Ben Linus original didn't was planed as a main character, but ABC was so happy with his performance they made out of him a full time role.
Jack also wasn't meant to be a role over six seasons. Original being played by Michael Keaton and being killed by the Monster after the Pilot episode. Kate sholud be the leader and main character, but because Lilly is canadian, it wasn't even clear if she could work outside of canada. So Jack became the main role of LOST.

Holy hell. I liked it but I couldn’t watch it again, it’s very long and gets quite repetitive. After seeing this, I checked out the whole podcast episode. Excellent work, you really got Michael Emerson to go into places I didn't expect him to in an interview. I found what he said about his father's passing and the play he did around that time really touching. I believe the show he did that caused him to set aside dealing with the grief was Person of Interest, and it just feels terrible that the character he played in POI lost his father to Alzheimer's. I can imagine it being an emotional rollercoaster for him.

Glad you checked out the podcast! And I really appreciate your feedback. I have to say, Michael is one of my favorite interviewees. He was totally open to talking in a way that was honest, thoughtful and real. I think you're spot-on. We both felt emotional when he talked about his father. Nice to know it came through to you too. It's interesting to think about him playing Harold Finch on POI knowing that may have been going on at the time. Very insightful feedback -- thank you.

Michael’s opinion on the mysteries matches mine COMPLETELY! Trying to find explanations to all the mysteries isn’t the right way to handle the show, when it’s the characters’ journeys that matter the most. seems to me that the way he just acts without creating a backstory for the character is the very motivation why his character is so hard to grasp and to understand what he's up to. he just stays in the moment, in the scene, so there is nothing that gives things away

The character of Ben was the first time I had seen Michael act. I absolutely loathe that character. However, the sign of a great actor, 4 me at least, is when the actor can make u feel sorry for him, when he’s being harmed, when 4 months u wanted 2 strangle him. Michael did this for me when he played Ben. So much so, I was so excited to c that he was back on tv w/ playing another character on “Person of Interest”. I absolutely LOVED that show bc of of Michael & Jim, 2 extremely talented actors.

I bet we will see a reimagined version someday. Shows like battlestar galactica have a certain time cycle, even if its 20-30 years. The stories were SO compelling. They will love seeing current or undiscovered actors in these parts, even if its hard to imagine now. Theres Hurley's time as island protector. Theres an endless need for new protectors and candidates. Any protector gets tired of being immortal after 2000 years. It was an honor and a privilege to watch this amazing show. There were stories like Eko & Walt that were changed due to circumstances with the actors that can still be explored too. If the creators are still around, they can still be consulted an interviewed, and may have new ideas. Im still sad sun, jin, sayid, and jack had to die, but happy endings are not in vogue anymore.

Obviously, any given viewer is completely allowed to dislike something they watch, including the ending of a major TV show. Having said that, in all my experience within the fan community over the years, well over 50% of those people who "hated" the LOST ending (particularly in a visceral way), when I hear their explanation why, that opinion is born out of objectively incorrect information. Something they've come to believe that is simply factually wrong. The show actually answered a huge majority of the "mysteries", there's plenty they quite literally spell out to the audience (even perhaps to the detriment of serving its dramatic purpose). You can not like WHAT the answer to something was, but to say it wasn't given at all is just not true. And yeah, a good bit of those answers still took lots of contemplation on the audience's part, but I'm a friggin idiot, if I understood it, trust me anyone could lol

I still laugh at how, during the final season, the folks who had been on the island became aware of their time on the island when they experienced some kind of "love connection", but for Ben Linus, it happened when he was getting the tar beat out of him!

There was nothing wrong with the ending of Lost. Certainly nothing that made watching six seasons a waste of time. The writing was brilliant, and fans really love these characters more than should be possible for a TV show. The connections, the set-ups and pay-offs between characters and episodes and seasons are such a rich, intricate tapestry, you could spend two decades unraveling it all. Lost is one of the greatest television shows ever made. A perfect storm of talented artists. The most beautiful soundtrack ever put to a series. Flawed, for sure, but lightning in a bottle.

I like your analysis, Leon. I simply loved Lost at the time. I'm ok with the ending. I do wish certain questions were answered and I do wish the sci-fi elements were toned down (personal preference), but it was undoubtedly a stellar show. Loved it!

Husband and I just finished watching Lost last night. Neither of us had watched it when it originally aired. I was Hooked by the first episode, and so did my husband who hates all Series. I loved the ending. "Ben" got beat up so many times! More than any character? While he didn't go into the Church at the end, he had "some things to work out", and that was appropriate, in my opinion. Michael, I loved you in Person of Interest. It was a series that wasn't given the recognition it deserved and why Taraji P. Henson doesn't seem to be mentioned (in interviews and articles) for her role it it. Sad.
    Thanks for this video.

Its nice of him to characterize his offhand mention that Benjamin was the leader of the Others as something the writers were planning from the start. They clearly just took his suggestion and ran with it because, with the benefit of hindsight, they had no idea where they were going. They owe him a writing credit.

13:55 I love that so much lol.
    Exactly how I feel lol
I think people who hate lost hated it for not understanding it and that can be fixed by explaining not just the show to them but the philosophy that drives the show. Their minds could be changed.
But I agree it would take a little bit of time.
Best summery I’ve seen is 5 and a half hours long. Lol
But it’s not the worst way to waste your time.
The enrichment Lost can bring to you when you get what it’s going for and accept/appreciate it for what it is, that’s worth the time and effort.

Michael Emerson, as first Henry Gale, then Benjamin Linus in my opinion was the best actor on Lost. had Anthony Hopkins not been able to play the role of Hannibal Lechter, Michael could have. Lost is my all time favorite. i found it to be the perfect combination of ALL genres. sci-fi, drama, romance, and even some comedic moments. as a fan, if i was to see any of the cast members out in public nothing would thrill me more than to talk to them. but i'd be hesitant to approach them for the following reasons. maybe they don't wanna be bothered, and if i approached them they could be offended by the invasion of privacy and i can respect that. to say something Ben Linus might say, i'd want them to want to talk to me. also, and this might seem extreme, i've heard many stories where big name actors that played characters that were supposed to be nice, when approached by fans were anything BUT nice. in fact sometimes downright abusive. if this were to happen it would ruin my whole perception of them and the show. So, at the end of the day, unless they initiated contact with me, as hard as it may be I'd be inclined to acknowledge them then just leave them alone. at the very least i could tell my friends and family hey i got to see that person in real life and in my opinion that's a win in and of itself

I’m happy to say I can vouch for Michael in real life. He’s one of the nicest, most thoughtful people. A little reserved, maybe - so I’m not sure how he feels about being approached on the street - but something tells me he’d be very gracious and wouldn’t disappoint.
