    I've been watching this channel for years and got to put my snake knowledge to use today. I was at a family dinner for my aunt who passed away last week and one of the kids found a snake in the dining hall. It's a very small garter snake. Yesterday it was 80 degrees, today it SNOWED. It's too cold to release him outside so I set him up in a temporary enclosure in my spare bathroom so I can keep him safe until it's warm enough for him to go back outside. It's been a trip and I searched up this video to refresh my memory on keeping him safe for a couple of days.

      @@HandyDandy6I did not let him go. For two reasons: 1. It took over two weeks for the temperature to get back up to a good range to let him go. 2. I got attached.
      His name is Noodleman (my husband named him) and he currently resides in a 55 gallon tank. He eats every few days, has shed five times, and poops constantly lol

    Thanks so much for the video! My garter snake recently-ish (a few months ago) gave birth, so this'll be helpful in the future in case of more litters! Sadly, all of her litter that we didn't let go (because she is a rescue) died recently as well. FOR EVERYONE HERE, you should know that there is a 90% mortality rate for the babies, even for captive ones. About the UVB, my snake LOVES going up there to bask. So... idk. Anyways, stay safe everyone!

    • @o0Theresa0o
      @o0Theresa0o 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Your mortality rate is inaccurate - it shouldn't be that high. It's possible you have a snake that didn't produce good offspring, but it might be worth checking to see if anything else might be going on.

    I LOVE Garter snakes! I recently found a young snake basking in a cemetery and picked it up. It promptly sprayed musk all over me! (ick). I carried it about and it settled down in my warm hands as it was a cold day. I brought it back to my farm, which is away from roads (the cemetery was right next to a busy road) and released it near my barn. I later saw it with an obvious mouse bump in the middle which is just what I was hoping for! I would love to get some domestically bred Garters to keep as pets! They are so colorful compared to the native Garters were have here in Northern Maine!

    When I was a little kid (many decades ago because I’m pretty old) I thought my mom called them “garden snakes”. It was a logical name because they lived in our yard. It wasn’t until I was about 10 that I learned that they were actually “garter snakes”. You can imagine my disappointment.

    • @dorabrooks76
      @dorabrooks76 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I thought the same! 🤣 Then I _again_ misheard, and thought they were called guarder snakes- because they patrol the yard as if guarding it. Hahaha! I'm embarrassed to admit that I was well into my teens before I realized my mistake! 😶😅
      In my defense, the local nickname for them is either red or yellow racer, depending on the colour of the snake's dorsal stripe, so I didn't hear their proper common name very often. I'm really not sure where that name came from, considering we don't even have Racer snakes here, and the species of Racers that have a range nearest to us have solid colouring and smooth (not keeled) scales... Maybe it's simply because of how fast garters are. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I always felt lucky to even _see_ a garter snake because of their speed. Never could catch one. 😊

    This is why we love Ed.
    I gotta ask though: can you do a video like this on Burmese pythons? That's if you haven't already
    I'm really curious about the husbandry of such a giant snake compared to much smaller species; especially when it's a snake that can outgrow a room, let alone an enclosure. Also need to eat big meals, and not just large, large rats but rabbits, Guinea pigs, maybe baby pigs or sheep even, and how often they have to be fed

      I'd love to see this video too!! :)
      (that said, I kinda... I have to point out that sheep and rats are not EVEN on the same size scale lol . An adult sheep is probably over 200 lbs! a lamb.... well, a 6 month old lamb is about 140 lbs... while a burmese CAN eat a sheep, that is NOT going to be part of their typical husbandry. Sheep are pregnant for about 5 months, and while they CAN have 4 babies at once, 1 or 2 is way more common. A rabbit, on the other hand, have an *average* of 6 kits... and can become pregnant at 12 weeks old. -- one is a lot more sustainable than another! :)
      There is also the fact that feeding a huge prey item, even dead (though really, can you imagin putting a 200 lb sheep on a pair of tongs? lol) risks physically damaging the snake.
      A baby pig is about 2.5lbs when born. about 5lbs a week later.... and grow very quickly. (adult pigs have a really big range of sizes. Usually between 300 and 700 lbs, but domestic piggies are bred to be even bigger! the record holder weight 1600 lbs. WILD pigs also have a big range of weight and size. I'm mentioning this, because so many people think pigs are these little cute pink oinkers, but they are usually monsterously big, and were one of the most feared animals in medival times for a reason :D Anyway, they have about 12 piglets about twice a year, so baby pigs could be a more reasonable food item.
      however, pigs are also really clever animals, so I think I'd feel bad feeding pigs--that said, I beleive they tend to have a... well, when a baby is 2.5lbs and mom is 400lbs, has hooves and is not an animal built for dexterity.... accidents happen. so it might be a good, if irregular, food source.

    • @alexbenavidez4500
      @alexbenavidez4500 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jenetikitty Yeah, it's why I want to know about the feeding for their Burm, because I know of all those things being fed to a burn, not necessarily there's at one point
      They get their Guinea pigs and rabbits that passed away naturally from breeders
      Sheep and pigs are huge, huge meals, but I know of dead newborns from a farm being fed to real big snakes
      Emily and Ed had a ton of turkeys gifted to them, but I don't know if they've finished the lot yet
      They have also mentioned in the past that food doesn't always have to be the same consistent size for each feeding, because in the wild its not always the cas. Could also be the reason why some snakes go off food occasionally, because there are months where they'll naturally have no food at all and have adapted to survive

    I appreciate the disclaimer about not anthropomorphizing the snakes when their buddy dies
    It's kinda hard to explain why it'd affect them so much
    With a quantity over quality life, living in numbers does assure more safety from other predators, because when in groups; like say a group of five, and a predator comes along, there's only a one in five chance that they'll be the snake predated on, which is far better odds than trying to get away from a predator on their own
    You can also argue that more snakes mean more lookouts for predators or food, and that's why they're so curious and inquisitive, exploring everything. They have a safety net that allows them to forage and explore more, with less threat of predators
    When they're on their own, they probably don't feel as secure, and likely can't just slither and forage around anymore because it's far riskier without the safety in numbers
    That stress and inability to function is possibly what does them in. That's not to say they can never survive happily on their own. There are likely some garters who don't mind, but as demonstrated on this channel, when a single unhappy garter is placed in a group, they calm down and perk up from the positive reaction of being safely in a group
    On their own, they're likely scared and confused and unable to live safely as they were before in numbers, so they simply can't survive like that
    Kinda reminds me of shoaling and schooling fish as well

    • @TheDJYosh
      @TheDJYosh 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's true that they got where they are differently but all social animals break down a similar way. Humans stuck together because it's safer and provides less stress, and it negatively affects us after we're bonded.
      Garter snakes get their by a slightly different path but it's a fundamental part of human nature so you can't help but sympathize anyway.
