"We decided that we would never ever buy Dahlias and grow them so we were very reasonable when we bought them... And we bought 80 of them". Now that's my kind of people. Oh, by the way : will you be planting the space in front of your shop with beautiful flowers, to catch your customers' eye ? :D

Bleeding Heart is an "ephemeral" plant, meaning they go dormamt after they bloom. You're not doing anything wrong!
No more dahlias for me either, so I ordered 300.

Phlox is very sustainable to mildew. But it's very right decision to plant the perennials. Some of can blossom even 1 and 2 months and it will be much easier for you. Wish you a good luck in your business! You very hardworking people!

I've always had a great time with monarda as a cut flower. It wilts and stays wilted if I don't cut it either early in the morning or late evening PLUS use a hydrating solution like quick dip.

Serena, I know you want to talk about flowers but I want to comment on your hair. I love your new haircut it looks so cute on you. Last year you struggled with your health a bit (I was worried) and I love how excited you are for this year. All the plants that you are going to grow this season are amazing , with that said you better get a beanie with a flashlight in it so you can plant around the clock because to me it looks overwhelming, sadly my gardening days are what I can get in a couple of containers. But I know you'll get it done you guys are a great team can't wait to see how it goes.

At 65 yrs. young--- I'm 10th yr. farmers market. Themed gardens..garden weddings...floral shops....Now farmers markets. I wish I started flower farming all those yrs. ago. I love it by far more than anything else I've done!!! Much smaller scale for me now....getting hard to do. So enjoy watching ------ keep on blooming---lots of hard work there.! !! That lavender would be fantastic hedge cover along your roadside stand. Here in France it is a typical thing especially for the south and it looks absolutely gorgeous. With the heat and sun all day and attracting attention to the stand, this would be awesome solution.

      Oh!
Maybe you can help me out regarding growing Lavender?!
As someone who knows what the best soil is for Lavender, perhaps you could help me out on this subject!
I live in the center of Texas, I have the right weather for Lavender, but NOT the right soil. I normally have to bring soil in to grow anything bcuz my soil is so rocky, and lots of clay, and basically no top soil. So no matter what, I'll be buying soil to grow Lavender in.
People always talk about growing Lavender in well draining soil, and they like lots of sand.
      Right.
      Got it.
I've tried it a couple of times, but somehow keep getting it wrong...
      Here's my question:
What would you say is the best ratio of sand to loam?
Just HOW MUCH SAND is the right amount?

    • @annathiika5755
      @annathiika5755 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@gardengatesopen we have pretty goopy clay soil here in our area central MN, I’ve had success with amending 8-10” with play sand and compost. My ratios weren’t exact but it was about 30-40% sand and the rest soil with a top dressing of stick/stem relatively coarse compost as a mulch layer. It might help to add something like perlite to increase air into the soil as well. If you get puddling or anything like that, hilling them works really nicely too. I imagine our precipitation patterns are very different but I kinda treat them like succulents, watering only sparsely if at all. I hope the OP gets a chance to chime in as well, I’m very interested in what works in their native environment!

