My wife and I are just finishing up a month on Crete. What a wonderful place it is to visit in October. My wife has family on the island and we have had the time to visit many wonderful small villages. We understand your decision to stay another year!l
Crete is truly amazing and so glad that you guys got the chance to visit many of the small villages. My first time visiting Crete I didn’t do that and that certainly is one of the more charming parts of the island
I would suggest you to go for a week in Epirus, until the end of November (Zagorochoria, Vikos gorge, stone bridges, Acheron river, Sivota, Parga and so many others). At Christmas 3 days in Pelion, in spring around the Peloponnese (Ancient Olympia, Epidaurus, Nafplio, Ancient Messina, Lake Doxa, Voidokoilia beach, Dimitsana, Mycenae, Kalamata, Monemvasia, Mani, Acrocorinth castle, Methoni...). Summer in Macedonia (Chalkidiki, Dion, Pella, Thessaloniki, Pozar baths, Kastoria, Prespes lakes, Olympus, Platamonas, Edessa, Philip's tomb in Vergina...) It's not just the islands, Greece is the bride and the islands bridesmaids!
Great suggestions! We have been to some of these places. Most of Katina’s family is from the Koroni so we’ve traveled the Peloponnese (still need to do Mani which is high on our list), love Parga and Nafplio that you mentioned. Also love Ionnina, Nemea, Meteora, etc but we still haven’t made it to Thessaloniki. I’m not sure if you’ve seen our episodes traveling the Greek islands but you’re right in that there are so many places to see on the mainland too.
What an itinerary you propose! Bravo.👏 We have visited Greece many times over 19 years but mostly to many islands in Cyclades. Which we ❤. But this year we took our motorhome through Epirus and the Peloponnese. WOW! 😱 Just beautiful. Different. I've copied your list as a bucket list.🇬🇷 Efcharistó. 🙏
Your videos are top notch. Extremely professional! It feels like i am watching a documentary-promo for Crete. Very nice put together, nice chill music, seamless, smooth transitions. Love it
Thank you! It’s definitely what I think we can bring that is different. I am a filmmaker by trade and have a video production company in the states. Do you watch our videos traveling the islands? What kind of content do you want to see more of? Mostly I ask because we started this channel for to show the beauty and culture of different places in Crete but are definitely noticing TH-cam pushes our vlogs talking about life on Crete much harder
@@becoming_greek Oh well it explains a lot why the videos are such high quality! I think you should expand to more of Greece and if you are travel junkies everywhere you travel in the world actually, why not haha, i can enjoy your videos alot cause they are infromative, easy to watch, contain rich and meaningful information, not just on a surface level. The narrative story telling style you both do combined with the background very spectacular in quality AND quantity imagery and videos conveys very successfully all the information a viewer of most types could need about the places in your videos. The passion for filmmaking really shows and its delivered in a calm serene yet fullfilling style. Also what i pointed out before is that you have extremely many images and videos which are pleasant to viewers so much you could split them in more videos and STILL be extremely rich fullfilling videos
I do not really know why it pushes more videos about crete. I guess its like the most popular along santorini maybe corfu as island travel destinations and most interesting for videos cause of the variety of things, also maybe titles like living in ... or my life in.... can be more interesting and kind of unique for people rather than a plain '1 week in Crete'. But i really have no other idea other than that
@@PanethGian I find that very interesting too. The algorithm seems the stuff we do about Crete more that the rest as well as the vlogs. Its kind of a shame because the stuff we put so much into IS exploring Greece but seeing as the results come from localized things I think we will need to lean into what works but still traveling around where we can to show the beauty and culture. I will say that at least Crete has plenty of that to show around the island
I agree with the comments about your great film making skills. This video just popped up in my recommendation feed. And being about living in Greece I jumped to view. Definitely not unhappy. What a gorgeous location! Stunning. I subscribed. Much looking forward to seeing the rest of your videos. What I really like are tge inserted shits, underwater, the dancing. This video isn't just "talking heads". Thanks for the work put in. Glad I found your channel. ❤️
You would definitely enjoy some great regions on the mainland: Vikos Gorge and Zagorohoria, Karpenisi area, Mount Olympus, Pelion Peninsula (Tsagarada, Fakistra beach).......all very green with forests and alpine mountains
Perfect recap of your one year Crete-versary, congratulations! You have shown me so many amazing places to visit, eat and dance, and I truly appreciate all of the research and time that went into this. Cheers to your next year of adventures!
Just spent over two weeks near Rethymno with my partner and made the decision to move there at some point in the near future from Germany! Your videos definitely inspired us.
Thank you for your feedback, we love The Durrells! Corfu is the greenest island of Greece because of its microclimate and the venetians, who brought olive trees to Corfu, started neglecting them and let them overgrow and grow while. This changed the climate to be so humid and green versus the rest of Greece. As far as our channel, we have done a 2 videos in Corfu and another on traveling Greece (when to fly) but overall it’s difficult for us to prioritize videos there since it’s so far from where we live and we like to focus on what makes each place different than the rest of Greece. In Corfu, that really is it’s unique and beautiful Corfu town and the musical soul of the island. I do believe the amount of animals on the island isn’t the same as it was back in the late 1930s when the Durrells took place. Personally I think the outdoors nature on Corfu is beautiful but not as good or unique as other places in Greece like Crete. Have you been able to visit Corfu? It’s an amazing place
I also refer to Larry Durrell a couple of times in our series as I see him as a bit of an inspiration. An artist who travels the islands trying to learn from Greeks and draw inspiration from what he has learned. Something like the book he wrote “Greek Islands”
@@becoming_greek Oh wow! Thank you for the comprehensive reply. It's so easy to think about a place and have an idea about it, without seeing it! - Greece is on our travel list, so I'll be sure to watch a lot more of your videos before we go. We're hoping to spend a few months there :) Thanks again!
