  • Matt Watson and the team are fishing for sharks as part of a research program to find out more about the sharks in New Zealand's inshore waters. The first destination is a popular swimming beach in the height of summer and they encounter some very big sharks, much to the horror of the on looking beach goers.

Sharks get a very bad rep you have to get it into your head that its there home and if your in the water you in the food chain there going about there business being a shark .Compared to the amount of people in the water the attack rate is extremely low and most are mistaken identity however there can be the odd rouge that stumbles on to a easy meal .Loved this episode i just wish we had more of a chance to catch them from the beach where i live best we can do are Tope and my best is 45lb .This is coming from a 55 year old surfer living in Wales UK started at your kids age and still going strong. Well traveled round the world and surfed in many shark'y and Crock places always new i was part of the food chain its there home not mine.

A 60-year-old surfer died today after having a leg bitten off by a 3m shark at Kingscliff, on the northern NSW coast.

I caught a 1.5m then a 3m estimate on my kayak at the end of January, the 1.5m was a relatively easy battle but the 3m took a few long runs and towed me 5km offshore before l cut the trace both caught within 1km of the beach a couple of days later while snapper fishing another bronzie chased a snapper right to my kayak, l thought the snapper was going to jump in my yak😉 l often catch sharks mainly while trolling offshore for kings or tuna

Why leave any remnants of a hook in the thing? Instead, why not get a long-handled needle-nose pliers, and remove the hook...instead of just cutting it? You can get pliers that are over a foot in length and have angled jaws. Seems like it would be better for the fish, and safer for you--instead of using the little side cutter on that pliers you had. As it was you had to get within an inch or two of the shark's mouth in order to cut the hook.
A great video, but dare I say that for shark researchers, you sure weren't very prepared when it came time to handling the fish.

If using bronze hooks which he very well could have a hook can actually rust out in 2-3 days, second when coming to sharks you dont use needle-nose pliers 😂😂ether a hook twist releaser or bolt cutters which cut the actual hook not the line allowing it to easily slide out freely as the “J” shape is turned into a straight “I”. After reading your comment I can see it is you who knows nothing about land based shark fishing, and the techniques used to keep the fish as well as yourself safe.
