutions.

Find me another $349 device running Alan wake at 30+ FPS in Low-Med like the Steam Deck. Steam deck was never designed to run the latest and greatest. It is a PS4, PS4 Pro, PS3 and early PS5 in the palm of your hands. It's somewhere close to a 1050ti witha better architecture and faster LPDDR5 memory. You really cannot compare it to a $625-$899 Rog Ally / Ally X which only gives like 14-20 + frames in double the wattage. And is more expensive than a 4080. And then the shady Asus Customer service vs Steam deck + iFixit experience is amazing even in countries the SD is not officially sold. ls the Rog ALLY faster then the steam deck ? ABSOLUTELY... There were faster handhelds than the SD even before the stream deck was released. SO is my 4080. That's not the point. 349 VS 699 / 899 is the point. Steam deck is the BEST valued handheld in the market with the best community.
Totally agree with you. But there is a market for Asus ROG Ally too. Steam is not a windows handheld. So, sometime it’s not only about the value, but about the preferences. 349 is what now, 256 lcd deck? OLED is around 700 dollars and at this price you can compare it to the Ally. Even more, I see a lot of folks on Reddit getting first gen Ally for 300-400 dollars, open box. So, price varies from place to place. But if you ask me, what I would choose for a handheld right now. Just one handheld. Bro, I would get the switch. Even though it is worse in terms of value than the steam deck. Games are so expensive on the switch. But I just love it and it has something that I need to- exclusives.
@@MaxDendy "Steam deck... It is a PS4, PS4 Pro, PS3 and early PS5 in the palm of your hands." Wrong on all accounts. SD is definitely meant to play older titles. "You really cannot compare it to a $625-$899 Rog Ally / Ally X" Absolutely it can be compared. Depending on region, the difference in price is about $100 between the SD OLED 1tb and Ally X. "which only gives like 14-20 + frames" Only? When portables are only pumping out 30-45 fps, another 14-20 is a massive improvement. "And is more expensive than a 4080." lol. No, it's not. "And then the shady Asus Customer service vs Steam deck + iFixit experience is amazing" Seen plenty of horror stories from both. Asus has the spotlight on them, but Valve isn't exactly squeeky clean. "Steam deck is the BEST valued handheld in the market with the best community." Might be the only remark worth agreeing on.
@@DrakonR if you compare the spec sheet , yes it's wrong . A PS4 gpu is like a 750ti . So a steam deck is very much on par , Its close to a 1050ti but with faster and more Ram. But a PS5 is a 2080. But if you compare the games it can run , it fits . The SD can run all PS4 games and most early PS5 games . It struggles to maintain 30 in few like Alan wake 2 but using Lossless scaling and frame generation easily get us more than 2x to 3x the FPS. And 14 Fps For an extra $200-300 doesn't make much sense to me. Especially when lossless scaling and frame generation is a thing.

I like steam deck a little more just because I don’t really want to handle with windows
Understandable. That’s why I prefer Linux on the Ally
@@MaxDendy but SteamOS is coming to Ally from what I heard?
@@refrefwgwgwegewit is, but you can get bazzite now
Same, but bazzite is basically the same experience
When you pair thos device with ge force now ultimate its basically better then a ps5 pro lol and handheld
True, if it works flawlessly. Some people have bad internet
@@MaxDendy I dont get that tho cause if your a gamer buying a console are a device like this you have to good Internet either way streaming are local play
I mean if you have bad internet it is better to get a console rather than a streaming device. Ps5 + ps portal is not an option in that case.
Even better if you pair it with a docked RTX 4070 Super as an eGPU using USB4
I was really mad about the noise of the trigers but it just went away overtime.
I’m happy to hear it. I hope mine will go away too
Your trippin hitting it with a hammer
pls review legion go
I will soon! Stay tuned! 🤩
People are reporting black screen crashes caused by the Y button. Squeaky buttons.
Really bad QC from what I can tell. Puts Samsung displays to shame.
Wow I haven’t had any problems with the screen. But the squeaky triggers is crazy to me.
The GPU on ROG Ally X is also better than on Steam Deck and Legion Go
The big ass bezels stopped me from getting it, everything else looks great
Can’t wait for the sale tho not gonna pay 800 for it
This is the way
When will there be a sale and have I missed it?
If you can get it for the open box price of 680 id say yes its worth it but 800 dollars naw
Totally agree.
You better convice me to blow 3 month of salery on this
😂I’m not convincing anybody. You form your own opinion based on a review 😉
@edwardlashley3572 thank you so much for that info. I’ll consider using my seagate 2tb HDD for that.
Shouoder buttons are fiiiine. Its the dpad that sucks. And also, Ifyou cant navigate windows
You must not be very smart. Steamdeck is lame
Dpad is fine for me. At least it is better than on the og Ally. And I can navigate windows, I just tried to say that it’s uncomfortable to do on a small screen with a controller and a touchscreen.
Price is the deciding factor, look at the sales of the Ally X for example it’s poor
True, price is crucial. But you need to take into account the capabilities and what the device has to offer. Do you think ROG Ally would sell more than the Steam Deck if the price would’ve been the same?
With that tiny screen and 16:9 aspect ratio = pass
And you lose VRR with OLED. I think the screen with fantastic actually
How can you say the screen is bad, its 120hz and 1080p and VRR. Its better than switch and steam deck.
Grate review. Little bit disappointed for russian! sticker on your original white Ally ("Сделано в Китае").
Kazakhstan my friend.
And if you use typec to display prot cable 1.4
Vrr work? I bought dp 2.1 cable?@@MaxDendy
@@YosefElgart no, it only works with hdmi 2.1 unfortunately
My tv and monitor 2.0 hdmi only 100hz
So i using dp cable
And dock recomdation with dp 1.4 and 2.5g internet? I dont use adapters on adapters@@MaxDendy
@YosefElgart the Jsaux dock from the video is DP 1.4 but it still won’t work with your 100 hz tv. I mean it will work and maybe you’ll get 100 hz, but no vrr. As far as I know TV with 100 don’t have freesync which is needed for VRR on Asus ROG Ally or other handhelds with an AMD chip
There's so much wrong here..
@DrakonR what do you mean?
@@MaxDendy "Steam deck... It is a PS4, PS4 Pro, PS3 and early PS5 in the palm of your hands."
Wrong on all accounts. SD is definitely meant to play older titles.
"You really cannot compare it to a $625-$899 Rog Ally / Ally X"
Absolutely it can be compared. Depending on region, the difference in price is about $100 between the SD OLED 1tb and Ally X.
"which only gives like 14-20 + frames"
Only? When portables are only pumping out 30-45 fps, another 14-20 is a massive improvement.
"And is more expensive than a 4080."
lol. No, it's not.
"And then the shady Asus Customer service vs Steam deck + iFixit experience is amazing"
Seen plenty of horror stories from both. Asus has the spotlight on them, but Valve isn't exactly squeeky clean.
"Steam deck is the BEST valued handheld in the market with the best community."
Might be the only remark worth agreeing on.
