When I get my 4runner one of the things I wanted to do was put in a sound system. So, upgrade speakers is a definite. But I'd also want to run an Amp, new head unit & a Sub woofer.
I went with the Pioneer 10.1” display because it can be moved down further to allow for full air vent clearance and fast wireless CarPlay. It’s a bit more expensive, but it’s been incredible so far.
Great vid as usual. Definitely want to upgraded my head unit in my Tundra and have been thinking about this one. Only downside for me is now wireless features. Thanks for sharing and look forward to the update vids.

Kinda mentioned all that in the video. You use the mic that comes with the unit, the gps does not plug into this unit so you use your phone for navigation, aux I need to check, but this has bluetooth carplay, and android auto, so aux is kinda obsolete. USB music should work still
Hey Jon! Great video! What do you think of the Sony AX7000?? It’s not as big of a screen as yours, but it has a amp built in. Only thing I worry about is that and yours were built around the same time. I worry that Apple CarPlay will get outdated or that the UI will start getting slow. How is the response on yours? Any lag?

Great video. I have the exact same head unit. I purchased my from Trail Grid Pro as well. I absolutely love mine. I purchased mine last summer 2021. My 4Runner is a 2016 and unfortunately it didn’t have Apple CarPlay. I actually mounted my microphone with the clip that was provided. It clips perfectly above the steering column on the instrument panel trim. In one of their videos they show you where to mount it. Thanks for all of the cool videos. Ryann

Yeah...perfect...blocks the air vents nicely. Oh....and ugly mounting hardware in view behind it. I recommend staying with the stock head unit and getting a good DSP to actively control multiple channels. Helix, JL Audio, Audio Control, Audison, etc.
Are you having issues with yours? No matter what I try I get major screen lag at times when I’m on a call with an iPhone 12 and my wife’s 13 pro. I also get audio crackling at times but both phones work perfectly and buttery smooth on CarPlay with my wife’s 2021 Mercedes’ GLE 350. I’ve swapped out cables, restarted phones, firmware update on head unit, direct plugin to head unit. Guys at Trailgrid are great but probably going to replace this one with something else. Also, the mic is terrible but I think that’s the case with most aftermarket units.
What about those of us that have a front facing camera installed? Is there room for that? Also, I have a mount for my iPhone that has a wireless charger built in. I wonder if that would count for “wired” CarPlay? Thanks!!

I was talking to a guy that installs a lot of camera systems and he was asking me what the stock resolution was on the head unit. Do you know? Spoke to Toyota Brand today about the 22 TRD Pro camera quality, they said they are aware but no fix at this time, rep did say the more complaints possibly a fix to come, get the word out if ya can 😉

If Apply Car Play is your only goal, u can achieve it much cheaper with the Beat Sonics mod

I have the Sony 8000 & am not particularly thrilled with it. After 6 months the text reading feature stopped working & if I hit a bump the plugged in phone disconnects. Incredibly annoying

where is a head unit with trail camera's for off roaders. I wish one of these mainstream head unit makers would give us an aftermarket 360 trail camera system like some of the new 4x4s have and obd integration to run apps like torque. also, I'm not a fan of the way that screen looks in there. definitely doesn't look factory. I'd rather have a bit smaller screen and no big gap. it looks like it's a tablet mag mounted to the factory stereo, which you might as well have done since a modern tablet is light years ahead of that display. I think Sony would be better off making hardware that would integrate a tablet into a vehicles wiring (stereo/obd/multiple camera inputs and more) instead of making their own screen. then they could just make an app for the tablet and a tablet mount that lets you remove the tablet easily for security. there was a time when the aftermarket made better head units than the factory but not really anymore. almost every aftermarket stereo these days is junk. i'm not sure that all of the once great brands like alpine/sony/pioneer/kenwood/nakamichi aren't all made by the same company. they all sold out just like all the great bicycle companies of the 80's btw, love your reviews on the new tundra
To be clear Apple CarPlay only works when plugged in via usb- not via Bluetooth? For the price feel like it should be Bluetooth. 😕 Would like to see what functions with Bluetooth - say if using Spotify on the phone-
Only wired carplay. The unit itself is like 650. It would be nice if Sony made it wireless. But for the $ for the bundle with everything, that’s pretty hard to beat imo. But I do with is was wireless.

I put the Alpine Halo 9 in our 4R. Such an improvement over the stock stereo. I took out the factory mic and mounted the Alpine mic in it's place.

You don’t see the hardware unless you’re looking for it. And if you watch my update video there are zero issues with the vents

Camera was mentioned in the video, yes it works for that. For carplay to work the phone needs to be plugged in
