    While it is important to keep a mental discipline regarding your rod position at 10-2, your arc will begin to widen slightly beyond this point as your distance increases. However, it's important to have this mental discipline in place so that your cast won't degrade. You will find that your arc will widen organically to near 9 - 3 (or 170 degrees max) as shown in this video and as you continue to generate line speed with greater distance.

    Basic fly rod casting is not hard if you follow the advice this gentleman is suggesting. The basic concept, I feel, is to let the rod do all of the hard work and you just aim and guide the line. When casting gets tricky is when you start working in very tight surroundings. But those guys who can do it have spent many years perfecting their tskill o where it looks easy, but you can be certain that they lost a lot of flies, tippet and tempers before they perfected it.

    • @FlyFishDan
      @FlyFishDan  ปีที่แล้ว

      I would recommend investing in a high-quality single-handed fly rod. In my experience, casting with a Euro rod is not as effortless when compared to a medium-fast action overhand fly rod. These two types of rods are simply designed differently.
      I have recently designed my own fly rod, incorporating all the features you would typically find in a $1000 rod, but at a much more affordable price. It is a custom-made rod that costs half the price. If you're interested, I invite you to visit fishonrods.com and check it out.

    Roll casting is far better to learn for beginners. I've noticed in most fishing situations you don't even have the space to back cast and the double haul can be a brain fart for non experienced anglers and people who aren't necessarily ambidextrous. The Roll cast is a smooth motion that gets you enough distance when you become proficient and you can swing streamers, fish Dries, euro nymph or indicator fish Easley with this cast

    • @imhoggbox918
      @imhoggbox918 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Good point that helps a lot when you don't pay attention what's above you and with that fly line that tree could be way behind you and still snag it 🤣

      @@FlyFishDan Hey Dan, I would like to tell you somethin about the rod I use. I use a glass fiber rod, and you in this video are using a carbon rod. It makes a big difference. Especially for new casters like me it can be a pain in the ass trying to get a carbon technique into a glass rod. With a glass rod (I learned this yesterday) you must be slower and smoother on the power. Only at the last little bit of the forwars cast you must power out hard. I love your videos ❤ Keep doing them!!

    Adding any mention of the double haul to a beginner is overly complicating this. The focus should be on the following. 1. Position the caster so they can see their line being cast. 2. Discuss loading the line and use the hammer analogy (drive the hammer to the nail and tap the nail in) - you only cast in the opposite direction once the line is loaded (what happens if you go forward before the line is loaded = bad) 3. The line follows the rod tip (if the rod tip dips, bad things happen... if you put an arc into the tip, you get a wider line arc). Both the thumb position and mention of 10 and 2 are good though. I would redo this video to be honest.
