Violent Night was one of my top films of last year. I plan on adding to my must watch Christmas time movies list. Currently my list is Muppets Christmas Carol, Mickey's Christmas Carol, Santa's Slay, Elf, and on Christmas day I must watch Ernest Saves Christmas.
In an interview, Eli Roth said the vibe he was going for with "Thanksgiving" is a modern remake of a lost cult slasher flick that was banned and all copies are gone with the only surviving footage being the trailer
@@mattneffI completely agree. It should’ve been set in the 70s with gritty cinematography, but it would’ve cost more because of it. The budget was only $15 mill. I’ve also heard it’s full of dark humor and satire, so I’m glad it keeps the spirit of Grindhouse cinema at least.

The zombie apocalypse on Black Friday from the perspective of the people working in a mall has been done. It's in the Game of Thrones South Park parody and it was absolutely awesome.
Also reminded me of the opening scene from 2015's Krampus. Hordes of shoppers barging past each other and fighting, all set brilliantly to It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas.
And why not a video game? Think of it! Black Friday shoppers each with different fighting and wrestling styles fighting for great deals! you could have cool names for them like "Papaya Patty vs. Right Said Ed"! I do wish they had kept the 70's/80's distorted retro aesthetic and tongue-firmly-in-cheek humor of the Grindhouse trailer. But some studio exec was probably like, "Eli, modern audiences aren't gonna wanna see a movie that looks like that!" Still, it's a good time, and it's about time we got a solid Thanksgiving horror movie because it has always felt like the one holiday that has been neglected the most. When Thankskilling is the best it has to offer, you know you're severely lacking in the horror department.
Should’ve definitely been shot in 16mm and not that clean plastic looking digital format that’s become so overused now. A film like It Follows comes to mind where it could have still taken place in modern day but just give it a retro vibe and minimise any usage of social media and phones so the technology is ambiguous.
While Death Proof/Planet Terror were absolutely going for ‘70s pulp cinema vibes. Thanksgiving absolutely felt like a contemporary horror movie so not only would people have not understood the dirty reel aesthetic, it wouldn’t have fit the movie.
We've had so many horror movies based around Halloween which makes sense, and fun twists on Christmas which is interesting like Krampus, but I don't think there are many Thanksgiving horror films. Which...Is surprising cause you would think that would be the perfect time of year to set a horror/slasher film around. Everyone in the same house together, tensions already high cause SOMEONE had to mention godforsaken politics....It would be great to see more films based around Thanksgiving tbh. The poor holiday is like the middle child; often overlooked.
I took my 60+ parents and 13 yr old niece...it was friggin great! I got major Final Destination & Halloween vibes! Im thankful for Eli Roth this Thanksgiving!
I happy to hear Jeremy had a good time with the film. I've been looking forward to seeing this one. It's nice to see other holidays, besides Halloween and Christmas, get some slasher love.
Why not? Because Rob admitted that his “Munsters” movie was quite a hassle. So the idea of making a full-length feature of “Werewolf Women of the SS” would be very appealing to him at some point.
Honestly, my favorite post scream slasher is probably “The Faculty”, far from the scariest, but still, my favorite for reasons…..I know, plot wise, it reads as a sci-fi film, but we all know it was a slasher.
Scream is well liked in large part due to Wes Craven. There are not many directors like that if you ask me. James Wan is good at horror, though I would say he is not good at slasher films.
There is a reason for this not being so grindhouse-y. This is supposed to be a "reboot" of a film that was never made. The original Thanksgiving trailer took place in the 60s I believe. This Thanksgiving takes place present day. So it's also a joke on the modernization of reboots as well. Which I found to be pretty fun.
I remember seeing Grindhouses in theater in 2007 and the fake trailer for Thanksgiving got the loudest groan/"Oooo" I've ever heard from an audience during the trampoline part when the cheerleader goes up, we see a knife cut up through the trampoline, then see her do a split and come down. I was glad to see part of that in the new trailer
It's good to see Eli Roth make a comedy for retail workers who have to deal with the nightmare that will be upon us later this month. It might trigger PTSD for those who worked in retail that night. Black Friday is really the antithesis of what Thanksgiving is about....and they share the same 24 hours. LMAO. I love Eli Roth. We need his no bullshit satiric horror now more than ever.
my favourite section of the movie was from the parade onwards. I went from meh to wow! The kills are great, I enjoyed it a lot, but it took me a bit to really start to dig it. I have seen all of Eli Roths films, and he's getting better as a director, I hope this gets a sequel!! Thanksgiving and Totally Killer are the more entertaining slasher films I've seen this year.

Gotta say the part when you actually realize that Grindhouse is damn near two decades old and that old age moment happens, pure gold. Happens to me all the time
I never worked Black Friday but I have worked grey Wednesday. Still gives me chills from a grocery story store employee. Oddly enough, Christmas Eve was the slowest day of the entire year.
