Hire help. May not get the profit margins, but flowers won't go to waste and you maintain customer bases that are used to seeing your product.

As a business person myself, I know that hiring a person was the last thing I wanted to do. But a smarter business person brought light the benefits of help. Health wise, you just can’t do it all and give the kids the time they need. Your mental status as well suffers with the pressure of producing when you just physically can’t take another step. You either take the leap or drown trying to keep up. Both of you can only do so much in the allotted selling time.

Local agricultural colleges are always looking for student placements. And students are always looking for relevant work. Having help at the busiest time, or when you’re not well or when (gasp) you have to take a break, it will help your business in the long run.

I've suggested Serena host bouquet making classes...I think you could make a good chunk of money off of that. My other idea is that you offer a "bouquet bar" package in which you charge maybe 300 dollars and provide like 6 buckets (or however many would be reasonable/profitable) and set them up at parties with the brown paper and a bucket of snips. At the most basic level, all you have to do is provide the materials and then go back to pick up you buckets. For another 100 dollars Serena could stay for an hour and assist with bouquet making. Flower bars at bachelorette parties and bridal showers are becoming super trendy.

A lot of people commenting seem to forget that Ian is in fact filming and editing this video for us, there is a story to tell and this is a way of still making money. So thanks for the video, both of you :) It's always great to watch a new update on how you and your farm are doing.
As to the question what would I do if I were sick: Probably the same as you in your position, namely take time off to recover (considering you already had a good year in sales). Or, if you would really want to make the most of those lisianthus and bring them to your customers: to hire someone for one or two days to harvest the flowers and put them in the cooler for later use, or even have them arrange everything as well.
Those tomatoes and eggplant look delicious! Bon appétit ;)

There is something about the reality and honesty of your videos that attracts me more than many of the other flower farming videos. Serena is such a trooper regarding her commitment to the farm and realizing your customers need to have a consistent choice of gorgeous bouquets. There is no better way to teach your children a fantastic work ethic then to have them see your passion for success. The way you smile results in an uplifting video that could have come across as a bummer.

Serena, I just loved this vid so much. Not the part where you were sick, but the demonstration of how committed you both are to your farm and business. It's alot of work to be self employed, I was raised in a family with a small business. It's not easy to hire help as others have suggested. A salary for an additinal employee cuts into what may already be very little profit. You two are amazing and your dedication and work ethic is admirable. I'm so happy that your flower stand was selling so quickly for you. Hopefully everyone was paying as they should and you were not being stolen from. I watched a video from Daniele at northlawn flower farm recently where she was experiencing some under payment. So terrible that anyone could think about stealing from or short changing such hard working flower farmers. Hopefully the good outweighs the bad. The fair looked great and so fun! Hope y'all had a great day out with kids. Hope you both are feeling much better now.

One thing I might do is simply bundle the Lizzies into one bouquet.
Only have Lisianthus and a stem or 2 of greenery.
    That's IT.
    Each bouquet,
    all ONE color.
Even Ian can do that! 😉
Having a Special Lizzy Sale in the roadside stand could prove to be quite popular!!!
Probably popular at the market too!!
I know I would buy it!!!
    Heck, during a sick week,
I would probably do that for most every flower!!!
    A Helianthus bouquet,
    A Cosmo bouquet,
    A Marigold bouquet,
    Yeah, you get the idea...

Glad everyone is feeling better. Lots learned this past week, I am sure. Having backup plans...... because sickness happens no matter what is in bloom. Next year, no new projects during harvest/market time. Taking care of plants/harvest and arrangements, kids, home and regular maintenance is more than enough on your plate. Ian can learn (or if he already knows) harvest, stripping foliage off the plants. I It's easy to see how passionate you are about each flower/plant, Serena, but sometimes you just have to let someone else in and share your passion and help. Figure out 2023 budget to hire help during busiest time for flowers harvesting/arranging. And most important, just because you are young, Serena and Ian, you can't burn the candle at both ends and it not catch up with you. Having 4:00AM bedtime is not good or natural.

I had to stop reading the comments to not snark at some of these keyboard warriors who don't understand how much work it is to maintain a farm and a popular TH-cam channel while also parenting two young children! You don't even show the bulk of the labor behind the scenes, focusing instead on the end result of harvesting and selling. Makes it look a LOT easier than it actually is. I'm pretty sure you both are sitting by the pool eating bonbons Sundays through Thursdays! Ya know, cause the flowers just magically appear and all you do is wander about cutting them while "wasting time" filming and editing 🤣 I think the punishment for a rude comment here should be a year of farming, ha ha! Been there and done that recently. Reinjured my back and chores with the farm animals usually take 45 minutes , were taking me 1 1/2 hours to complete. It really does suck when you are sick or injured. I am farming alone and that stress doesn't help my recovery. But it only takes one good thing to happen....like watching humming birds in my pear tree or the sheep surrounding me when I had to sit down and my oldest ram put his head in my lap. I hope you feel better and do what you can.....there is no good reason to push yourself so far that you will make yourself sicker longer. Feel better and take a nap!

Didn’t sound best option at best at that moment. But few years later - I saw her point. Don’t overdue yourself. We turned different way, we didn’t have any options but in the end - it was worth it. I don’t say - that you have give up flower farming or farming in general but give your self break, lower your expectation and give yourself time to heal. So sorry you're sick! I feel so bad that you're suffering! Awww, little Dusty is hanging around near his mommy! Pets know! Those zinnias are huge and gorgeous! Wowie Zowie!!! 4:29 Flower down! Flower down! omg no flower left behind! Serina, I hope you're not pushing yourself too hard. The longer an illness lasts, the worse it is for your body. Leaves you more susceptible to more illness, more severe. I'm sure you feel the pressure to get those bouquets done, but you don't want to wind up pushing those flowers up from underneath!
