It's one of your best videos, Thomas. I prefer the old style of photography you did from your past, so these last few videos have been appreciated. Not only are you a great photographer, but you're a great storyteller. Keep up the good work.
I appreciate all the time and effort you put into your inspiring videos. Halfway through this one I had to order the Full Frame book. Now I'd really like to go to Scotland. The edit of the image you shot at @09:38 is fantastic, would love to see a Lightroom tutorial on how you went from the RAW file to the final edit. I have tonnes of photos that look similar to your file but I haven't the skill to edit them. Might make a good video one week over the winter if the weather prevents you getting out!
Im not a photographer. I got into your videos from your camper van conversion videos of all things 😂 but ive become to truly appreciate your landscape photos. I can live vicariously thru your journeys. Thank you! And keep them coming!!!
Hey Tom, been following you since I was 14 years old. You have been one of my biggest inspirations for landscape photography. Thanks to you I have followed this passion for the last 10 years. I always admired how you always kept it real. It is refreshing to see in a world of influencer photographers that show only their best work (which often times is not even good). Thanks to these kind of videos is why I have not quit photography. We all go through rough patches, event the best, like yourself. Take this time as a moment to appreciate everything you have done, look at your past work, see everything you have achieved, and continue moving forward. Btw loved the photos in this video, its vintage Thomas :) Take care of yourself mate
What's refreshing is YOU, young man! Follow your craft and work hard to master it. BUT always remember it's FUN! I've done this since I was 10 years old, so just over 50 years now and I'm still enthralled by the MAGIC of making images. Took longer in the old days but it was the anticipation of getting back to the darkroom, developing your film, eagerly waiting to see good exposures, then drying and cleaning, and PRINTING! The MAGIC of seeing your image in the amber/red light, begin to form and realize in the developer, the impatience of stopping then fixing and you're finally able to turn on the lights and see if you GOT IT. Often NOT but when you did, "Oh, what exultation!" Today, I'm still a child, all giddy and snapping away, and instantly gratified by seeing the image appear on my view screen and so anxious to get it into post and to make it as I'd envisioned. I applaud your enthusiasm Gaston and best of fortune in your own photographic journey! I have a nagging suspicion you'll make a good go of it.
Your endurance and honesty, I believe, are a great part of why your channel and work is so relatable. Struggling (publicly) and eventually coming out on top of it takes a lot of courage. Be it a good or a bad day, a great image or an okay image, your attitude is inspiring! :) Always has been! Keep it up, Tom! I'm looking forward to your videos and images with great enthusiasm every time! :) Your work means a lot! :) Thank you!
Tom your TH-cam posts have become more than the final images you produce. It’s about the whole journey, the van the locations the frustrations and the moments of elation. I look forward to your videos every week and if you get some good shots it’s a bonus. It’s your personality and humour that really matters most…
images? lol more like **IMAGE this dude literally takes like 1 photo in every video. I think that's why he doesn't like his stuff as of late he doesn't take nearly rnough photos.
Your storytelling and narration is just as captivating as your photography! Do not worry, Thomas! You are talented no matter what is published on the internet. Thank you for your honesty! 👏👏👏
Tom, I wish my photography was as “not good” as yours. Don’t pressure yourself or be pressured by others. Keep enjoying what you do. As always thanks for the time and effort in these videos.
I just paused at 4:20. Before continuing, I wanted to say that I really feel for you-I can sense the struggle you've been going through since the videos about your knee and the realities of getting older. It genuinely made me feel a bit sad to see you feeling down. I'm facing a similar challenge here, even if it’s in a different genre. The stories you share in these videos go far beyond just the 'quality of photography.' They’re real and resonate deeply. People say that the toughest moments are actually good-they’re turning points in our lives and careers because they put us at a crossroads. Just keep doing your thing...everything will fall into place Tom!
Awesome work, Thomas. The ebb and flow of inspiration, and the feeling of being unhappy with our own work shows us how much we've grown as artists. The rut, the spinning of the tires, the daily strive for that next image, that's what makes you great.
