Your knives are beautiful...great craftsmanship. I just made my first knife from an old rusty file as I do not have a forge. I made my own bevel jig which worked very well. The knife came out beautiful with a high polished blade that holds an edge very well. The handle is made of rosewood and the problem was drilling holes in the tang for pins. After much research I decided not to try and anneal the tang only so I could drill. Rather I decide not to use pins and epoxy the handle in place. I decided to use JB Weld and it worked exceptionally well. After shaping the handle and sanding I used the white polishing compound on a cotton buffer wheel and the handle came out beautifully polished. I am very pleased with my first ever knife making project. The only tools I used was my 4x36 belt sander, my bandsaw to cut the handle wood, a Dremel tool (the Dremel was awesome to work with..indispensible) and my drill press with a 4 inch buffer wheel. I gave the JB Weld a full day to cure and did not clamp it too tightly. It worked great and using it saved money I would have had to spend to anneal. My experiences might help your audience if they are new to knife making.
Hermoso cuchillo!! Y mejor aún que terminó en buenas manos!! Me encanta regalar objetos hechos por mi a personas que los merecen. Gran abrazo desde Argentina!
Hey Dustin I just wanted to let you know, that thanks to all you’re amazing videos I just finished crafting my very first knife!!! The process was so much fun and I can’t wait to start making more and work on even more project with your guidance! Thank you for all you do!
Thanks for the compliments. I’d love to see your knife. If you use Instagram, tag me in your post, otherwise, email me a pic to theartofcraftsmanship @gmail.com. Thanks again.
I wish I would have watched this video last week. I tried my first coke bottle handle Saturday and it didn't go so well. I'll give it a try this weekend again. Thanks for the video 👍
fantastic camera work and sound! love the background music as well, Very well done for the beginner knife maker and for those of us who have been doing it for 20 plus years!
Great work...I was able to make a handle out of old-growth walnut just like yours using only my hand-held belt sander in a vice. It was not easy and took a long time, but I surprised myself how well it turned out...A lot to be said for having the right tools and not doing work-arounds.
Wow the knife's beautiful and thank you for sharing this series with us .and thanks to your brother as well for the great camera work . you both make a good team . cheers.
Love the videos! I like seeing what someone can do at home instead of in a fancy shop full of dedicated tools. I noticed you have a sort of a drum sander for your drill press. Could we get a video on how you did that?
Awesome present! I like the O1-Steel also very much. For protect the blade we use Ballistol, not WD40. Do you have Ballistol in the US? Maybe you can collect all the grits you had used in working? Different grits for the handle and differents grit for the metallwork? Could be a nice „guideline“ for other builders! 😃 Keep on! Best Regards, Jan 🌳⛺️🌲
love the tranquil acoustic music to accompany some really good shots of what you are doing to achieve the final results... to be afraid to use 20 grit sometimes ; )
Well done, beautiful craftsmanship. Lucky camera man! I really enjoy you videos and the way you set up your camera angles, it show off your work nicely.
I love how your videos are less about the tools and shop space and more about the art and passion of creating. Your channel is an inspiration for craftsman of all disciplines. My most humble respects.
Awesome job brother - you cranked out one beautiful knife! I have been following it as you progressed and plan to do one myself perhaps this summer. Thanks for sharing the build!!!
I’ve got a good buddy who is a fairly well known knife maker. I can’t wait to make a knife and send him some pics. This has been a really good series, man. Thanks again. Also! It’s great to have a channel I can share with my young sons and not have to worry about you dropping F bombs every other word.
Hi Dustin!! Congratulations once again for this new and excellent work. How envious to have that knife. I am afraid to order one because I do not know the import laws in my country and maybe I could run out of it at customs, so I have to settle for seeing it in the hands of my favorite craftsmen. A very warm greeting.
Love the way you explain things on your videos. Quick question .what mask do you need for standing like this video? Thanks for your time and great job sure wish I could do that,it looks so fun!!!.
Great workmanship. Picked up some valuable tips. I have a stack of old 10 inch saw blades and I can't wait to turn them into beauties. Where do you order your scales from? Txs Tom
Great finish to this series!!! As I’ve said before, I love your craftsmanship. Also, your videography is fantastic. You put out an excellent product for guys like me seeking to learn. Question: As a new knife maker, what is the band saw you use and do you cut both metal and wood? Thanks, Dustin!
The boiled Linseed oil makes it really pop it out with the grain. Amazing job. Does the linseed oil make it stronger? Or stops splitting? Can you lacquer after? Or do you use lacquer instead? Any reply appreciated cheers from Australia just subbed and liked 🙂👍👍👍
Thanks for the kind words! The BLO is used as a finish to brighten and protect. The wood would dry out and crack if not oiled with something. I’m a fan of BLO, as well as a number of oil-wax products. I make my own 1-1 BLO/Beeswax mixture. The addition of a wax also helps to make a water barrier. I’ve never used lacquer so I can’t really help you out there. Sounds like an interesting thing to give a try.
@@TheArtofCraftsmanship I'm taking my time with the handle because I'm trying to juggle 3 things at once. I'm going to linseed the handle first. Then paint in clear epoxy resin. I'm are 2 sets just in case. Lol. Cheers and thanks again. 🙂👍👍👍
Hi I'm new too this and was just wondering what size brass rod you use for the pins please ? Also is it best to use a brass hammer to knock them in with? Many thanks jody.
That turned out realy well. But please do every carbon steel blade a favour and keep wd40 away from it, it will actualy rust it. Wd40 does not protect carbon steels. Its good to clean and loosen certain sticky things, but it actualy rusts carbon steels. (Its mostly made from water).Use mineral oil, its neutral colour and food safe. You can do the entir knife with it, and its cheaper.
Sad that noone actually peens there pins anymore, its how its been done for Hundreds of years, before epoxy was a thing. The epoxy should only be a backup to the actual peening of the pins.

