    Top tip: change the playback speed to 1.25x to counteract the plodding narration. That said, very interesting video!

    Wild how much electronics and tech have changed in a relatively short amount of time...
    I don't think any of us "normal" track day riders would actually be able to rider a motoGP bike. No matter have good you _think_ you might be... the crazy set up on these bikes - and the power and complexity of these machines is mind bending!

      actually a motogp bike is very easy to use, for one used to normal bike (very light, fast to change direction, instant brake, transmit a lot of sensation to the pilot, ecc). The hard part is to compete and go to the limit. Imho if you are a normal track day rider, you can use a motogp with out any problem, ans stay at 15 seconds from a motogp rider

      You might be surprised, I'd imagine they are quite a lot easier to ride than you think. Fagan on 44 teeth rode some BSB bikes recently and he said the 240hp superbike was a hell of a lot easier to ride than the superstock version.

      From what I understand the hardest thing to get used to with a MotoGP bike are the tires and the brakes. According to Randy Mamola the way the brakes are on the modern GP bikes is simply in another universe.

    Nice to see EXUP valves being used, same as YPVS in the 500 era 2 strokes. I am not sure who invented the first powervalve, but I think Yamaha was probably the first main stream manufacturer to really maximise it in the 1990. Giving the bike a lovely low rev range power boost.

      YPVS effectively changed port timing (similar to variable valve timing in a 4 stroke) nothing to do with EXUP

    Great topic, always wonder about them. Make another video on why the 2 pipes, explain why on the right side and one below the seat, explain why not both under the seat. Give contrast to SC Project versus Suzuki Akro versus Ducati versions, etc. And MotoGP pipes versus WSB pipes and SS ones.

    To hear them live at full throttle few meters away from the tarmac is something mind blowing, gives you shivers thru the spine 😇 Can't compare it to the TV sound, obviously... Talking about the exhaust & engine noise combined, IMO Honda and Yamaha have the most ear friendly vanilla sound, less noisy then Ducati that growls a death metal baritone deep. Suzuki sounds quite an enjoyable high pitch soprano. Can't remember the Aprilia sound, but most of them all, I like the KTM, that delivers an outrageous metallic sound - just by hearing it you can almost see all the engine parts moving, pistons/valves/clutch/chain running, Q: Do you like music? A: I do, but not at 33/45 rpm but 15 000+ rpm heavy metal 🏁😁😇💪👂

Super staza za ogled uživo, malena toliko da ako staneš na travi možeš okom pratiti skoro polovinu staze, ravnjak kao brze i spore krivine 👍Gdje su ona vremena, kad smo Tomosom pošli za Grobnik na YU Grand prix... 😥

    Great explanation Simon.
    When I was 16 I put a micron pipe on my fizzy expecting the biz (from 50cc?). It resulted in lots of noise and little else, unless you wanted to annoy the neighbours. None the less I thought I was the bees knees. I'm glad to no longer be 16. 😆

    Cool, so their cutting edge design is an exhaust brake from a diesel truck and some expensive metals that are fit for purpose.
    I wanted to know about merge lengths, pipe lengths, pipe diameters, muffler design and what the perforated sheeting blocking half the exhaust tip is about.

      The honeycomb grill is a gravel screen, quite literally for stopping big lumps getting into the pipe. The tip over switches don't cut in for a little bit in a crash, and with limited engines in a season, losing one to a piece of gravel wouldn't be ideal.

    I thought Servo Valves were useless. My catalytic converter had a decat and it started rusting so i replaced it with a full set of akrapovic headers, the Servo motor/valve was obviously removed now it's straight pipe basically. But i haven't noticed anything bad when it comes to performance after i had it tuned.

      Servo Valves are useful if you are a professional rider trying to get that last 0.100 seconds on the track. Not in the road making corner entries braking from far away very comfortably. Plus Servo Valves in road bikes are there to control the noise and emissions also.

      It's not the same for roadbikes. On these their purpose is to eliminate noise at a specific moment where the bikes measured for the Euro standards etc.
      The fool the systems.

