  • ►Is your MK7 Volkswagen GTI constantly low on coolant or are you experiencing intermittent overheating? If you are, there's a good chance that your water pump and thermostat housing assembly are to blame. Addressing the issue at the first signs of failure can save you a lot of headaches and money down the line. Some of the symptoms of a failing water pump and thermostat housing are:
    -Coolant leaking through the weep hole
    -Water pump pulley shaft play which indicates a bad bearing
    -Squeaking from the water pump at idle
    -Low coolant light on the instrument cluster
    -Intermittent or constant overheating

      @@fcpeuro I have a 2016 gti and I just got the code P00B7, and it said my rpms were restricted to 4,000. Is this probably what I need to get done? How much would someone charge to do this? There is no way I would be able to do this job myself. Thanks

      Those are straight up the biggest pieces of crap I’ve never had to work on in my entire career. Over engineering is like no engineering at all. It sucks and no wonder why they are so unreliable. They tried to fit a ton of stuff that belongs in a way bigger car than a Golf. I literally worked on fully electronic V8s in late BMWs that were way less cramped than this. I have pity for the ones who worked on that car to make it what it is.

    You know, you don't have to remove the intake manifold. Remove the intake pipe, throttle, air box and piping, and fan shroud. Fan shroud comes out with just 2 clips. Gives more than enough room to work. This is actually the way the official VW service manual says to do it. I've done it before and it saves a lot of time.

    • @fcpeuro
      @fcpeuro  4 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      James you are correct this is not the only way to do the install, but the process we decided to show was the one VW/Audi recommends which is with removing the intake manifold. When going the other route with removing the fan shroud it can be difficult to see and difficult to do properly. We were also doing a carbon cleaning and replacing the intake manifold on this car, so the standard way of removal made the most sense. Appreciate your insight, and thanks for giving the video a watch!

    Thank you, thank you, thank you Aaron and FCP Euro! My water pump died and I got price shock from the quote to replace it. Found your video and did it myself. While I was at it I cleaned the intake valves. They were thick with carbon, to be expected I suppose at 100k miles, hadn't been done before. Saved a bunch doing this all myself, I had to buy most of the tools including jack and still cost me < half of what I would have paid someone to do it. It's all back and running smoothly. Someone else commented here to remove the radiator shroud for better access, that definitely helps. Getting a wand for your walnut blaster helps. Getting long (6" extension) and stubby torx bits definitely helps (not just the regular bits). Thanks again!

    Take the 2 end studs out in the intake manifold and replace with m6x45 bolts. The fuel line will never be a problem again and it's so much easier taking the manifold on and off. You can tighten up the fuel line with the manifold off too, this way you know you have it nice and tight.

    you did work there! Nice job! Unfortunately looks like i have a coolant leak too, it's been leaking on the driveway a little bit at a time through a weep hole. It's dried up yellow semi crusty residue over my oil pan. I thought it was an oil pan leak but it didn't make sense that the oil would dry up.... wish it was the oil pan.... cant quite see it but it looks like from the thermostat housing/water pump... Also when it first happened I couldn't tell if my fluid level was low since it was still between the lines, but now it's bellow minimum, took a month or two to drop 3/4" on bellow the min mark. I think it's been going on for about 4-5 months now. I hope the leak doesn't get worse and see if I can make it last until sprint or summer even...

The only problem is that now I have multiple cylinder misfires that weren't there before we did the work. Check engine light is on and the EPC light comes on when we hit about 3500 rpm, causing the engine to run rough and feel like it has adjusted something to prevent damage. I moved the coils around and the misfire didn't follow and I got new plugs but no luck. Still getting multiple misfires, check engine and EPC. Has anyone experienced this and figured it out?

    Hi, good video!
    I have a question. After installing the new pump, do you need to use the computer to activate the electronic thermostat? I've read it somewhere the Gen 3 888 engine electronic water pump has a motor inside the housing. If not activate/set properly, the motor will keep spinning and searching for the right setting and eventually will burn in a few months. Is that true? Thanks!

My question is that since this is such a common failure on the MK7s, has VW made an effective replacement part to mitigate ongoing issues? Or are you seeing that the rate of failure has continued after housing replacement? Also, great video. Learned a lot.

      My 2016 polo 1.8 gti 192hp went for a service at vw 2yr ago ish & the mechanic videod the after explanation of the service & issues found , it showed a coolant leak at the water pump area but didnt tell me what part the leak was coming from, so when i went back to collect my car he said it needed to come in again to see where the leak was coming from which would be chargable to diagnose it & obviously chargeable for the replacement parts & labour , i asked if the warranty was still valid but it had run out unfortunatly!
      I asked if this was a recall job voz i knew this was a common issue with these waterpumps etc but he said there wernt any recalls for it , i was pretty pissed off tbh coz he wanted me to pay over £600 to get the work done.
      I wernt paying that as thats extortionate ! Surely if this part has issues & most of the models with this type of waterpump has it then it should be a recall to replace with a updated one so solve it !?
      Anyway i left it & ended up puttin leak stop in the system but wish i hadnt put that in coz ive got a code for a heater support pump locked come up on the diagnostics ,
      Shes coming upto 49000 miles now aswell so i think im gona bite the bullet & do the job myself soon & may also need to buy a new parking heater pump aswell , i can get the waterpump unit with the bits for about £160ish & i have all the tools i need to do the work anyway lol
      This vid seems like a easy follow vid & the engine layout is pretty much similar to the polo engine .

    This is probably a stupid question, but would a dealership install a new water pump and not replace the thermostat housing at the same time? The reason I ask is because they replaced the water pump on my 2017 GTI at 38k miles one year ago, but my coolant level continued to drop very slowly over the past year. I brought it back to the dealership yesterday and they said the leak was coming from the thermostat housing. They didn't have one in stock so they kept it overnight and it should be ready today.

    Great video! I have a 2 part question. First, when replacing the thermostat housing/actuator, does the new one or car need any coding to work with a replacement? (New thermostat actuator need some kind of homing sequence?) Second, the book I have doesn't mention removing the intake manifold to perform this job. It looks doable with the manifold in place, but possibly harder, what are your thoughts on this?

    • @fcpeuro
      @fcpeuro  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Corey its totally doable with the Manifold in place, just takes a bit more finesse and really difficult to see (and shoot a video). Aaron was also cleaning his valves AND replacing a faulty Manifold when he did this job. That being said its not a bad way to approach the job and inspect those aforementioned parts while they are off. No coding necessary

      www.fcpeuro.com/products/airlift-ii-cooling-system-filler-kit-uview-uv550500 . We personally love using this on all of our cars here, it contracts all of your soft cooling pipes down due to the extreme amount of vacuum, and holds that vacuum to then bring in the new coolant all within whats essentially a closed loop using the venturi principal. It doesn't hurt to run the car and let any other natural burps out that may somehow still occur to be sure tstats are open etc. and top off accordingly but this should get your system 99.9% where it needs to be.
