  • In this video we are finishing up the Bushcraft knife and sheath build with a custom handle for my Ferro Rod. It will match the walnut and black/glow-in-the-dark handle scales and brass lanyard tube on my knife handle. This is a simple build but really helps set this Bushcraft set apart from the rest.

Not sure this will qualify for your give away , but it doesn't matter as i simply want to commend you on both your craftsmanship and also your warmth and integrity as a person. It's a joy to watch you at work and as an outdoors enthusiast myself i very much enjoy the projects that you pick to do. Whoever wins your axe should feel honored to have contributed and to have such a quality piece. I'm happy to have contributed to your subscriber list and i'm looking forward to seeing it reach one million which i'm sure it will. Keep up the great work and thanks for being on here.

The drive of an artist is always to achieve perfection in their craft. What you see as a flaw turned out to be a thing of beauty.Very creative as well as functional to put low in the dark materials in the handles. Makes it so much easier to find in the dark!

Ya, I know,You have a reputation to keep up. Little mistakes do happen, it's called prototyping. For a bushcraft project, it need not be perfect, just functional. I have found that even though you are a craftsman you are honest in your approach, and say OOPS if needed in all, of our projects, I've learned a lot, I'm sure others have also. Therefore, don't beat yourself up over some tiny error. One of the greatest craftsman of them all is a man named Norm Abrams. He always builds a prototype before the real stuff, finds the little errors and variances, corrects them and makes wonderful stuff. You don't have his shop, expensive tools, rare woods, or a big TV show behind you, but you do alright. ;-)

Very well done, Sir. Perfect fit and finish all around -- especially the smooth grip of the sheath to the knife and rod. *Pro Tip* -- Add one of those little spring-button slide locks on the fero rod lanyard. When you loop the lanyard around the bottom of the fero rod, like you did at the end, the slide lock cinches up nicely. Your fero rod will never fall out.

Another very informative video on what actually is possible to do with a little knowledge and and time and to how we can take a very basic item and change it into a work of art. Love the fact that you have put thought into the little things like the glowing liners, what a genius thought! I was skinning a deer a while ago and we ended up having to work past sunset for the carry out and lost my knife as I put it down and that was the last I saw of it😂 if it had glow in the dark liners then id still have it😂 awesome addition to the build so well done👍🇦🇺

Awesome project. I second the suggestion someone else had to use some "firecord" instead of the cheap woven nylon cord that Coghlan's sold it with. When I decided I wanted a lanyard on my bushcraft knife and ferro rod one of my very old-fashioned fellow scout leaders "made" me use static tech-cord (usually used for climbing) as it's rated to take a load. The idea is that if you ever find yourself in a bad situation and in need of a prussik for ascending, you can re-tie your lanyard cable and the carabiner you always keep attached to it into one. (for instance....) Personally, I've taken that bit of wisdom to heart and I tend to spend a little more on cord and rope nowadays and use the good stuff, even for all the little loops, bits and bobs, because I feel better with over-preparation rather than the opposite.

Nice Ferro rod and good idea to have glow in dark liners, would never have thought of that, but very good idea and practical. Putting those pins in the handle though spoilt the build. I made my last ferro rod handle by gluing the rod into a block of wood first then placing the ferro rod into a drill and turning the block like a faith, worked great. if I do another though I would glue a grass washer where the rod meets the handle so that when the rod wears out, you simply drill out the rod and replace.

With the epoxy holes being on symmetrical sides, you could cover those faces with thin veneers of a complimentary species and sand them back nearly flush. Would make a fairly easy and intentional-looking "fix" if it continues to bother you.
The sign of true craftsmanship isn't the skill to avoid the occasional snafu, but rather, the cleverness to conceal them efficiently.

Sometimes the most perfect art is that one that includes those imperfections. Like those waves that you watch from shore. Each one different. Some break, some don't, some split once, others in many locations, some louder than others but each and every one of those waves are perfect. YOU, are the creator of that art of that handle. Those pins exist on that handle because of you. Your creation is therefore perfect.
Thank you for bringing us the beauty that you make.

Hi. I am a certified European Adhesive Bonder, so I really enjoy watching people glueing materials, as it's often quite amusing.
As I noticed you have a very tidy way of working and a great ambition to do things right, here are a few tips to "build in the quality of a bond" :
    -use mainly acetone for cleaning
-most plastics should be cleaned with alcohol as acetone may harm them
-clean surfaces before and after you roughen them. Otherwise you tend to work greases and particles into the surface of the material
-metals like bras (CuSn) , Aluminium (Al) and Stainless steel (XCrNi/V2A/...)build up oxides pretty fast, so you want to clean, remove oxide, clean, roughen surface, aply adhesive immediately and fixate.
-a layer of adhesive epoxy shouln't be thicker than 0,1mm!
-forget about the "epoxy pins"! Thats not what adhesives are made for. The mechanical claws in the ferro rod are indeed necessary as the rod will not bond very well to any adhesive due to its molecular structure.
Hope this helps a little. Have fun and Rock on!

I followed your work and made a sheaf for an Australian Dewie Army knife, Made some blunders but have a functional set up. For the ferro rod holder (10mm rod) I used a piece of 1/2 inch marine ply. I'd love to get some pics of it to you since you inspired me to finally make a kit for my knife. So Thanks!

Love the Alec Steele reference. I have seen him restart so many projects. I love the work you do and it is what I aspire to.

I like the matching handle for the fero rod! I have used empty .30-30 shells for handles on 5/16 rods! Keep up the good work my friend.

Nice Job. Alec Steel would have probably used damascus. When you are cutting groves into the ferro rod, or anything, add a vertical one too. It helps eliminate the back pressure from the epoxy and makes it easier to seat it to the bottom and use the vise to gently push it into place, not a hammer. Thanks for posting the build.

Great job. I've got an original Ray Mears and a after market sheath that carries a Fire Steal and Sharpening Stone. Really great job.

I enjoy all your videos. They're relaxing and informative. You might consider calling this Knife shieth fire starter the "burning bush".
