    The laser measure doesn't actually use the laser. It emits an ultrasonic pitch and the device listens for the amount of time that it takes for the sound to return, in order to determine pitch. The laser is just for the user to aim it. Therefore, room acoustics can affect the measurement.

    • @thehochmaster2
      @thehochmaster2 6 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      *distance, not pitch, sorry.

      Good to know! I did hear a dull pulsating sound whenever activating the laser, but Bailey distracted me by chasing it and I never got back to that.

    • @thehochmaster2
      @thehochmaster2 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I suggest using it outside or in places with dull acoustics if you want more accurate measurements. For example it would probably be pretty good at measuring the distance between your back porch and the cinderblock wall considering open skies have no ceilings and therefore almost no errant acoustics.

    • @dr666demento

      That's what I was thinking, the shape of your hand and your skin is confusing the measurement, hence ''Err''.

      When he was measuring the painting it seemed that he was starting at the coed start and not the metal buckle on the end of the cord. I believe that’s where the discrepancies were coming from. As for the roller there’s not much of a way to test that and the laser I don’t know what to tell ya 😂

    you need to make sure that when you measure with this that you have 90 degree angles between the device and the surfice your placing it on. when you measured the wall it was slightly angled so it truly did have 40 3/4 measurement, had you had proper 90 degree angles it would have been correct, same with levelness. Either carry around a level and a square or stick to the regular measuring tape.

    • @Freakinreviews
      @Freakinreviews  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It was flush against the wall and the floor, so I don't know if that was the problem there, but I agree that with something like this you do have to watch the angle.

    • @Rattrap007
      @Rattrap007 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Freakin' Reviews yeah looked on the video that it was slightly off on angles. If used with a level to insure it is 90 degrees from where you measure then it would be fine. Plus this works as a dog toy.

      MoneyAndPeople I was looking for a comment about this particular measurement. I was wondering if it wasn't accurate because the laser bounced off the baseboard, onto the measuring tape? Measuring between two mirrors with the laser would really throw it off. Lol

      This tool is so bad on so many levels. Before you design a new tape measure you have to have used one daily and this person does not nor ever has. It is a classic example of tool designers not really using tools or people designing traffic layout systems who have never driven a car!! It really is that bad!!!!!!!!! Exactly this device could not measure to the millimeter and measuring is at least to the millimeter. Did you know we can actually measure to 1/10 of a millimeter by hand. Make a diagonal scale like they used to teach us in technical drawing in high school and you can accurately set out to the tenth of a millimeter.

    as thehochmaster2 mentioned. The laser mode is actually using ultrasonic pitch. Hence, if the surface you are pointing at is at an angle, the ultrasonic pitch will not bounce back to the unit, it will bounce off away in the direction of the angel pointed at, hence, error. Also, remember when using the cord mode (as with any tape measure) if you do not have the tape/cord "level" across the surface your measuring, you will be adding in an upward or downward angle measurement that can skew your measurement up to ??? whatever angle you skewed. The same principle would apply in roller mode, if you roll downward or upward and not level, your measurement will be skewed by that angle.

  • @rbmwiv
    @rbmwiv 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The laser is for the user to see where they are measuring. It uses ultrasonic sensor for getting the length. That’s what the hole with the screen is for.

  • @skykings89
    @skykings89 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The big issue with that roller mode is you have to make sure you are going in a perfect straight line, any dip or raise you do would add little 1/16 or less amounts to your measurement. So over that 75 foot wall you might add 4 or 5 inches which is a huge problem

  • @twistedsteelandtigermeat1101
    @twistedsteelandtigermeat1101 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    The laser is a guide to show where your measuring too. I believe the measuring is actually done like a bat. It emits a small clicking sound and calculates the distance by how long it takes for the sound to return. So uneven surfaces and excessive ambient noise could be the problem.

  • @coondogtheman
    @coondogtheman 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have a Ryobi sonic measurer/IR thermometer that works like this.
    I think I paid $30 for it at Home Depot. Mine errors out at just over 1 foot.
    Might get this when it's on clearance because $30 for a tape measure is a bit much.
    The tapping/clicking sound is the ultrasonic sound emitted by the unit. It is listening to the return sound and calculating the distance. Room conditions such as curtains will affect the reading. That's why it was throwing an error when you put your hand in front of it yet it worked on the bacon wave box.

