I typically won't choose a spot for a base if I can't get clay _relatively_ nearby. I once traveled across a continent over the course of 5 days when starting a new world, living in a small cave near spawn and slowly making my way across the land, gathering berries and materials on the way. Each day I would build a small shack and sleep, then move on. Finally found a place with surface copper, clay, and trees. Across the water I saw the desert and I settled down feeling safe and content. ... Then I made a pottery kiln, started firing my storage vessels in it, turned around for, I shit you not, 40 is seconds as I chopped down a maple tree. Only to turn around to see my entire log house up in flames, because the grass nearby caught fire from the kiln. It was something out of a cartoon, hilarious. I lost a massive stack of firewood inside, which is so fitting and even more funny. My bed and a couple tools survived too. Then it was about to be nighttime What a great game lmao. I fuckin love VS
This looks awesome! My only recommendation would be adding the ability to hitch animals to trees, no one wants to have to place a fence post every time they stop their mount, like you do in minecraft.
@@VintageStory and also that it can swim, I hate that in minecraft it throws you off the mount when you fall into the water, it could be similar to red dead redemption 2 where the mounts can swim while we ride them :P
The detail in this update is crazy. None of these ideas are being implemented just half-way. I love that "good enough" just isn't good enough for this dev team, and they strive for perfection. Can't describe how much I'm looking forward to this update!
Would love to see larger bodies of water and dynamic winds requiring tacking to go upwind. Probably too much to ask for sail management like Sailwind though.
Yeah I'm glad for the base game to have more intuitive controls for those unfamiliar with sailboat mechanics, I bet mods will step up to add things like rigging options and wind behaviour for those who enjoy the detail.
Hoping for ocean update as well, with diving and underwater ruins. Maybe the ability to fill some kind of leather bladders with air for longer dives. Ruins generating airpockets and other things to keep you exploring!

@@cipherstormwolf14 wont lie, a couple updates to the terrain gen adding some water features and a couple more things to make the landformation a tad more realistic would make this game go a long way like having biomes be alot bigger for example, means you can use them more as landmarks, same with rivers
Amazing, two recommendations would be - let us hitch the boat like the animal with rope to keep it in place. - the boat turns and reverses way too quick in my opinion, I hope you slow this down and increase inertia in the final ver.
actually, being able to drag a boat with rope from the shore would be really cool… and it would set up a foundation for implementing wind and rivers as historically, when the environment didn’t cooperate, people just got of and dragged it with a rope
Man, if this also adds a canoe then I will be happy. A very primitive, yet efficient way to get across waters. Little storage to compensate, but ideal for short, early game trips. Either way, I can't wait to have a Princess Mononoke moment riding these fine animals~

Even if they don't have a wind system, there are already a couple mods which do a damn fine job and which will 100% make use of this update to make the boat system even better
in the sailboat guide it says "currently they are just controlled with the movement keys" or something along those lines so that makes me think they will add a wind system
I was playing that other game back in 2010, and was obsessed with it for years. Now it's collecting digital dust on my hard drive because of the amazingness that is Vintage Story. This is the game I've always wanted. That other game has horses and shoe boxes with oars, and now we get rideable deer and sailboats?! 🤯 Maybe consider implementing that one mod that adds variable wind?
for the boat controls i would recommend looking at valhiem and how they have done it, has a sense of realism with how you catch the wind but is still easy enough for anyone to do

This is the one game where I'm always happy to update to the latest version on the spot! Mods will still work regardless of it being a newer version, and all I get are new features, and no dumb "balancing" changes!
oh man mounts are going to really make traversing and finding progression supplies much less of a hassle. the cooking pot holder, the rolled up straw bed, im so excited... the new wolf model and animations too wow! cant wait for my noble steed to get devoured by bears and wolves lol. since we can get the elk from a trader i hope this is a precursor to wolf pup taming someday!
As ever, excited for the next update. I would love to see the ocean take a larger role in Vintage Story, the saltwater mechanic is a great start and these boats take it a step more.
You've really outdone yourself with this one! I'm obsessed with the deer model and animation The sail boat is also something I have been wanting for years. The only thing about it is that it feels just slightly too slow. From what I can tell, the sailboat is going to be a decently expensive item, requiring sails and planks and possibly nails&strips. You wouldn't want it to give you mediocre benefits, being just slightly faster than the raft. So yea, if you dont add a wind system, I would like to see a slight increase in the sailboat's base speed. 😊

I like the progress, always love the work y'all put in. It always makes me so excited for the next release. :D Also a suggestion, I know how much work it can be to make a 3d model so I understand if you can't. But a square sail on such a tiny boat feels a little lost, Perhaps I think not to make it too modern like a stay/gaff combo and keeping a single sail. That a Lanteen style would fit much better, especially with how far forward the mast is and give the boat a little more uniqueness. I should say here too, I love the boat no matter what as I'm always happy to do some more sailing in games. I'm just a sailing nut and I know the main focus isn't on sailing but I thought I'd offer a recommendation. I'm still looking looking forward to the release. :D
Congrats on getting all those systems to work! Especially the mount and rope I know was not easy but you managed it after all! 👍 Also I hope this is just the first step and that eventually there will be ships as well. (wishful thinking maybe) Thinking of an under-the-deck storage area, a room on the ship as your personal quarters and a bit of space on deck for whatever else you wanna use it for. Using the ship as a moving base for all the nomads in the VS community. :)

