This just produced a memory from 2006. I was in bed during a week or so of depression. My then 7 year-old daughter knocks on the bedroom door. I considered pretending to be asleep as I was ashamed of being seen by her like that. Anyway, I can't remember if I answered but she comes in with drawing of a flower or a tree I think and says she drew it for me. I'm trying not to well up as she tells me she loves me and wraps her arms around my neck while snuggling into me. I tell her I love her too, just about managing to form the words with my eyes brimming. She then climbs off the bed and gently closes the door. I barely hear her tiptoe away. I sobbed at how much my heart ached due to the thought of being less of a father than she deserved! I'm just about holding it together as I write this! 😭
I hope you have healed from your dark state mate it's not an easy journey through this life but there are lots of things to keep you going just like this beautiful moment and many more when you can keep going. Best wishes and keep strong.
A guy used to sing all Grays songs in a VIP area of a club in Accrington, Piano and all..... He was superb! My wife and I found the place after we decided to give our 7yr marriage another go. Divorce cancelled..... We celebrated our 25th silver wedding anniversary last October. Thanks in part to you Mr Gray 👍
years ago when I broke up with my partner at the tender age of 17 I listened to this album heartbroken. we got back together had 16 wonderful years a son together a dog together and he went and died on me! so now I am listening to this again with what I now know to be a true broken heart. 💔💔

I heard this song at a pub when I’d taken myself on a trip to think about my marriage. This song came on as soon as I walked in and I knew they tune but didn’t really pay attention to the words but I knew it was speaking to me. So I tried to find it later when I got back to my hotel but couldn’t remember any of the words so only had the tune in my head. So I prayed to God that he’d help me find the name of this song. On the last night of my stay I went back to that pub and I met a girl there who I had a drink with and we talked for ages about our lives and she said she loved music so I hummed her the tune and she said that’s David gray so I looked him up on TH-cam and it was this song! Then I went back to my hotel and really listened to the words and it was as if God led me to this song to give me hope that my marriage would survive. Thank you God and David for writing this beautiful and powerful song. I have hope again
This too was I when I looked at my daughter in her hospital crib!! For the first time that we were introduced formally!! I just watched her for hours even though I was so so tiered from bringing her into this world.
I played this album non stop when I was at home with two beautiful children and realised I was trapped in a toxic marriage it saw me through the hardest of times .
If being trapped in a 'toxic' marriage is a price you must pay to raise kids in a two-parent household, then you do that. You're the one who picked the man. You make the best of it until those kids are raised.
@Skindoggiedog yeah then those kids are raised seeing a toxic relationship believing its normal, thats what love looks like! Thee shittest advice I think I've ever read 🤦♀️
Had a midlife crisis at 33 yrs old. it's time to slow down a bit for me. I hope everyone can gracefully transition into older age so they don't have to crack, break and be rebuild like I did. Mental break downs are very difficult but we can always look to Jesus on the other side of life waiting to keep us.
What gets me about this song is that it’s full of joy but also desperate pain. It feels like it’s about someone he adores but knows in the end he can’t have - ‘I’ve got half a mind to die, so I won’t ever have to lose you, won’t ever have to say goodbye...’
I think those drum fills are pretty complex. In fact, part of what I love so much about this song is the complex and almost manic drums in comparison with apologetic, slower, and simple melody sung by David Gray. Being born in 98’, I grew up listening to Gray in the car on cassette. I admire them days fondly the music clearly hasn’t aged and is not defined by time. Timeless classic x
scrubs didn't bring me here. What brought me here is that when I was a child me and my father would drive miles on end up to London because my mother left my father, he used to listen to David Gray a lot because it reminded him of her. That's what brought me here, the love my father has for my mother, just so you know they're together now and have been for 18 happy years.

Junior year in college, I studied abroad in Spain. This album was the soundtrack to my time there. Whenever I put on White Ladder, I'm flooded with nothing but great memories. Thank you David, not only for this amazing album, but decades of great music. You are loved, and appreciated by so many!

Love the lyric, "feels like lightning runnin through my veins." When you sing @ me that way....Strongest male lyricist I ever heard. Gray is still the best....especially love the musical stanza deep into that mystery...he is so good to listen to, it almost hurts sometimes from the beauty he sings...

How does a person like me, just Mr average, possibly find the accurate, appropriate or even the adequate words to describe my decades long admiration and unabashed devotion to the words, melodies and music of St David Gray? How do I describe "just how good it feels" to listen to him sing so many of his outstanding songs? The bloke not only breaks my heart but he mends it - time and time again. He confronts me - calling me forward to do better. To love deeper. To let go and let be. To forgive and embrace and include. He offers absolution and reconciliation. I've never once been tempted to put him up on a pedestal and falsely worship him as a Rock God. David is far too human to tempt me into that delusion. I've wept with him as much as I've laughed And celebrated with him. What a wonder he (and his family, his army, of musicians) are to me. Album after album of brilliance. I have no doubt Jesus himself is a fan of the man. I simply can't thank him enough. What a delight! What a treasure. What a gift! What a friend. I tip my hat Sir to the God who made you and sent you into our broken, hurting, beautiful falling world. You heal it as you sing. You soothe it as we swoon................. I am humbled to call myself a fan.
His line in the song "feels like lightning running through my veins" is one of my favorite lyrics in all of music ever. And majority of us have to sift through dating and relationships for awhile sometime years, but when you have found that right person whether they are still alive or they passed away, you feel like lightning running through your veins when your with them. Can't describe it any better than Mr.Gray did here.
The only David Gray album I've bought......this song hit me hard.... absolutely class album and this one the best of them all.... Fcking I just realized this makes me old ffs
Only 1 person on my mind when I hear this song. I don’t deserve your forgiveness no matter how much time goes on, but just know I really am sorry and would change everything if I could. You’re always on my mind !

I tip my hat Sir to the God who made you and sent you into our broken, hurting, beautiful falling world. You heal it as you sing. You soothe it as we swoon................. I am humbled to call myself a fan.
Memories with my dad as a kid driving along listening to David gray albums everytime I hear his songs shivers go through me
likewise brother. let me guess youre in your early 30s... ?
Loved it when it was out and listening in 2021 with a big smile on my face
Those hand claps that start from 2.51 are everything
David, you are wonderful. You heal my heart whenever I listen to you. Thank you.
Great song from a great bloke
“Throw a stone and watch the ripples flow, moving out across the bay”
Gets me every time that line.
This is one of my favourite songs ever written . Reminds me of my Dad picking me up from work in 2000 , he passed away 2001.
Always remembered x

A true love song.
Can't believe this song is 20 years old !!!
David Gray was so underrated in 90s early 2000s what a voice man.....
He was a legend in Ireland at that time
This song reminds me of my dad, just like all David Gray songs.
This song never gets old; I'm happy I still have the CD. I love his voice, the lyrics.
David grey class singer
What a tune
What can I say it's a classic
I never tire of this song. Must be Love!
I listen to your Cd with this on so many times, and often when I'm driving in my car. You are a beautiful songwriter and singer.

Fcking I just realized this makes me old ffs
Only 1 person on my mind when I hear this song. I don’t deserve your forgiveness no matter how much time goes on, but just know I really am sorry and would change everything if I could. You’re always on my mind !
COME ON DAVE WERE YOU HIDING THESE DAYS YOUR VOICE IS BEAUTIFUL AN SO ARE YOU.
This song reminds me of being 15 and feeling overwhelmed by life. I'm now 27 and still feeling overwhelmed by life. Some things never change.
Same I'm just two years younger , this song screams early 2011 & being 13 for me
I’m 34 mate and still feel like that. It doesn’t change.