  • @joebritton1481
    @joebritton1481 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    The discrepancy was because you had it said to measure to the back of the device that's why it was saying 27 inches not 24. Also on normal tap measure the metal tab is a sliding device to measure the inside or outside of something. Push it against a wall and it moves it, pull it against the edge of a board it moves out. Often time over time and use the rivet gets worn out so it gets loose and becomes about a quarter of an inch or so off. Which is why you saw a difference between the the tape measures and when you were measuring the concrete. The one was worn out

    That tapping noise is the sonic measurement (the laser is only a pointer). Sonic mode is sensitive to air temperature. MeasureKing probably compensates for this, but its temperature may not match that of the air. Also, the sonic beam is wider then the laser beam.

  • @kimanismith7206
    @kimanismith7206 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think while using laser mode you would need to start with the back end/butt at the 24 inch mark to get a accurate reading rather than starting at the front end. I think that is the reason you were getting that additional 2 inches in your measurements on laser mode is because the tape measure is 2 inches that reflects in your reading if that makes sense. I might be wrong but give it a try.

  • @FullCeramicDetail
    @FullCeramicDetail 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    The laser is just for referencing. It actually uses sonar, which is the click you hear. That's why it doesn't work on rounded objects (hands, wall trim). This is why there is a conical shape next to the actual laser diode on the tape measure. This is the sonar speaker and receiver/microphone.
    A laser alone cannot measure distance. It would need at least 3 lasers and a camera to capture and triangulate the distance.

    • @prebenkul
      @prebenkul 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It does solve problems, just poorly for example: The laser function allows you to measure longer distances (Though inconsistent) and also the same thing with the roller function as with a normal tape measure, it runs out of range after so and so far which really isn't far. There's also the string function, which allows you to measure round objects or allows you to measure angles where a normal tape measure would bend as shown in this video. So basically, you get a longer range and allows you to measure ANY terrain. So 2 problems solved. However, I doubt its a cheap product and I also doubt its durable, if it falls, its prob gonna break.

      There’s a proper tool for every job that does its function better than other tools, which justifies the existence of that tool. Combining multiple tools means compromising something. This thing is a heap of compromise!

    • @prebenkul
      @prebenkul 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      With a new tool, it always comes with advantages and disadvantages, no matter what it is. You cant make a product that's perfect, all pros. There will be a downside or more, every time. This tool might have longer ranges and next level measuring but its disadvantages is inaccurate and inconsistent measures and most likely fragile, meaning it breaks when it falls. This is what technology is. You always try to invent a next gen tool that makes working easier. With a tool like this, you don't have to buy all the components this already have and so save money and tool box space but risk that this brakes or is inconsistent with its measurements. With the stone axe, came the axe we have today. From huts, to buildings. For every technology we improve, theres always going to be fallbacks to them.

    The reason you may have had issues with the laser is it must reflect back to get a measurement. If the surface is too reflective, diffuses(scatters), or is even slightly curved will cause error. The trim was not flat enough. Tho I am surprised it didn't give an error. It should know to error out a non proper reflection of the Lazer. Showing it is poor set up. Still a neat tool with a ton of potential. Sadly accuracy is too important for it's discrepancies.

    You might need to rethink your controls (the tests). The trim of your wall, for example, does not provide for a good control. The laser will of course provide faulty feedback when faced with a slightly shiny and curved wall trim.
    You should set up a lil testing area in your yard that uses very exact controls, so you can get the best results. Aside from that, great vid!

    Bought one off of Amazon. The Laser seems to actually be an acoustic measuring device with a laser just for looks or aiming. My "laser" measurements are broken and don't even work. But I mainly bought it for the string and roller measurment modes.