Another great lookong knife. I really enjoy your videos and content.

😂😂😂. Who would have thought I would ever even get close to using 20 grit. Now I use a 36 regularly.
Found this by accident. Watched the whole build. Enjoyed every bit of that. Now, where do I get a shed and some tool steel.
Turned out beautiful as always, Just finishing up my first knife and already hooked and looking forward to making more. Thanks for the insperation
Thanks Allan. If you can, post some pics on Instagram with the #artofcraftsmanship tag. I’d love to see them.

Are you planning on doing a series where you also make a sheath for the knife? That would be sweet!
Yup. Next one😉
Really liked your video.
Wanted to know if one can make a knife using a rotary tool only.
Definitely. That’s how I made them when I started. Well that and a metal file.
if that pond is at your house, you're doing it right
Loved it. Thanks for the video. It's been great to follow your work. Needs a sheath now. :p
Definitely
Great job and video! Did you make the blade or can I buy some like it somewhere? Thanks!

Boa noite sou brasileiro vc ganhou um novo escrito nó seu canal. Parabéns vc trabalha muthio biene
Hey Dustin, great work. Which video to I go to see you make a handle with just hand tools?
I haven’t done one with just hand tools, but that’s not a bad idea. Thanks for the compliments.
Great vid! I’m new to the channel, I’m glad I found it! Do you have a website where you sell the knives you make? I’d get one for sure!
Great job. I love watching your channel. Who is playing the guitar. The music is great.
Thanks! My brother Devon, behind the camera, played and recorded all the music with a few musician friends.
Great workmanship. Picked up some valuable tips. I have a stack of old 10 inch saw blades and I can't wait to turn them into beauties. Where do you order your scales from? Txs Tom
That handle is beautiful! Mind if I ask where you got your 1x30 stropping belt? Do you use a compound on it?
Thanks! The stropping belt is an old 220 belt, flipped inside out. 😉 I use white polishing compound on it.
Nice. Bonus points for the extra craftiness.

I really like the music in this video, who's the guitarisr?
First comment 🙄🙄🇩🇿 good job...
nice job. It looks fabulous. What kind of wood did you use for the scales (looks like bocote to me)?
You got it!
What did you use to clean the sanding drum on your drill press?
It’s a sanding belt eraser.
What belt was you using to sharpen it?
How long/how many passes would you do on the leather strop
What oil did you use for the handle?
Boiled linseed oil
The boiled Linseed oil makes it really pop it out with the grain. Amazing job. Does the linseed oil make it stronger? Or stops splitting? Can you lacquer after? Or do you use lacquer instead? Any reply appreciated cheers from Australia just subbed and liked 🙂👍👍👍

hey Dustin! just wondering what grinder you use to grind your bevels?
I have a older model 1 HP Sear/Craftsman 2x42. It’s a great machine.
Hi I'm new too this and was just wondering what size brass rod you use for the pins please ? Also is it best to use a brass hammer to knock them in with? Many thanks jody.
What oil do you use on a resin handle?
I’m not sure about that. Might not need any oil, just buff it to a shine, since oil’s purpose is to keep the handle from drying out.
Do you ever sell any of the knives you make?
I noticed the superstition at the end. He paid you for the knife. May the knife last for generations.
I want one how much
Great camera work. Most would be too afraid to show their work that close.
We try and get you right up close. Good or bad. Thanks for watching!
Did you say you used Murphys Oil?
Boiled linseed oil.
Peening is fine but you have to be extra careful so you don't split the handle...I prefer epoxy
do you have any new videos?