This isn’t really related to the content but perhaps the notion. I went to a photography book festival in Bristol recently. Surrounded by dozens of photographers with hundreds of their photo books. Such incredible talent and art. And I immediately hated it. Immediately felt like my photography is dogshit. I didnt even open one of the books on show. It’s daunting to feel like your photography is failing So I told myself just take photos for my self, forget others opinions and comparisons and keep enjoying the process I wonder if other commenters relate
Hi Thomas. I used to watch you from around 6 years back. Loved your style of vlogs while I was in India. Even when I was not able to click wildlife with my Nikon DSLR, your videos always inspired me to get back at it. Then got married and now moved to Canada. Its almost a year now and I got back to your channel and damn my excitement. 🎉 good to see you brother. ❤ The same old style is so soothing and i connected, all the same. More love and power to you 💛 you are an inspiration in true sense. ✨️ keep it up and take care. 👏
Tom, thanks so much for this video. I've found myself in a rut with my photography this year having very very low shutter count over the course of 10 months. Until, I've just returned from spending 2 weeks in Scotland in Glencoe and Skye. And then another week in Ireland. A whole three weeks dedicated to nothing but the experience of leaving the U.S. for really the first time ever and exploring this beautiful part of the world. This experience did so much, not only for my photography, but also my soul. Watching this, and having just been there, and now going through all the frames that I took over those three weeks, has brought back that joy, that spark. Much more than any piece of gear I could have purchased instead. As always, keep posting your journey, I will be watching. And perhaps inspired again, in the not to distant timeframe, to explore taking my camera.
I really like the shot with the vibrant red berries. I also love the fact that it was an unexpected gem that caught your eye; these shots are the ones that seem to be the ones that help us keep going during the times where things aren't happening. I think it's like they just shout out, "keep going ... sometimes these little gems will just appear".
I dont know how you made that crazy river and berry tree look so good. when you were showing the shot being taken it looked like there was no way that would look good, but it turned out so good. As far as your feelings of a slump, you dont have to always be great, we all have are lesser moments. keep plugging on and know we all love coming along on your adventures! So thanks for that.
This is my first video I have watched of yours, and my first time seeing any of your work! Absolutely beautiful. Its wonderfully complemented by the joy and sense of authentic adventure that you bring! Looking forward to watching more and learning to make my own landscapes better!
Videos like this are really therapeutic. Being farely new in photography I already felt ups and downs so thank you for highlighting that aspect as well!
Tom, I appreciate much your openness and honesty, that it’s not always glorious and easy to be at the top. Give yourself space to be human. I also work with compisition, both in photo and music and know very well that it’s hard work where you sometimes have work hard and then maybe even erase and to redo and redo your work. I have learned much from your video's and love watch them. Keep going, Tom! You are an inspiration to many!
Impressed by the images, but also pretty impressed by your ability to reverse the van at a fair speed while talking to camera at the same time, without ending up in a hedge! 13:20 😂 Great video as ever!
While watching your video, you flashed a book “Full frame”. I had purchased that book a while ago at a second hand bookstore and never got around to reading yet. After seeing it on your video, you inspired me to read it. I am part way through and really enjoying it. I always look forward to your videos! Keep up the good work.
Thank you for your honesty, specifically when creativity is not going so well. It is such a reality and lots of artist (me included) don't always articulate this part of being a creative well. The lows create the highs and it is the balance of accepting it all. thank you, really enjoy your videos.
You naturally have very high standards for yourself. I enjoyed this video for the discussion on framing, focus stacking and even finding out that the trail up the hill didn’t take you to a lookout spot. We all get lost sometimes. I have your calendar already and it is fabulous as usual. Hang in there. JoAnne
Days full of surprises. What a treat. And a reason to keep shooting. Thank you for taking us along and speaking your mind. Happens to most of us. As a remedy, I am reminded of the musings of New York City street photographer Andre D. Wagner: "What does the world have to show me today?" Keeps me going. Each day.
