I've seen people do the same thing on a jobsite we were on,and they did a great job! We were hired to strip off the old paint on all the wood work on everything except the floors! The owners wanted everything to look like it did when it was built, except 1 room that he had locked up like Fort Knox! It was a pain, but I enjoyed doing it! He gave away all the newer kitchen cabinets, stove, fridge etc. and put old/new stuff in it too! RICH MAN. LOL

The potential client asked if I could recommend another company,I did. They went with who I referred them to. ( I called the owner of the company who I gave the info to the potential client and let him know they might be getting a call and what the situation was)The owner of the company called me about a month later and asked why I passed on the job. I told him something wasn't sitting right with me during the time I was speaking with them and going through my process for an estimate. Well those people are holding the final 1/3 payment because they don't want the back paver porch to have a 1 inch slope for water drainage. Now he had to put a lien on them. Sometimes it's better to walk away.
@dh5516 its called refusing due to liability. Customers complain about quality all the time even though you let them know what will happen. Rather not deal with a future headache.
Actually adding history and charm in my perception. Others it will drive nuts that patch being off. O have been patched up myself plenty with physical and mental scars. I can appreciate it l, identifying with it.

Wood is hard to match. You are 110% spot on. I do wood gunstocks and 3 pieces of birch (1950s NOS) has its own personality or irritations, sometimes on the same piece. 3 days of labor and it looked great. Its why I use alcohol based stain as its easier to "adjust".
Been there more than once.That is alot of work but feels good when the customer is handing you your money with a big smile of his face telling you he has a couple friends that want a bid.❤❤
i have a high respect for good,dedicated hardwood floor installers like this one,doing this for a living sacrificing their knees and backs to give the customer the best results.

I did this once. My dad showed me how to do it. The coolest restoration project I’ve done yet. We reclaimed matching wood from a bedroom and patched a 4x4 foot hole in the living room. The only place you could tell was the last board that required top nails. Even those were hard to spot. Real craftsmanship. Anyone can do it, you just need to see it done right and it completely makes sense. Thanks dad!

For a while, you’ll look for it, then it will disappear. Someone will occasionally notice it in the right light, but by the time it needs a touch up on the finish, it will be pretty hard to see without kneeling. Very nice work. The other guys missed out on a job that they would get some good referrals from (you’d better, it looks great).
Truly a master of your craft. Soo cool that your integrity matches the mighest quality as your craftsmanship. I mean you really could have over bid the job and really cleaned up, but your honesty and integrity wouldnt even entertain that idea. Definitely a beautiful job.
In my experience, the hard part is finding new flooring that is milled to precisely the same profile as the old. A difference of 1/16" in width, or as little as 1/64" variation in the location of the T&G can cause huge problems.
I believe there are woodworkers who are good at their craft. And then there are Craftsman who are great a their wood working. You are one of the latter. Your quality speaks volumes! Kudos! 👍🏻😊
The color in the wood comes from the minerals that is soaks up from the ground. so different distributors get wood from different regions so the minerals the the trees soak up are different. And if you see any really dark spots in the wood it’s mineral streaks/deposits
@@Fnberg744 that’s actually not true in most cases that only happens when the floor wasent taken care of I’ve sanded floors that are a hundred years old and guess what it looked like brand new wood that just got installed becasue the floor was taken care of and I’ve been in house that have floors that are 10 to 20 years old and they look older then the 100 year old floor so the age dosent matter. It’s all about the region where the wood is procured.its different for wood that stays out side becasue it deals with the elements
Thanks! Yep, we want to be fair to our client and give them a great floor. If it was a situation that they thought they wouldn't be happy with the floor not matching exactly, then replacement would be an option, but only then.
Just make sure when the family member asks you tell them it looks like that because you couldn't afford a full replacement. I personally can tell quickly. But I grew up painting cars after repairs. Lots of guys want just the panel damaged painted and not a proper blend of thr surrounding panels. If you want to save money take out a few of the next row of boards as well. Randomly choose them so then the blend isn't at the same level but much further apart. Then you could never tell even if pointed out. But it is noticeable. Most won't but people who do this will see almost immediately.

I had over 2,000 sq ft of cherry floor repaired and refinished about 2 years ago. The folks who do this work are amazing. You did an outstanding job! Beautiful! The guys who passed?? Losers.
Wow! Beautiful! We bought a house with pine floors in most of the downstairs. We decided to take up carpeted dining room and tiled kitchen and put in pine floors. We were told that although it was the same kind of food, the newer pine is softer. We were good with that. Looks great to us!
As long as the customer understands the wood color won't be 100% the same as the original and you write it in the contract you're good. Very nice work!

I have worked in marquetery and flooring for years and my father did that for decades at the highest level since he refloored a few rooms in Versailles (i'm french) and he would have hired you on the spot. This is not so much about the great job you did with the matching of colours, but rather the precision of your work and your attention to details. That's really the quality that anyone paying for a job should expect and should receive. I studied wood craftsmanship in Japan for a few years and i remember a hanging scroll on the wall of the atelier we were taught things, and it said in Japanese "Perfection is a bare minimum, you must aim higher". Looks like you didn't even need to study in Japan. Very impressive.

For such a repair wood flooring job , the cost to make it good again could be expensive. Expansion and contraction of natural wood on the floor can happen anytime if normal wood glue is used. The curing period of a new wood flooring takes about 3 weeks before sanding and varnishing. Anyway , this flooring really looks good & brand new . 5 stars bro.
I'm a journeyman carpenter and hardwood floorman from the 1980s turned Architect. That floor company that turned the job down either didn't have the experience or flat out didn't want to do the job. Stain the floor and the new and old will pretty much blend together like you show. At least this was a 3/4 T&G job. Back in the day I dealt with a lot of 3/8" old old oak floors. A couple jobs was hand scraped and hand sand because the sanding machines would have chewed up too much of the remaining wood.
I respect craftsmen who come look at a job and then tell me they can't do it. I rather have that than a bad job. I have called the very same craftsmen back and gave them other work that they can do as a reward for their honesty. Craftsmen who ghost me, never get called again.

other contractor has probably had customers that say they understand and are ok with it then withhold payment. So he just doesn't risk that anymore

That's exactly why the contractor passed on it. It can take an inordinate amount of time to match things perfectly, and nobody will pay for that.

And age. Old wood looks older. New wood looks newer. Regardless of minerals