I’m sure you’ll love Greece and amazing that you’ll have time to really experience it! If you’re looking for inspiration of where to go that’s I think where we specialize in showing what’s different and unique in each place.
It’ll be cool but it’s actually better than in March which will be the coldest it is all year. The closer to January the more clouds, rain, wind but there are still quite a few nice days in November. Check Poseidon.hcmr.gr for wind and waves before planning your visit to distant beaches
Love your channel! 🤩 we are looking at the golden visa and staying in Greece for half the year but there is so many islands.. any tips on how to find our island? We are a nomadic family with 3 young kids!
Honestly, this a complicated question. There are so many options. With the new Golden Visa rules only small islands qualify for the €400,000 Euro investment and then islands with populations with 3000 or more now have an €800,000 requirement. Those small islands are beautiful too but obviously a much different lifestyle than a big island, without access to much medical, fast travel, etc and many times everything closes in winter months. Since you want to live there 6 months of the year, this might not concern you but if you do want year round life the islands to look at are typically Crete, Rhodes, Corfu, Evia, Syros, Naxos, Kos, Chios, Kefalonia, Aegina.. and of those only the first 6 still have much community. Beyond that advice I’d say come explore your top options before investing and we also do private consultations if you need specific advice. We don’t handle anything legal but can at least tailor advice based on our experiences. Where are you from?
Totally get you, it’s worth it but the red tape does make things slow and difficult to make long term decisions. Slowly slowly. I own a video production company in Atlanta, GA. I produce and coordinate things remotely but I do go back for my 2 busiest stints of the year, basically end of January until Mid March and late October/early November. I capture a lot of music festivals at sea so lucky for me my work is very saturated at that time of year and it gives me more flexibility from April to October.
To be honest that’s a difficult question. Do you want something with year round life? Peaceful or lively? Somewhere with a lot of Greek culture or more touristy? How long are you looking to live in Crete and are you looking to buy or rent? Do you want to live close to a city? Do you need good internet access? It really depends on what you’re looking for. It’s not easy to find places for long term rental or purchase everywhere so a lot of it will depend on that but I do suggest visiting first and spending time in some of your top spots as the answer isn’t the same for everyone.
I would say it’s a little different as people realize that we aren’t just here for a while. To be honest I think that has for the most part people are a bit more genuine and opens the door for potential friendships. There are exceptions to that and since Katina is Greek American that helps but there are a lot of people who appreciate the sentiment that you have selected the island to live on. I do think some places are harder than others though
@@becoming_greek I can imagine, which is why I asked. I think the Greek hospitality is partly genuine, partly by profession - especially during the holiday summer season. Which makes sense. I guess one more question - the sentiment in EU and US is becoming increasingly hostile towards immigration. Does this also play a part on Crete where they want to keep Crete for the Cretans? Or do they welcome foreigners for income / shortages etc.
There is a shortage of affordable housing, so they don't really like people from other countries buying real estate. Driving the prices up. But as far as I know/feel there is no real hate. They won't express it to your face anyway. They don't like the American military base, for some reason they feel that the usa does allot of bad in the world. Which might be true but their presence in EU and anywhere else protects them from real evil countries which I don't have to name.
Every situation is different and the only thing I’d say is to ask a Greek accountant about your situation. It’s above my head to be honest so I just try to trust the professionals
Depends if you are resident, depends if your own country has an tax agreement so you won't be taxed twice. I am sure you can just work here (on your blog or other digital work you bring with) and don't pay tax, the problem is that if you want to go for permanent residency you have to show you worked and paid tax for 5 years. But it is all complicated because many situations are different. And the law changes constantly.
Greetings beloveds. I'm Mary from Australia. Half Greek/Lithuanian. I speak Greek and went twice. Love it. Love your videos too. My husband and I have a channel on Bit Chute called JESUS IS LORD. There are many videos free unmonetized to bless you both. God bless you.
I understand you guys want to make positive video but crete is a bore to live on compared to western cities. So it's for most people very boring, very fast, who come from big western cities. The food is boring, very little variety. Crete is wonderful and magic for holidays but for the rest zzzzzz.
Obviously to each his own. Of course you find more variety in big western cities but it’s also typically more bland and not as good (at no fault of the chefs, better ingredients = better food). Also, we can find just about every variety on Crete we wish to, while sure they aren’t in abundance you’d be surprised as to how much exists and how good it is. Obviously there is a trade off on the amount of things to do but stress is one major difference as in western cultures work stress, high expenses, etc are a big issue
And yet some people like myself who have lived in San Francisco, London, and Berlin are looking for a big break from all the hustle. I think it depends on where you’re at in life.
@@TinyEpicsyes, I totally agree. It so depends on what one wants from life. Big cities today are anonymous, unfriendly, crowded, divided, not fun. Smaller villages still have a sense of old fashioned community.