Tom, the image shown around 9:40 is fantastic. The strong shapes and lines top to bottom and the color juxtapositions-in particular that red horizontal triangle near bottom-this image just really works for me. This whole set is strong. If you felt you were in a slump, you broke it here. Also I appreciate how you have been showing the raws vs. finished versions. I would love an episode where you would let us observe your post processing workflow for an image or two. Thank you for what you do!
I don't know what you're crying about, I've enjoyed every video over the last couple of months and continue to be exited every time I get a "new video" notification. I'm sure there is more time put into creating one of these videos than any of us realize, but they are a great escape from everyday life. We get to travel beyond our own borders, hear some great storytelling, and learn how to improve on our own photography. Keep it up as long as you can.
I love the red berry tree shot. And the yellow leaves shot is great also!!! Well all the shots were beautiful!! I always love your inspiring vlogs!!! Thank you!
This is one of my favorite channels. You are an inspiration Mr. Thomas. I just bought your calendar. I can't wait to hang it up in my office. I hope one day I will be able to do what you do, that is... doing what you love on a daily basis! Cheers!
Your mojo will always return, I know this too. Don't shoot me down but I wonder how much the possible promise a new system brought distracted you. Don't let others direct you off your path or get in to your head. You've been a wonderful constant in our worlds Thomas. Sending my appreciation.
Tom, thank you for you honesty. It refreshing to hear that even someone with you skills has those phases where you just dont seem to be able to get the photo. I think the important point you bring out so nicely in this video is that the only way you are going to ever get past the bumps in the road is to keep going.
Great video as usual Tom. I love the way you've gone back to basics with your Photography. It reminds me of the videos you did when you started your channel, explaining the angles, the settings and the light etc and don't be too hard on yourself about putting out great content, it's the process of you taking the images that we love as well as the stunning captures you produce.
I have been following you several years and I barely fit the description of the amateur photographer. I have enjoyed your travels, adventures and experiences enough to continue following. Your calendar also hangs on my wall currently and has several of the past years. Your channel provides a refreshing weekly mental vacation for which I am grateful. Thanks for taking us along.
The red berry shot was gorgeous even if you nearly fell in the water! I'm glad you filmed that to keep us on the edge of our seats! And I liked the thought process on composing the leaves. Even if you didn't get a shot, it's fun being out there with you on your adventures, so count that as a success too!!
That makes your work even more valuable to me: seeing you as person who is just like any of us, struggeling and still going out, working on scenes and how to compose them best. I recently went on a phototrip with some good friends and we all had our struggles here and there in amazing foggy condotions. That might be the time it hurts the most: stunning conditions, great nature, but no idea how to frame it 😅 I learn a lot from observing how you see the landscape and what frames you create. Thanks for showing us!
We all go through our up and down perspectives of our work I think, mate. It seems you pulled out of it here and rightfully so. Excellent photos, every one and you teach me how to talk through the work each time. Thanks and head up!
I love your work,I love your videos,I love your tenacity. You have taught me so much and I am grateful . Remember that nothing good or bad lasts forever. I should know I’m 68 years young. I chose photography to aid in some healing that was hard won The best is soon to come. Let yourself rest too.
Hello Tom, the fact that you're still up for getting out there looking for ideas means you are not 'lost'. In any field there are times when it's ok to look in the mirror and say: "maybe I could use a break". (my field is music and I know a lot about the muse deserting me 🙂) Maybe a short holiday or a try a new pursuit? Personally I think a holiday is a state of mind - a long wet weekend with my record collection is a mini-break to me. So stress not. ☮♥🍕
Your work is always stunning. I think your photography is perfect. And even if you don't personally feel that way, the content you generate in general, meaning, your videos and your journey, is what we come here for.
Tom, 5 years ago I launched myself into photography. You were the 1st channel.i found and followed. I have always believed in your vision and adventures. We all struggle buddy and pushing through it defines us and yes strengthens us. You struggle but you always push through. You are a warrior and I will follow always. Thank you.
