  • In today’s episode we are reviewing the Ultra-gauge Blue wireless unit and comparing the functionality with the MX1.4 wired unit.
    I have already released a video speaking in depth about the MX1.4 unit, how to install and some of the real world results I achieved. This video can be found here: • LANDCRUISER 200 | Ultr...
    Today we specifically look at the Blue unit and compare some of the differences. In my time with the unit I observed several differences, both pro’s and con’s for each. I believe that each unit will suit a specific driver depending on the use of the vehicle.
    These units can really be a life saver, particularly when travelling remote areas of Australia, where a simple engine light can stop your vehicle. These units not only monitor important data the factory can’t display, but can read and diagnose electronic faults and have the ability to clear fault codes so you can get back on your way.
    I hope this video is able to provide some useful information for those who are considering purchasing a OBDII gauge and has assisted you in making a decision for which unit might be right for you.
    Again, I would like to thank Peter Coppin for lending me his personal Ultragauge Blue unit for testing in this episode.

    What's cool about the Blue is, although it lags slightly (if that's an issue you probably need to not go bluetooth), you can buy a cheap Samsung tablet and have an amazing readout. The only thing I like about the hardwire is you don't have to mess around with connecting. I have to reconnect whenever I want to use the Blue. If I needed and wanted it on all the time, I'd go with a hardwire setup. I may buy the EM/MX just to have it on all the time and use the Blue for custom applications.
    The blue also has the ability to map out your performance on a track...incredible for such a cheap unit harnessing the power of a smartphone.

    I prefer the Ultragauge as its set and forget, it also keeps the temptation to play with my mobile at bay (while driving). It's a pity Ultragauge doesn't have a bargraph option in its setup. The main things I miss are OTA software upgrades and the lack of logging on the Ultragauge, though to date its been faultless and fit for purpose. Have used Torque before and do like the analogue gauges, my main concern would be screen-burn after a period of use if you're using a good phone.

      For sure, its great to have the options available, however the MX1.4 is still the option for me.

    Yes great review 😊👍 I bought the 1.4 although I was bummed when I see the nice display of the blue but if you go up to high elevations with performance gauges doing Twisties roads spirited driving and no cell signal the blue would be useless ...

    • @XploringOz
      @XploringOz  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      For sure, compromises either way. I'm still very happy with the 1.4 unit and would probably purchase again if I had my time over.

    Been using the blue for years only to have the iOS no longer supported. I’ve been looking to see if any recent android updates to see if it’s worth getting a cheap android tablet vs buying a new odb2 reader.

    I own the BT model & altho it is a neat little tech toy it doesnt give me what i want in my motorhome.
    What i want to see-
    engine oil psi
    engine oil temp
    trans temp
    coolant temp
    diff temp
    volts
    exhaust temp
    I think what I am going to have to do is go old school & build me a gauge panel 3" high X 20" wide
    that I can park on top of my dash gauge cluster. (yeah, its a cluster alright...)
    which will hold seven 2 1/8" round autometer electric gauges.
    I'll keep the blue & use it as a trip computer tracking mileage-travel time-fuel use & such.

      For sure, there are many more values that need monitoring, however we do need to keep in mind that this unit can only detect sensors that are supplied from factory and wired through the vehicles ECU. Other, more specified gauges will need to be individually added, or programmed through aftermarket software 👍

    Hi Nathan, thanks for your nice review. Not changing vehicles the MX 1.4 is for me the winner and most useful unit powering the mobile where is no reception seems a bit odd.
    PS we are still after the Info how to setup 2 EGT probes via the obdII to the ultra gauge! That would be a ripper and complete all our needs for info while driving. Maybe we are lucky and someone has figured it out and like to share. Thanks and keep the sunny side up. Cheers

    • @XploringOz
      @XploringOz  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks mate, for sure. I still prefer the convenience and the practicality of the MX1.4 unit, but the Blue unit definitely has a target audience, especially for those who frequently change vehicles.
      Yeah, still haven't heard or managed to work out how to get dual EGT's on this model yet...

    So if you had one of these just to monitor battery health for weekends away with family (not drain it down so you end up stranded) would that replace the need for a dedicated battery monitor ?

    • @XploringOz
      @XploringOz  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey mate, yes you could monitor the battery through this gauge, but there are limitations. For example you wouldn't be able to monitor anymore than just the voltage of the battery and further, it would only display when the vehicle is turned on.
      Personally I use a couple of other methods, in the front of the vehicle I use a basic switch blank monitor that is wired to constant power, meaning that with a quick glance at any time I can get the vehicle voltage for both batteries. ebay.us/U3MDUW
      Further, for a more detailed analysis, I use a Victron Battery monitor that also connects via Bluetooth. This will give me the battery level and health in terms of state and depth of charge as well: ebay.us/bxelPj
      Hope this helps, cheers.

    How do you find out what gauges area available for your vehicle? The website says, "There is no guarantee that all the pre-programmed parameters will work with your year, make and model vehicle. Those that are not supported by your vehicle will show 'Err:.' " I'd like to know what I can display before getting one.
    I thought I'd email them directly at the Australian website using info@ultragaugeaustralia.com.au and got back almost instantly: "Your message wasn't delivered to info@ultragaugeaustralia.com.au because the address couldn't be found, or is unable to receive mail." Looks like I better give them a ring when the shop opens...
    I'm currently using Torque Pro for my Colorado on my Android phone. Cost less than $10 from memory. I had to buy a decent OBD2 wi-fi scanner (Vgate) for $35. Still, I'm curious about how much more information is available with the Ultragauge.
