Hi! Last year, I used some of your videos to help me practice the Texas all-state region auditions. Do you think you could post some videos of you playing the audition material for this year?
I’ve been playing oboe since 1965. One, maybe two contemporary pieces in all those years had a musical marking for flutter tonguing. It’s a horrible sound for oboe, naturally. It’s simply a sound effect. Intonation and tone are difficult for most, but can easily be done of course. The explanation of the tongue fluttering on the tip of the teeth is a bit strange, to begin the exercise. So be it. I would urge young oboists to have fun with it however even most conductors for young people would not even make the command for the young oboist. :-) Flutists however... hehe Flutter tonguing is a common musical marking. An example would be in Tchaikovsky‘s Nutcracker Ballet.. It should not intimidate the young oboist, however since I’ve even experienced witnessing flutists who’ve had difficulty with the technique. Make sure your oboe is always sealing well. Always be in search of the performance reed that provides effortless stability, response, dynamic range, and tone that will turn heads with admiration and thankfulness that there is a fine oboist complementing the instrumental choir you are involved with. One fine performance reed is very good to have, but always have more than that one! Why? Because. You’ll always be given solos. Always! Be proud that you’re of the few, and practice!
This has been the most helpful flutter tonguing video for me! Thank you so much!!!
Preparing Roxburgh’s Antares, this is super helpful for me. Thanks so much! Any chance you can try throat type flutter tongue too?😄