Just what I needed. This and your other recent one. Recurring message: can't shoot if you don't get out there. I blame you for 20' RAM Promaster Panoramic van in my yard. Inspired by yours. Gotta get out and burn some gas to get some images. Thanks for your transparency. It leaves the ladder down for those of us still climbing.
The whole human aspect with all it entails, all the struggles and low-points, is a big part of why i am a fan of your content. What you share is reality. And i love it. Your photos are also nice.
When this happen I try to bring joy to my work, always trying to remember that joy comes from me and not from the actual work. It needs to be a reflection of you like Minor White said many years ago "When you approach something to photograph it, first be still with yourself until the object of your attention affirms your presence..."
Mate, some times we have the up's & down's but the content you deliver everytime is great & i learn so much from each youtube video. Keep it up & some times having a little step away just gives us the drive to produce even better content.
I enjoy your videos Tom. Beautiful images and your tips shared are always appreciated. Keep up the fight my photography friend! You make a difference. 😊
So nice to see some vintage Thomas shots-- The first couple are my favorite-- The red berry shot while colorful I think is to messy over all-- I am amazed you can get out to so many positions. I am an guy in my 70's so many of my shots are within 100 yards of the car-- Keep up the positivity and enjoy your process and your work.-- PS very understanding spouse you have. LOL
Tom, I can feel your struggle. But hey, when you are disappointed with your photography or whatever, remember you are still an amazing human! Another great video. Thanks!
We watch your videos for the story telling and for inspiration to keep going out there. Your photos are almost secondary to the experience. Keep up the good work.
Nice to see you enjoying your photography again! If you get stuck in a bad patch again, pack your bags and come down to Australia. Would love to see your perspective on our landscapes. I can think of a few options you would love.
Thomas, enjoy where you are in life! Focus on that feeling of gratitude and let your creativity come and go. Trust the process, you'r best work has yet to come! Thx for inspiring us all. Your living your dream mate!
Another very nice video Tom, and you are right the red berries does overcome the chaotic frame. Also I would like to comment on the extraordinary amount of additional shots and camera positions you incorporate in every episode to make us viewers feel like we are included in what seems to be a documentary crew style of video. Your attention to detail in the establishing shots of your journeys are amazing. For instance the drone shot of the car turning in on a track which takes a lot of additional effort for a one man show, for a just few seconds of included video. A hearty well done Tom Heaton
Oh wow... I usually don't comment on videos at all, but Thomas, your content is amazing. Appreciate being true to yourself, it's not about photography, it's about pure authenticity. I would love to spend an evening together, drinking tea and chatting about life and photography. Greetings from Vilnius, Lithuania!
stunning final image Tom, it always amazes me how you can get such strong results from incredibly grey and dull conditions. Literally not seen the sun in 2 weeks here in Ireland, so seeing you getting some nice images is very motivating. I will say this video is an amazing unintentional advertisement for super grippy trail running and hiking shoes!
Keep your head up Thomas. I am always looking forward to your videos and watch every one of them since a couple of years! Not for the nice landscapes - although they are a bonus for sure. Not for your images actually - although they are good even fantastic somtetimes (the last one was great!) But mostly for you. You always keep things real, down to earth, entertaining and relaxing. Just the right thing in this fast life where most social media is full of drama and scandals.
Tom, I always enjoy what you share with us. It is always informative, and a cut above the rest. Keep on with the great love you have for your photography. I am sure we all appreciate the effort and your form of banter -knocking yourself!