    I got one of these in a Marshall's when I moved into my new apartment. I needed to measure the space even though my stuff hadn't arrived yet, and so I just bought the first tape measure I found nearby (it sucked finding out there was an ace hardware store like 2 blocks away, woof). I thought it was... Eh, neat, but for $20 I wish I'd saved my money. One quality I did like, however, was the "stickiness" of the cord tip. It's made a of kinda grippy material, and since the cord is flexible, it doesnt pull on the tip as much. This made it possible to set the end of the cord, then walk away from it in a way that would be pretty finicky with a standard tape measure.
    Ultimstely, the thing is just too complicated. I gave it to my partner since she didn't have a tape measure to begin with, and I'm pretty sure she's never going to use it because it's difficult to intuit how to use it properly. There's something to be said about simplicity in design, and having all these other nifty features can be more of a hassle than it's worth when you just want to know how wide the damn cabinets are.

    Bailey is a star, though. I can see this being useful for measuring estimates for paint jobs but not much else. Can measure round surfaces and ceilings to find out about how much paint you need. But a regular one is probably better for everything else!

    Most laser measurement devices work best using a target. Surveyors use a target with red and white squares at opposing quadrants giving a distinct point of reference. I suspect variations in reflectivity affect the measurement.

    I do fabrication as a hobby, and I could definitely see me chucking this in the trashcan out of frustration, or any person who does professional homebuilding work and needs accuracy. That said, I do believe this may be acceptable for someone who just wants to perform basic tasks, like hang pictures where it doesn't need to be super accurate, or measuring gardens beds for landscaping.

    From what I can tell the Laser mode needs to be on a certain type of surface like typical flat/eggshell paint to work best from your review, and also not be measuring a angle.
    Where your 27.5" measurement later in the video was on a angled baseboard, vs earlier which was fairly accurate, nothing you'd want to trust for cutting something, but was on a flat baseboard.

  • @michaelward402

    I merely go by the advertising given for each model of the measure king, whereby it clearly states on each measuring tool laser and on a different one ultrasonic.
    You are mistaken as to cost of a laser measure, which is typically around the price of this measure at the bottom end increasing in cost from that point.
    As far as the pitch of the noise you hear, that can just be the frequency of the oscillator you can hear. If you caret o note no measurement could be made with his hand in the way, which points to a laser measure, given that an ultrasonic measure would give a reading.

  • @kmarshirley
    @kmarshirley 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think that when your measurement kept coming out 27 instead of 25 is because you still had that option on to measure it from the back instead of the front where you had it lined up. Also someone else said in the comments that you should do a drop test to see how much it can withstand bc people drop tape measures all the time and I second this suggestion. Thanks for another great review. Kind of bummed it is just ok bc I was thinking it would be a good present for my dad. Until I know for sure if the measuring g is correct I cannot purchase this item. Hopefully they come out with something better.

  • @mheidler80

    I think when you tried to compare the laser to the actual measuring tape the metal tabs at the bottom of the measuring tapes were throwing off the laser and giving you bad readings. Try doing it next to the measuring tapes, not above or directly next to them.

    Just sprang for a different competitor on Amazon ($26.99 reduced to $13.50 with a coupon). Not getting rid of our tape measures yet, but this could be useful for rough distance measurements within a house, when I can't corral a kid or a husband to hold the other end of the tape measure.

    (2:05/2:15) There is space between your fingers. It’s on your finger and through the space of your finger. It does not know the way to measure this, because you cannot measure two sides at once. (Unless you have two measuring tools to use.)

    Nice toy for Bailey. The laser maybe affected by the sunlight. Do a test away from the window might give better readings. In general it is useful but not in any professional setting. Right now the standard tape measure is winning. The roll measure seems to be the best. Be careful the stupid plant does jump out and get in you way. It's like driving and the power pole jumps in front of you 😂😂😂

  • @johndough446
    @johndough446 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Is the tape measure 2 inches long? The laser was giving a high of 2 inches, so it might be measuring and adding two inches since you'd have the tape measure against the wall or other surface if you were measuring from it. Essentially it might measure from the back of the tape measure rather than from the front.

    Measurements are more accurate if you're squared up and not slightly angled. The laser measurers I've used only do close approximations. There are "sonar" gadgets that are even less accurate. I'll stick with the standard tape rules.

  • @adriennetriplett7537
    @adriennetriplett7537 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think that when you are using the laser for measurement, you are assuming that walls are exactly perpendicular to the floor. That is not always the case, and could account for the difference.