I liked it a lot too. My complaints are minor. The ending felt kind of rushed and there's one kill from the fake trailer I'd say got toned down for this movie. I'm with you though I loved the setup for the movie being John Carver was seeking revenge over the Black Friday tragedy that happened the year before. That was brilliant and I also hope as an extra maybe we will get a "Grindhouse" version when the movie comes to bluray/4k.
Of the fake trailers that was in the Grindhouse films, the one i most want to see get made into a film is Rob Zombie's Werewolf Women of The SS, starring Nicolas Cage.
I love this movie, I was more excited about this than Hunger Games. Thanksgiving gave me I Know What You Did Last Summer meets Scream TV series brutality and it was awesome.
This was actually not that bad, going in I was thinking that this would be one of those movies that sounds like a fun premise but is ultimately just a crappy waste of potential, but it was actually pretty enjoyable, I think the most entertaining thing about it are those times where you get to see the Thanksgiving style ways in which these people are killed, it’s pretty ridiculous but at the same time fun, I also thought the opening was pretty funny with this super chaotic Black Friday scene, and this is a movie that definitely knows what it is because it really doesn’t waste any time getting into the meat of things, the movie pretty much moves at a lightning fast pace and really doesn’t have any unnecessary fat on it, it’s not perfect though, I didn’t really think any of the lead characters were all that interesting, the main girl attempts to be with a very shallow setup for what’s going on with her but it just failed to engage me, and the others are just a bunch of assholes that you hate being around, and even though I’m not someone who’s bothered by gore and did find enjoyment in some of it in this movie I think that overall in terms of the gore and the meanness of the characters this movie did kinda overcook it to me, which I know is confusing because I said I do find a lot of gory movies fun but let me explain, the kind that I get more enjoyment out of are movies like Brightburn or Ready Or Not, where it’s done as quick fun little moments that keep a level of composure on things and deep down you understand that it’s meant to just be thrilling, whereas with Eli Roth’s movies he makes them in this super nasty, unpleasant fashion that’s meant to just gross you out, in Brightburn you have a man’s jaw fall off in a really gross but cool looking way but that’s all, whereas with the type of filmmaker that Eli Roth is he probably would’ve had the kid pick up the severed jaw and eat it or something because it’s just grosser, it’s fun gore vs gratuitous gore, so those moments I wasn’t too big on but when it’s a little more in the pure spectacle pocket I did enjoy it, so as a whole I did end up having a pretty good time with this movie, which did surprise me because I was honestly expecting it to be a shit fest but for what it is it’s not bad, the movie has some fun carnage, it knows what it is and doesn’t have much fat on it and even though it’s not the type of gory movie that’s usually my cup of tea this movie delivered a pretty fun time. 6/10
Yep! I always think of that Final Destination 2 opening when I spot vehicles that are carrying shit that could fall out and always avoid driving anywhere near them.
You feel old? I remember seeing ads for Halloween. The original. Not really a slasher, but The Faculty is a good one. Okay, twist my arm, Urban Legends.
Same. I remember thinking the tagline (the night HE came home) was really creepy, even though I wasn’t completely sure who ‘HE’ was. Of course, I was only 10 at the time & had never seen a slasher film, so I really didn’t have much to go on.
My favorite slasher post Scream is actually Valentine (2001). This movie does take some things from that movie I believe with the way the killer is dressed and executes. Also the killer reveal is similar predictable. With Valentine (2001) the kills get creative, there's some thought put into it, I prefer it slightly. Thanksgiving (2023) has some scenes clearly resembling other horror movies from the past. It's so obvious, you can't unsee it
I saw it today and thought the same thing!!! The killer’s costume reminded me so much of Valentine. I love Valentine. It’s an extremely underrated movie and should be regarded way better than it is IMO. So many people don’t even catch onto or notice how the women in Valentine get killed in ways that reflect the things they said to Jeremy as little kids
I'll say the closest movies ive seen to Grindhouse style in the most recent years are Dude Bro Party Massacre 3, VFW, Mandy, Hobo With a Shotgun, and kind of the Terrifier series (though they're shot a bit too clean to feel really grindhouse imo).
I wish this had come out a week earlier because my schedule is way too hectic now, but I'm glad this was as fun as it looked. We definitely needed a movie like this in my opinion. We have horror movies for pretty much everything else and now this. It looks entertaining as hell and I'll be picking this up when it's on 4K/blu-ray.
I dug Thanksgiving, but like you, I also wanted it to be a grindhouse movie like the trailer. That said, I'm sure the studio heard that idea from Eli and immediately shut it down, esp. since the Grindhouse movies were a huge bomb. It would be nice for a "grindhouse cut" to be included on the blu-ray release.
When we went to watch Five Nights at Freddy’s with our kids they showed the trailer for Thanksgiving (I forgot about the targeted movie ads). I had to explain to a 10, 8 and 4 year old what slasher films were, and why they can watch horror but not slashers. Thanks Eli Roth, future fans in the making.
Someone needs to tell Jeremy that there literally is a Black Friday based zombie movie set in a store. It was called Black Friday and came out a few years ago. It wasnt great though.