Really like and appreciate your authenticity, ever since I discovered your YT Channel many years ago. You are an amazing photographer, and I particularly like your abstract and intimate scenes work. Generally, your work is inspiring. All photographers have phases, where they struggle with their work. I do regularly. But I also believe that is part of the process and is also a sign of developing as a photographer. I am glad that you are enjoying Scotland without any time pressure. I think it is also a good idea, to go back in memory lane, and remember what used to inspire you in the beginning of your photography journey. But I cannot believe, that you did not bring Wellies to Scotland ;-)
I’ve felt a bit like this last year so to hear it from someone who is so popular is refreshing. Absolutely love moody flat conditions and the fact that you don’t just rely on golden hour
I was pleased to see , I took the exact same image as you almost a year ago to this day. The one with the small tree. The fact that we both saw an image here, in the same place filled me with confidence. As always a great and entertaining video as you always create. Even when you think you don’t
my old boss who I assisted in London during the late eighties for 3 odd years used to say he was happy to get 6 or so great images a year. It took me along time to understand how he arrived at that. Now in my sixties having spent 38 years shooting I get it, the goal posts move, we move them, the more visually literate we become the less satisfied we become and the more we strive for better and better images.
your photography is always beautiful i understand pushing your limit but you are changing too and so can your photography you're doing incredible and you are enough!
Honestly mate, I think we all know the struggle. Half a year ago I had the same problem. And then I thought, does is really matter that there are times when my photos are not getting better with every schot. Luckily I am in the luxury position that is doesn’t matter for me and I just decided to enjoy the adventures that I get to experience. I picked up my filmcamera and put my digital camera away, and wouldn’t you know it. I enjoy it more then ever before and my photos are better than ever before. All this because i started photographing whilst having adventures rather then going on adventures because I want a specific image. I’ll end it with a thank you for inspiring me as a little kid all those years ago, watching your videos with my dad. Right now as a student your videos remind me of a home away from home. Keep up the good work, cheers from the Netherlands
Don't pressure yourself to much to get a great shot, we all enjoy the vids and great locations that most of us cannot visit, enjoy each location and keep em coming
Was thinking of you the other day. I hadn't been watching any of your videos for a year or two but while out wandering around Banff National Park on a nice misty day the visuals shook out a few memories of you being here in the Park. You always find the Zen moments.
For what it's worth, I always make time for a quick coffee break to watch your videos, they're my weekly dose of stunning photography. Today, I just loved the second one, with the gnarly branch, and especially the tip about the framing of the tree, that's the reason why I like your videos.
Standing in the river? Yeah, that had me nervous for you! I can confirm the calendar is fantastic and the photos really do match the seasons well. Thanks for autographing mine!
Though you may not find outstanding videos or photos every time you go out, at least you get to enjoy the scenery and you have that vans of yours to relax in all the time! Have a great one!
Tom, it's tough having to "feed the beast" all the time with the hard reality of juggling your creative wants and your financial needs. It's not fair out there and we all face it so you're smart to recognize it and diversifying with "617 Club" and other means. You never want to be at the mercy of anyone else's whims, especially cold hard algorithms, so keep on being true to yourself and the support from your true fans will be there. f8 and all!
The video might say that your photography “hasn’t been good lately” but those of us watching this week’s content might argue otherwise. The images at 3:09 and 16:22 are personal favourites, and - as usual - it’s another lovely video (with constructive advice). I hope you know that your subscribers really appreciate how much effort you put in to make these videos (and to produce them at a high standard). P.S. Thanks for featuring the Raw vs. Edited versions of your images at the end of the videos: they are always useful to see.
Loved today. Great photos, enviable setups for them . Savour your physical fitness and balance while you can. My favourite sessions are when you make the best of what you have. I have to make do with the cdn rockies.
Thank you so much, I love watching your videos, they are inspirational and most of all relatable. It’s easy to think that everyone else is out there finding/making great photos and you’re not, so being reminded that it’s a process and enjoy yourself anyway is encouraging to just get out and keep trying. your photos are beautiful and sharing the raw image is brilliant, every single time it impresses on me to get it right in camera and don’t rely on post to make a nice shot. Thanks for not being pretentious!
Three questions I’ve always s wondered about: where does the wind go when you take a tree image at 0.5 seconds? How do you take a drone image of your van while driving or while setting up a tripod without controlling the drone? What do you put on the soles of your boots that allows you to climb on slippery rocks while holding an extended tripod and narrating at the same time? I need some of that magic.
