This is a real reinforcement of all I read now about protein after 50. Well said and well presented-I loved the suggestions on meals w/numbers!! I’m very happy to see this nonjudgmental delivery and great info without trying to scare anyone! I did a protein count 8 months ago before I started changing my diet, and I was horrified at how little protein I was getting. But it was so obvious because I could not get down on the floor or stand up from sitting without struggling. I had knee issue and was sick of feeling lethargic. I went all in on counting grams ..supplemental protein powder occasionally and daily collagen peptides. After a week I felt like a child inside! My mood was through the roof! I started yoga, walking (added a weighted vest SLOWLY), and some weights. Now I can stand up from getting on the floor without touching furniture and I went from planks at 30 seconds to now over 2 minutes. My mood feels euphoric.. all thanks to protein addition. Sarcopenia is devastating as you get older and protein really helps! So many people think they get a lot.. but I think it is shocking when you see actual numbers!! And the new guidelines for over 50 have almost doubled! Now I can’t speak to weight loss because I am very thin, but it did help with the constant swelling of my legs (gone) and belly pooch (gone). I always have been careful (mostly vegan for years) but during the lockdown I got on BAD habits of too much sugar, not enough anything good and too many glasses of “therapeutic” wine. When I started the protein, I eliminated any and ALL foods with added sugar (I am vigilant!) and stopped all alcohol. I have had 1 glass of champagne at Christmas dinner, but that is it. If I crave sugar I drink water.. then maybe a small fruit serving. Works like magic. I think most cravings are thirst in disguise! ( ha! This is what I tell myself!😂) I look forward to watching your clever videos and getting more tips! I had forgotten several snacks I could add painlessly to cut fine on the high protein meals! Thank you! FYI.. I am 75 years old and 115 pounds with zero medication and zero pain!! Hooray!!!
This is an absolutely fabulous discussion on protein! Higher protein intake than the RDA guidelines is widely recommended in the research I’ve done, also. (Same disclaimer, I’m not a registered nutritionist!) From personal experience, six weeks ago I wanted to lose some weight so I started tracking my protein intake and made changes to assure I was getting enough. The results have been amazing. I feel more mental clarity, have more energy, feel satiated and experience few cravings during the day. To my amazement, I have steadily lost 4-5 pounds. In all my memory, I’ve never lost weight so easily or felt so good and feel this is a shift in the way I eat, rather than a “weight loss program”.
OMG YAY!!!!!!! This is what I'm trying to teach women over 50. Diets don't work and we have to feed our bodies with the good stuff so it can do its magic. THANK you so much for confirming my message Big Hug to you 😘