Also when will you add flying birds? also swinging a sword from the side instead of from the top would be better for riding by attacks and can you use a spear as a lance as they did in 1066?
The reason I barely used mounts in Minecraft was that forests leaf blocks make forests basically impassible unless you get on top of the trees (less of a problem in vintage story because the trees tend to be a little more spaced out). Another thing was having issues crossing small rivers. I know Vintage Story likes to follow real life and Elk are good swimmers (and apparently divers?) but you know, shouldn't be at the speed of the boat, just that they CAN cross water. A huge reason in Minecraft was that you fall into a surface lava pit and your horse is gone forever (lava doesn't seem to be an issue in that respect in VS however). So for the most part, the swimming thing, maybe test climbing slightly inclined hills too.
I think this is a pretty good update, I created my first real world this month. I have played on it like 50 hs, and I think that the most annoying thing is travelling. Even getting to a Translocator feels slow. This will help a lot to fix that problem.
This is so cool! Also I have a suggestion about boats: add rivers to the world generation, maybe make them intersect or even lead to the ocean! But overall amazing stuff!
I can picture Steve waking up cold sweating in the middle of the night after this one. Damn, this game is everything I wanted from a true survival sandbox.

Hello Vintage Dev's! Love the new rideable deers and horses, and the new sailboats you're adding ⛵. But I would like to make a suggestion, changing the sail from a Square Mast, to a Four and Aft rigged sloop styled Mast. It would look very cool, and be more realistic to other small sailboats 😄.
Man very excited. If I ever get the time to learn to mod this game again I would be interested in create a "From the other block" mod which would be items from game that can't be named but in a vintage story style, eg. Minecarts would be large, have handles on bothsides for push and pulling and would require casting but then would look at adding other things like rails with switches like the create mod's trains, chained rails for hill and even minecart linking. Whist I am at it, please add rivers and water wheels :P
Boats will probably be really hard to build, so rafts will be the main water transportation for quite a while. It's one of the great things about this game: getting stuff done takes time and effort, unlinke Minecraft were you can achiev midgame in the first couple minutes (full iron gear) and late-game in an hour or two. I've been modding Minecraft for years trying to achiev what Vintage story does out of the box.Wish Mojang would turn their survival mode into a real survival experience, as currently it's too barebones. And it's not like those more in-depth mechanics couldn't be tweaked in the options menu to acommodate the people that enjoy what Minecraft currently offers.

Maybe you Need to assemble like how you put the "optionals" on It every time you have to move It. Also this makes me think that even the biggest body of water in VS are still surrounded by Land and are basically huge lakes, so at some point you Will have to take your boat back? Or maybe they Will change the world generation to make oceans and rivers and lakes all connected so boat Is more usefull for exploration?

You should take a look at the already in-game rafts! They're cheap, obtainable early game, and easily storable.

There’s no reason to ever start a new world. Just move to a new area of your map

This is so cool! Also I have a suggestion about boats: add rivers to the world generation, maybe make them intersect or even lead to the ocean! But overall amazing stuff!

There is a wind system in the game as far as I remember? Maybe that can dictate how fast the boat can go, on a very rudimentary level?
Wind only blows in one direction

Hello Vintage Dev's! Love the new rideable deers and horses, and the new sailboats you're adding ⛵. But I would like to make a suggestion, changing the sail from a Square Mast, to a Four and Aft rigged sloop styled Mast. It would look very cool, and be more realistic to other small sailboats 😄.

If I ever get the time to learn to mod this game again I would be interested in create a "From the other block" mod which would be items from game that can't be named but in a vintage story style, eg. Minecarts would be large, have handles on bothsides for push and pulling and would require casting but then would look at adding other things like rails with switches like the create mod's trains, chained rails for hill and even minecart linking.
Whist I am at it, please add rivers and water wheels :P

now that we have boats, rafts have pretty much lost their purpose. I guess you guys have to add rivers now 🤗
Boats will probably be really hard to build, so rafts will be the main water transportation for quite a while. It's one of the great things about this game: getting stuff done takes time and effort, unlinke Minecraft were you can achiev midgame in the first couple minutes (full iron gear) and late-game in an hour or two.
I've been modding Minecraft for years trying to achiev what Vintage story does out of the box.Wish Mojang would turn their survival mode into a real survival experience, as currently it's too barebones. And it's not like those more in-depth mechanics couldn't be tweaked in the options menu to acommodate the people that enjoy what Minecraft currently offers.

Maybe you Need to assemble like how you put the "optionals" on It every time you have to move It.
Also this makes me think that even the biggest body of water in VS are still surrounded by Land and are basically huge lakes, so at some point you Will have to take your boat back?
Or maybe they Will change the world generation to make oceans and rivers and lakes all connected so boat Is more usefull for exploration?
I remember seeing this game for the first time and thinking “this is just heavily modded Minecraft”