Tom, don't push yourself too hard, not every time you post a video or a photo means it has to be absolutely stunning. Life is full of ups and downs, enjoy the ride
I appreciate that, thanks a lot.
@ you’re welcome mate, I know this feeling

images? lol more like **IMAGE this dude literally takes like 1 photo in every video. I think that's why he doesn't like his stuff as of late he doesn't take nearly rnough photos.
Your storytelling and narration is just as captivating as your photography! Do not worry, Thomas! You are talented no matter what is published on the internet. Thank you for your honesty! 👏👏👏
Thanks Thomas. Appreciate your work
Tom, I wish my photography was as “not good” as yours. Don’t pressure yourself or be pressured by others. Keep enjoying what you do. As always thanks for the time and effort in these videos.
You bring the simplicity to the next level. I love the images... Good job as always!
It’s daunting to feel like your photography is failing
So I told myself just take photos for my self, forget others opinions and comparisons and keep enjoying the process
I wonder if other commenters relate
Certainly do relate. Just keep taking those photos. Everyone goes through all the stages.
Love the tree with the red berries above the stream. Thankfully you didn't fall in.
As always, really admire your honesty …. Everyone has troughs and lows and recognising them is half the battle … you are the best, it’s all good.
Thanks a lot.
Thanks!
Thank you very much for this. I will spend it on a chocolate brownie tomorrow :)
We’ve all been there Sir, great (and brave) to see a very talented photographer talk openly like this. Your work is stunning, congratulations
Agreed. I tend to watch tom's videos before bed. Helps take in the info but also find his videos very relaxing
Skills 😂
While watching your video, you flashed a book “Full frame”. I had purchased that book a while ago at a second hand bookstore and never got around to reading yet. After seeing it on your video, you inspired me to read it. I am part way through and really enjoying it. I always look forward to your videos! Keep up the good work.
It's behind you... Oh no, it isn"t... Oh yes it is!
Well it is that time of year.
Merry Christmas and a Happy new year Thomas.
Regards.
I especially loved the river/berries shot and how you simplified it with a square crop.
Cheers!
Yes Tomas, these videos where the frying pan comes out are often the best ones! Liked the yellow leafy one
Love the image with the golden leafs. Loved all the images in the video, but the last one takes the cake.
Loved that image of the red berries, Tom - you were right in my opinion, they really brought the image together. Nice one!
If you ever need to take a break, we will understand. Take care of yourself brother. You have given all of us enough to last a lifetime. We love ya!
It’s the videos for me Thomas, you’ve always inspired with or without stunning imagery. Just keep doing your things
I look up to your work immensely
Your videos are an antidote to a world in chaos and a internet space filled with fakes. Keep up the good work. 👍
That makes your work even more valuable to me: seeing you as person who is just like any of us, struggeling and still going out, working on scenes and how to compose them best. I recently went on a phototrip with some good friends and we all had our struggles here and there in amazing foggy condotions. That might be the time it hurts the most: stunning conditions, great nature, but no idea how to frame it 😅
I learn a lot from observing how you see the landscape and what frames you create.
The red berries works for me, a Jackson Pollock feel. The golden leaves, with darker pallet. beautiful. I
Your work is always stunning.
Lovely photos. Thanks for sharing.
Stuff the images, the way you get multiple video angles - even near those slippery rocks - is amazing.
The raw file / jpg comparisons at the end are great to see. Thanks for including those. Great video
stunning final image Tom, it always amazes me how you can get such strong results from incredibly grey and dull conditions.
Not for your images actually - although they are good even fantastic somtetimes (the last one was great!)
But mostly for you.
Nicely done Heaton-this was a lovely set of photos-calendar worthy I dare say.
You are getting out there, into nature, exploring and connecting and that is inspiring.
Wandering out on the slippery rocks was SO worth it - stunning picture!
Everybody is off their game once in a while, and honestly even your not so good photos, are still pretty damn good, and your videos are a joy to watch
