Your videos are really strong. I am a Greek Australian, lived almost 10 years in the island of Crete. Your pictures are incredible and very emotional. I can't believe how close to my experience yours is !!! The picture of the yiayia filtering the olives and Katina shaking the olive trees with that device , brought tears in my eyes. That's the best job in the world. The most rewarding. Thank you from my heart! Kisses from Australia !!! XXX
So glad to hear that and thank you for the kind words! We felt we’d connect well with Greek’s around the world and that is a big reason we are sharing these stories, tell your Greek friends 🇬🇷Also, we go deeper into the olive scene in our Rethymno episode
Siesta as you call it (that by the way, no Greek calls it like that) is something that is happening that follows the schedule of the market. Meaning that small businesses are closed from 14:30 -17:30. Bigger business, shopping malls, and all the rest of professionals like lawyers, accountants, architects, tutors, people who work in offices and of course coffee shops, tavernas etc continue working for 8 hours minimum. We may go outside for our lunch break but we come back to continue working. Greeks are among the most hard working people in Europe. So, the market is one thing and the rest of professionals is another. Don’t confuse the two, please!
🇬🇷🇬🇷🇬🇷we love Greece! If you haven’t check out our playlist of Becoming Greek episodes where we showcase the beauty, people and culture of this country
Nice Vid and mostly to the point. If you are planning to stay here in Greece, you should consider to learn the language. Not easy, i know, but you can learn a few sentences at first and continue forward. If you think the locals are friendly now, you will be surprised of how much warmer they will become after the see that you are trying to communicate in their language!
We consider it really rude to bring us the bill if we hadn't asked for it. It's like they are telling you to live. A restaurant dinner is expected to last about two hours and a complimentary desert is usual.
I wonder how most tourists haven't complained about the time difference. What do I mean? For most Europeans and Americans, the night starts at 18:00 or 19:00 when we still drink our afternoon coffee. Meanwhile, when we mean evening, we mean from 21:00 onwards...
That’s true. I don’t think everyone embodies that lifestyle but it is interesting. For dining often it is the tourists early and the locals late, especially during the season. I know a lot of locals who eat 1 large meal a day and it’s late at night. I also know a few locals who still eat 3 meals a day though
That's so weird 😅 good to know though.. it reminds me of my recent trip to Newfoundland in Canada. The indoor plumbing situation is hilarious. Thanks for the Great videos 😌
Thank you for following! We take quality indoor plumbing, HVAC and other luxuries for granted in many countries around the world but it’s not the standard
00:17 - The reason that you are not able to flush the paper down the toilet, is because the septic tank will fill-up faster and need to be emptied more often. - The small size of the pipes which is given often as the reason is not true ! The septic tank is only 5 meters away and will not become plugged !
Maybe in the region where you live, but in bigger cities the size of the pipes is the reason. I live in Athens in a relative new building and flushing stuff down the toilet does not clog the building's pipes but it did once clog the public pipe down the road bringing us a notice to be more careful in the future or they would impose a fine.
You are tourists and you talk about tourists or people on vacation and you generalize this by saying that the pace of life here was slow. Have you met Greeks in their work to see 12 and 15 hours of intensive daily work? sure not. You wanted to make a video and you thought you learned everything about Greece during your vacation. OK. typical American review.
So we are not tourists but in this particular video we did make it for people who don’t know what to expect when coming to Greece. That is different than our other content. We know many Greeks, the hours people work, especially seasonally. It’s still way different than America, which is the point. We didn’t say, move to Greece and get a job because that is one of the biggest issues in the country. Americans are one of the few cultures who work more hours a year than Greeks but at least they are better compensated but, they are, way more stressed and more at danger of losing everything they own because Americans live in debt and that creates a lot of issues. Greeks should be better compensated for their work
You find plenty of hospitality in America (maybe not so much genuine hospitality on the corporate level), I’ve travelled many countries and Greece is just the most hospitable that I’ve been to by a mile.
@@becoming_greek I have done business in Greece. Greeks are liars, thieves, lazy and they think the world owes them a living. The Greeks have been ripping off their government and the government of Greece has not only ripped off the people off Greece, but lied to get into the EU. This has been going on since 1972 when I first started visiting Greece. Greece is now for sale and the world is buying. China has now entered the market of buying property in Greece. Greeks will become homeless and penniless. And they only have themselves to blame. Love the country, the people, not so much.
The climate is always changing, we had the ice age and the climate changed without human intervention. If you genuinely care about the environment talk about the contaminated water supply forcing billions of people to use plastic water bottles, destroying the planet. The climate change narrative has been developed to distract people from noticing the true polluters on Earth. Coca Cola is the largest manufacturer of plastic bottles. If you genuinely care about the planet call out the large corporations contaminating the world’s water supply and then profiting from their solutions, ie plastic water bottles.
Electricity is expensive in Greece, so we conserve. We don't keep the water heater on 24 hours, for example, or we might turn off the oven during the last ten minutes of cooking. Also, depending where we live, it might not be possible to turn on many big appliances at the same time without causing the power to cut. As for A/C, most people I know don't really like it and use it only in extreme cases.
@@becoming_greek I mean it's shocking Americans are surprised by these things which are perfectly normal in the rest of the world. The selfishness and gluttony of the US threatens us all.
Ha, I have mixed feelings on this and I think they do too. They really have the strongest culture I’ve experienced in Greece as well as Greek pride but also strong Cretan pride
@@becoming_greek I have spoken with many Cretans about this. They all have agreed with me that they should in private but will never openly admit it. Try it, it just might surprize you.
In relation to the toilet paper and the small pipes. I was first in Greece in 1972. You could not flush paper then. 52 years later Greece has done NOTHING! to fix it. I visit Greece regularly and refuse to not flush the toilet paper. In 2023 when I was there there was heavy rain, so much that the sewage came back up the pipes into the streets. Perhaps it is time Greece stepped into the 22nd century.

Sadly I don’t know if this will change anytime soon, I can’t imagine the manpower it would take to update this across Greece, especially on many islands.. obviously I think many of us would be happy if they did update it
@@becoming_greek Never going too happen. Forget the man power, Greeks are lazy. It is Albanians that are doing all the work. And the reason they are using Albanians is because they can pay them less and make more money to line their own pockets. Greece is broke.