    They certainly refined the exhaust since the four strokes first hit the tracks. They sounded terrible but now they are music to the ears. F1 cars were the same when they changed engines.
    Good video was great to see the bikes up close!
    I raced a Supersport machine with titanium headers and Yoshi muffler it added instant horsepower in a class where bikes had to remain basically stock only suspension and exhaust mods allowed.

    Is the valve invented by Yamaha? used to ride a FZR400RR in 1990 with EXUP system, was only 20 and it was the 2nd 400cc bike, 1st was FZ400, so not sure of the advantage

    I'm trying to get into MotoGP and have some questions regarding it. How many races per season? How many teams and riders per team? Any minor leagues or development levels? How are riders selected? How are points awarded? How is a race weekend like, that is, practice, qualifying and race? Specific rules and regulations? Popular stars, past or present? Thanks in advance.

      Around 20 races per year (21 next year). Two riders per team, right now there are 11 teams if Im not mistaken. There are Moto3 and Moto2 (quite like F2 and F3, but Moto2 and 3 are world championships). Two FPs on friday and another 2 on saturday, followed by quali. Q1 for 12 slowest rider in combined FP time, Q2 for 10 fastest rider+2 fastest rider in Q1 (12 in total). Rossi is the most popular rider imo.

    I've said this last year, Akrapovic or any other exhaust maker doesn't have anything to do with MotoGP exhaust except sponsoring the team and placing a sticker on their bikes. Consider this, do you think any manufacturer would be willing to send Akrapovic their MotoGP prototype for building, testing and dyno tuning? Another example, when Honda was one of the first on the grid to have a seamless transmission even the Repsol crew were not allowed to view it. Honda had two or three HRC transmission engineers at the races and only they were allowed to touch it behind secrecy even from their own team.

      Of course they do, it is drawings and models sent to Akrapovic and they send back the complete part. All those race teams are relatively small organizations, the cost of in-house prototype casting and machining is exponentially more expensive than outsourcing the 10 or 20 parts they need for the year

      @@johnteahan2333 Except PokerPariah is absolutely right. None of these GP teams whether small or big organizations matter in these context. The bikes are all essentially manufacturer "factory" prototypes anyway. All the exhausts are in house units, how else would they go through multiple variations to test on their own dynos. And don't even joke about the cost of prototype casting and machining of parts. This is MotoGP not some national championship. The manufacturers are routinely casting their own prototype frames/swingarms/parts/ multiple times a year to get even the last tenth or that extra bit of stability/braking/acceleration advantage. It's just sponsored stickers on bike manufacturer exhausts. No matter which sponsor on Honda RCV, Arrow (LCR) or SC (Repsol), its the same damn exhaust HRC makes. The look and welds always gives it away. Same goes for Yamaha or any other team for that matter.

    Why two of the V engines (Ducati and Aprilia) don't have this kind of mesh at the end of the exahust, whereas all the inline 4 + Honda (V4) feature it? Anybody knows?

    My Super Duke has this type of valve on its exhaust as well. I thought it was only to reduce noise to pass regulations. But I doubt it fulfills the same function as in MotoGP.

      Μy 2003 gixxer 1000 has an exhaust valve also.But now i wonder why every aftermarket exhaust doesn't have it and why even when they put only an aftermarket can they dissable the exhaust valve..

      It does help with low rev power delivery, and it does help a little with braking, but for streetriding these things aren't anywhere near as important as in racing.

      From what I heard yes, teams which have a different exhaust brand (like Honda with SC-Project) apparently still take the exhaust from Akrapovic, but due to the sponsor, but on a different decal.

    Can anyone explain to me why among all other clearly visible motorcycle parts, the exhausts are placed differently on MOTOGP bikes? What effect does this have on the bike's performance?

      Because these bikes other than 2 wheels and maybe a certain displacement.. Have literally anything in common with a production bike. As Simon says, Akroprovic literally have to fit these exhaust in the permitted space provided by the manufacturer.. (Why each MotoGP bike is different)
      On top of this space, if each 4 cylinder engines exhaust is split into 2x 2-into-1 systems... you would then assume each of these will need to have an equal length from exhaust port, to where it merges into each exhaust. then generally to its tip.