Recently started watching your vids man, great humor and critique… Cannot wait to watch Thanksgiving, and I must say I loved Urban Legend as a post Scream slasher, recently Terrifier 😁
I'm not looking forward to see Eli Roth's take on Borderlands Even though it has Craig Mazin as one of the writers, he asked for his name to be removed from the credits And be replaced by the name of "Joe Crombie"
I feel the same about Eli Roth. The fake trailer didn't do anything for me (except disgust), but I'll check this one out when I'm in the mood for a slasher.
Even tho seen this concept in film many times over, eli did good with this slasher. Loved the backstory to how he actually picked the mask for the slasher

Highly anticipating your review of Saltburn 🤣
Saw an early screening of it and immediately came to TH-cam to see if anyone reviewed it yet
Yep! I always think of that Final Destination 2 opening when I spot vehicles that are carrying shit that could fall out and always avoid driving anywhere near them.
This movie was glorious, instant classic!
Just got done watching Thanksgiving & I really enjoyed it & that's saying a lot, especially given my track record with Eli Roth's filmography.
I really enjoyed this movie! Good 90s slasher vibes. But to be honest... I wanted so much more gore.
Lmfao what?
Eli Roth's interview on Tigerbelly is super fun, solid dude
This was a great movie. Had a lot of laughs. Effects were really good too.
Honestly when I seen that freezer kill, I already knew it would be a good watch lol
Urban legend was and is the best post-Scream slasher imo
I am NOT an Eli Roth fan but I loved the original trailer & I totally loved this movie can’t wait to see it again
I'll say the closest movies ive seen to Grindhouse style in the most recent years are Dude Bro Party Massacre 3, VFW, Mandy, Hobo With a Shotgun, and kind of the Terrifier series (though they're shot a bit too clean to feel really grindhouse imo).
I believe Hobo With A Shotgun was one of the fake trailers from Grindhouse (2007) that got the movie treatment as well.
Human greed on Black Friday is real
Greed is real all the time every where. Especially by Democrats.
I dug Thanksgiving, but like you, I also wanted it to be a grindhouse movie like the trailer. That said, I'm sure the studio heard that idea from Eli and immediately shut it down, esp. since the Grindhouse movies were a huge bomb. It would be nice for a "grindhouse cut" to be included on the blu-ray release.
that would be interesting
Krampus does this in its opening scene at 1:10
Thanks for the review Jeremy
Such a great movie! So freaking funny
The 1st kill by the dumpster "lid" was straight up parody.
I really enjoyed the movie! It was just the right amount of camp for me
I appreciate the Final Destination nod. I *ALWAYS* think about that scene when behind a logging truck.
LOL I do think of final destination every time I see a logging truck.
The movie was ok, but it needed a better score. Maybe they couldn't afford Danny Elfman lol!🖤🦇👻🎃
Someone needs to tell Jeremy that there literally is a Black Friday based zombie movie set in a store. It was called Black Friday and came out a few years ago. It wasnt great though.
This was fun fun fun time at the movies I actually had that thanksgiving feeling afterwards weird rite?
Eli Roth directed The House with a Clock in Its Walls. I am sure Jeremy likes that film.
AVI ARAD will ruin Eli Roth's BORDERLANDS
The same way he ruined TASM2, UNCHARTED and MORBIUS
And is probably gonna ruin LEGEND OF ZELDA as well
We shall see. I didn’t dislike TASM2.
Don't give a shit about critics when it comes to Eli Roth. I love everything he has ever made. Fuck yeah!
Anyone remember Valentine?
Is one of my favorite teen slasher horror movies from the early 2000s. Starring Denise richards.
Recently started watching your vids man, great humor and critique… Cannot wait to watch Thanksgiving, and I must say I loved Urban Legend as a post Scream slasher, recently Terrifier 😁
I'm not looking forward to see Eli Roth's take on Borderlands
Even though it has Craig Mazin as one of the writers, he asked for his name to be removed from the credits
And be replaced by the name of "Joe Crombie"
I blame Avi Arad
I feel the same about Eli Roth. The fake trailer didn't do anything for me (except disgust), but I'll check this one out when I'm in the mood for a slasher.
There is a sequel coming in 2025 📹📷🎄
Cherry Falls with Brittney Murphy and Michael Beihn! Underrated classic!
It was hilarious, gory, and just a fun movie. Go see it!
Even tho seen this concept in film many times over, eli did good with this slasher. Loved the backstory to how he actually picked the mask for the slasher
V for Vendetta looking ass picture
THANK YOU! At last, I'm not the only one to point this out! 😆😌
First My Bloody Valentine, Halloween and Black Christmas and now Thanksgiving!?! The murderverse has come full circle!
i will maybe watch it one day, i personally think Eli Roth is a complete hack
great review. best movie reviewer on TH-cam. Scream and Final Destination were definitely inspirations. great movie and always look forward to your reviews
Wow this movie was sooooooooo bad to me
Yeah it wasn’t that good lol