    • @gardengatesopen
      @gardengatesopen 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@annathiika5755 Thank You SO MUCH for your input!!
      That does really help!
I literally cannot dig a hole here bcuz of how many rocks are littered in the soil makeup.
Rocks and boulders of all sizes with only small threads of soil in between.
It's not worth it to dig.
      It's a mess!
Plus, my property barely has any flat, or level surfaces.
      I mean, it LOOKS nice!
Rolling hills and little valleys, with old growth oak trees is a very pretty setting.
But digging isn't going to happen without a bulldozer. And I'm NOT renting a bulldozer anytime soon!
So adding the native soil isn't an option. I'll be buying whatever I need to make a place for the lavender.
Hilling it is a good idea, and probably what I would end up doing.
I've actually done that before, made a nice hill for a small 4" lavender plant, but somehow I failed. Maybe the soil I bought was too rich? Altho, I did mix ½ rich soil with ½ lava sand.
Maybe the sand was too rich too!?
I probably need to start with a larger plant too, one with a bigger root system.
One thing I didn't do was water it too much, I'm a lazy watered!
It all has to be done by hand.
It was a few years ago the last time I tried to grow lavender.
If I remember correctly, we might've had a very wet Spring that year. So maybe it did get too wet? I don't exactly recall...
      Which brings up another point:
Our weather is never the same year to year, or the amounts of rain either. Sometimes we get a lot of rain, even flash floods.
Sometimes we get barely any at all.
So I guess I would have to plan on mixing soil for extremely wet seasons.
Which makes me wonder if I should mix the following:
      1 part soil,
      1 part sand,
      1 part perlite.
Except, this seems like SUCH a dry mix!
During our hot and dusty weather, like it is this Spring, we've barely gotten 2 inches of rain in the last 6 months, and its also been a hot Winter too with some days getting up to 90°, and the next day a cold front brings freezing weather!
      So crazy!
That kind of weather seems like I would be out there watering the lavender every other day!
Did I mention I'm a lazy watered?! ha!
A lot of my yard is survival of the fittest!
I was kinda hoping the lavender would fit into that description too.
Maybe I'll just do a half soil, half sand mix, and buy an umbrella special for the lavender to use during the wet times?!!
      Thanks for the input!

I did that last year, started some perennials in May, after most of my planting was done, and I had a bit more space and time. And then I planted them in the ground in the fall. I know they cost a bit more money to buy the plants, but they also bloom a bit, since they are already a year old, so that helps them to pay for the extra cost. I'm also really good at killing baby plants, lol

I have never grown baptisia but from what I understand it has a long taproot and does not like to be moved. You can buy cloth of gold yarrow seed which is mustard yellow The common white yarrow and the pastel yarrow in seed. Even cherry colored pack of seeds. The cloth of gold has pretty big grey foliage. If u plant that yarrow seed it needs light to grow. Do not cover it. It’s very easy to grow. The Russian sage when cut has a smell like eucalyptus. The grey foliage is another bonus.

Dahlias are always a good idea! Have you considered making small bouquets, say $5 ones for small kids to buy or for someone to put on their desk at the office etc?
You have an amazing assortment of beautiful plants to grow and experiment with. I wish you much success!

Oh my gosh I’m even more excited because I get my first van noort order tomorrow. Thank you for recommending them last year. I ordered a lot, but since it was late I’m only getting just under half of what I wanted. That’s okay, today I got my first shipment today from Jolly Farmer (Lizzie’s and eucalyptus came today) so I’m busy with that considering I still have a foot of snow.
Thanks for sharing your unboxing. I’m really really excited now. Serena you started a bad addiction in me lol

I will definitely order there again in the future.

I understand your reasoning with dahlias. I started growing Canna Lillies a few years ago, stored them in the winters and kept growing them. and because I am a chronic over-waterer, I now have over 300 of them (they love wet places) and I only grow canna now...nothing else...lol....big , bold, lots of dramatic leaves...my neighbors can't stop talking about them. I have to start pre-sprouting this week, or I will never get them ready for May.

Regarding your dahlias, pre-sprout them in pots. Do not water until they're showing. When you plant them in the ground (or a pot), put bone meal in the hole swished around a bit. Since you are quite hot, give them some shade (cloth overhead is fine) in the afternoon. Regular, but deep, water is better than a bit each day. Your blooms will be smaller if: you don't pinch side buds, you don't fertilize with calcium monthly, you have too much nitrogen (use low nitrogen fertilizer), or you plant too close together. I'm in Beaumont, CA where we get up to 109 F (42.8 Celsius) and we are considered hot and arid. My soil is clay with sand and boulders, so I've dug much of it and amended like crazy. Anyway, if your dinnerplate dahlias have smaller blooms, they can be easier to use in bouquets! Love you guys and Serina, you look gorgeous in pink! Edited to add I have only 63 and they're all different varieties (1 of each). You'll get 2 - 15 stems each week per plant.

Last year I used some of my Russian sage in arrangements. (Home gardener so not nearly as knowledgeable as you.) If I used it as a green filler, it lasted much longer. If I waited until it had purple blooms on it, they started shedding very very quickly. I’m excited to see what your experience with it is.
