I found one out by a creek, somehow it found its way into my older sisters bed... since then i have run into them quite often. Some are grimpy and bite me 30 times others are laid-back and just check out the area from its elevated location in my hands. Pretty cool snakes.
I kept Slim for over 10 years. I caught her (northern California) and discovered she was a she when I came home one day and there were 20-30 babies running around the tank. I released them where I had caught her and she became my pet. She would lay on my stomach and soak up my heat until she would eventually get down looking for those fish she loved to eat. If I left the lid off her tank and stayed close she would leave the tank and come to me looking for fish. And she recognized me as she wouldn't go to my wife. Probably by smell. The most mellow snake I ever had. I did have a common California king snake that was pretty dang mellow.
I had caught a young western garter snake in 69. I was around 11 yrs old. I had that snake until after I was married and had kids. It eventually died in the mid 80s. 14 yrs I had that snake from childhood to adulthood. Fed it worms in the summer and minnows in the winter. That snake was also mellow laying on my stomach where it was warm. When I would hold him and rub the back of his head and neck I could put him to sleep. He ended up blind for the last few yrs of his life but I always finger fed him and still did even till the end. I also had a couple of ribbon snakes at the same time with this one as a kid. They had babies , only 5 though. I didn't know what to feed them they were so small. I tried but eventually they died and right after they died so did their parents. They mated in captivity. It was sad cause I had had them for a few yrs.
To me they superficially look like infant rattlesnakes but without the rattle, in terms of their scaling and coloration. But I'd be more worried about their bite and possible infection, and their skunk-like noxious emission. They are kind of cute though, as far as snakes go. I'm not a snake person, obviously.
Yes, Garter snakes are mildly venomous. I remember as a kid catching one. It crapped all over my arm then bit me a number of times. I shot it full of BB's in retaliation lol. It left minor cuts on my arm which itched after awhile. Their saliva is only mildly venomous to humans unless one is allergic to them. Garter snakes are related to the Cobra family.
I always hold them behind their heads so they cant bite me but i do give the rest of their bodies support but avoid their buts so they don't Musk/Poop on my ( its a defensive thing they do idk) Also I love your channel (:
I been bite a bunch of times and let me tell you what sometimes those bites get wicked infected with puss. I love them after they bite and poop and you they chill out and become your buddy.
No joke! I have a coy and goldfish pond. With some floating netting so my dogs stay out. About a week ago, by chance, I walked over to look at them and one of the goldfish was caught in the net and a big garter snake had the fishs face in its mouth. I saved the fish but was astonished. I didnt know snakes would go after them.
i dont mind snakes but i just killed a couple that were in my back yard i live in a very residential area in ohio and i hate all snakes even non venomous sadly in my small town there's no one who would come an get them so i had to rid my yard of them sadly
I know it's not a garter snek, but, long ago, when I was about 16 or so, I went on a week long camp out. On my return home, my mom was going through my backpack, and discovered that I had a hitchhiker. Yep! Unbeknownst to me a 2foot long ring neck snek got into my backpack, probably when I leaned it against a tree while breaking down our tent. Ype! It sure scared the daylights out of her. Could hear her a mile down the road.
Well recent findings confirmed that garter snakes have venom. It's just that their venom is a mild neurotoxin and only used to catch their prey. Their fangs are at the back of their mouth.
@@pinpointwildlife7202 - Several snake sites claim they are poisonous, not venomous. Thye do not inject venom but due to the toxins in their bodies from their prey, they are poisonous to anyone who eats one. The infection from their bites is from bacteria, germs, and other nasty stuff in their mouths. As such, when news articles talk about "poisonous" snakes, there actually are some - garter snakes.
I live in Florida, so I have the pretty blue noodles. I made a couple of frog ponds, and they come to get a snack every so often.
That's awesome!

When I was a child I let a garter snake bite my nipple to establish myself as a cool kid.
💀💀

@@Bitterstone3849 I miss that snake. She was great. Sigh.
So eating a poisonous toad or newt for these snakes is equivalent to eating rotten flesh on minecraft
I have been catching garter snakes since i was 4 years old. They were my friends.
You forgot to mention that they like to poop on you when you catch them. Just their self defense to get away from predators.

that viewer count is pleasant to see

Do they ever literally get tangled up in those dens?
I'm not sure 😂
Awesome video, I remember catching garter snakes all the time as a kid in the north east.
I love catching Striped Garden Noodles

Terrific video!
OMG SO CUTE
Nope. This snake is completely harmless. The only way it's a nuisance is if you have a goldfish pond because they will come there for dinner.

Nothing about the terrible stench they leave on your hands?! You cant get it off them for days!
Truuuuueee
Fun fact the reptile equivalent of hibernation is called brumation.
This needs an Uncle Ben quote: “Look at this precious creature…”
The TH-camr, not the snake. But the snake’s cute, too.
I like that 😂
I love snakes, and I require to subscribe to you
I was waiting for you to mention their self-defense strategy, 😆
They emit foul odor in their anal glands to deter their would be predator.
My friend caught one

True but technically I didn't lie they are venomous
