    Hey, can I just say, I appreciate the work you put into this hobby. As a newcomer, it's immensely helpful to not only have someone who passionately describes the equipment, but goes to such lengths to ensure that we can hear the equipment. It's also reassuring that you're so positive and humble in the pursuit of the hobby. I aspire to approach Vinyl with your attitude.
    Thank you for your videos. I cant wait to see your channel grow.

      Dear Buddy Dale🤗, enjoy your journey!...
      I am very happy and humbled to have received your blessings and kind support. Thank you for spending time with me and writing to me Brother👋😄!!!
      The efforts I spent on these is down to only one reason, and that is the friendships I owe to the many warm friends in the very warm vinyl community. The other lovely guys are Paul😄 at "X Junkie NL" from The Netherlands, and Paul😄 of "Barakapdub" from Texas. Yes, both are named Paul💪💪!!!
      I wish you a beautiful and rewarding vinyl'ing journey ahead with many precious musical records🎶🎵🎶🎶 coming to your home, and many international great friends to come into your life💪💪💪. I am sure you will have both. Warmest Regards Brother and we can catch up anytime again🎶🎵🎶🎶!!!

    Dear Ian
    I watched your latest video with my mouth open because I did not believe, could not believe, that a cartridge with a conical stylus was good for anything but playing 78 and 45 rpm mono records.
    Therefore, I have to thank you for opening my eyes, ears and mind to this new reality.
    Until your next enthusiastically produced and informative video.

      Dear Buddy Bob :-D thank you for your kind time again!!! My apologies for being late in my reply coz TH-cam do miss out notifying me of some messages here and there. Sorry Buddy. Really sorry.
      Yes, it is indeed surprising for me too...that a cart with a conical stylus can sound so much better (more detailed than an elliptical one!)... hehheh!! You are right!! Conical stylus can actually go beyond 78 and 45 mono records!!! Amazing...
      Brother, enjoy your weekend!!!

      Hi Ian
      No need to apologise, I realise that first and foremost you are a family man and family above everything else must come first.
      However, I also realise that your dedication to your hi-fi hobby, and service to the world, is a calling that few will hear and even fewer will ever be able to relay as well as you do. Therefore, as long as you continue to produce such interesting and informative videos then that's OK.

    To buy the Goldring E2 was a mistake of mine. The left channel always showed up being louder, than the right channel after recording songs. All my other cartridges, the AT91, AT95E and AT95EX don't have this problem.

    Ian, you're simply the best one on TH-cam, your tests are actual, current and most accurate! You have a great life philosophy Ian and I and many people here appreciate a lot all your efforts. In almost the same manner I began the journey in early 70's with an old Thorens 160/Shure, Quad 33/303 and AR6 loudspeakers and still is driven by the very same spirit of the vinyl, all these years but with help of just a little better equipment. You do a very good job for new vinyl community and I wish you and your people only the best. Lo Greetings

    Hi, Ian! So great to see another video! That footage of the Chinese New Year reminded me fondly of being a kid in the late 70’s/early 80’s, when my grandfather owned a butcher shop in Boston, MA. There was a parade of dragons dancing down the streets and a ton and of fireworks going off everywhere. It was actually quite frightening for a little kid, but I still have great memories of it as I grew older. Lol. 😁 Thanks for the great vids again, Ian! I’ve been loving my Goldring 1006 for a few months now, and I’m aware of what amazing carts they make.

    The really good cartridge from the new VM95 line is the ML version. The EN version is just marginal better
    than the E version with a bonded stylus. Imho the EN has the worst price/quality ratio in the entire line.

    • @cdeaker
      @cdeaker 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I bought a VM540ML before the VM95 line was out - the microline really digs out the detail. I would have bought the VM95 ML if was available at the time. There isn’t much price difference between the EN & ML VM95 styluses (about $50) but the step up in performance is huge

    • @andymill32
      @andymill32 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep, the vm95ml is a fantastic sounding cart/stylus, I have a 2m Blue, MP 110, Grado Blue 3 and the 95ml, the 95 ml is by far the best and amazing value for money (bought another one as back up)

      Brother talk about the food and variety in Singapore...we are spoilt for choices as so many of them offering everything from around the world are all here and squeezed in and populating every corner here.... we must be thankful to the relative good peace and prosperity we have... coz I find Singaporeans too spoilt for choices for food... it is actually very difficult to choose when so many different types of food ARE easily available. I feel the Singaporeans should be thankful and not take peace and stability for granted, and cherish every morsel of food that is available.

      Dear Buddy Bob :-D enjoying your MP-110, Marantz SR7005 and Martin Logan SL3s!!!
      Hehheh..... you love spicy food I can conclude!!!!
      Both soups are amazingly tasty, and the tastefulness and herbal concoctions in both simply took my by surprise..... THEY ARE GOOD!!!! My whole family, sons, their girlfriends, and even my parents, really took to them.... even my wife now is hooked. Hahaha, our familiar and kind brother Martin is right about the spicyness...IF YOU drink that boiling oil on the sides!!! But amazingly again, this boiling red oil is not just one-dimensional spicy: lots of herbs' tastes have also gone into it. It is just amazing. The water soluble herbal taste and the oil soluble herbal taste are separately GREAT to taste. I would still go slow on the oily part for health reasons, but we do approach from the boiling centre so as to scoop out a lot of the non-oily reddish soup and drink that part. Very, very nice and tasty.
      Drop by and I shall give you both a treat!!! :-D
      Warmest Regards my two dearest friends and buddies.

      @@HiViNywschannel You can find a number of interesting New-old-stock cartridges and styli in Europe at online dealers like www.thakker.eu (Germany) or www.pickupnaalden.com (Netherlands). Especially the latter is also a good source in case you need a replacement stylus for a rare or old cartridge.
      Yes, I'm very pleased with the MP-100. I originally bought it when I accidently smashed my MP-30 stylus and at that time did not have the budget to buy a replacement stylus. Now I use it for playing used LPs of unknown quality, but it's a really good cartridge for its price, as long as the music does not get too busy (e.g. large ensemble tutti).
      Btw. Nagaoka cartridges became really expensive in Europe during the last 1-2 years.

    Initially I was surprised to see this comparison. Here in the UK the VM95EN goes for £100, whereas the E2 is around £75. I thought the AT would wipe the floor with the E2, but apparently not! I actually bought the E3 version recently, and again for a lot cheaper than the VM95EN. It has been great so far, however the capacitance it requires is way lower than my Onkyo amp's phono stage, so next stop is an external phono stage to get the best out of it.
    By the way, I had a great visit to Singapore over Christmas and visited the famous Adelphi :D lots of wonderful equipment, however the record shop you recommended to visit in the basement was closed both times. Never mind! Thanks for another great video.

    I use the Blue Note reissues to evaluate cartridges. The sound must be at least clear enough to reveal the frequent tape overload on drums without further blunting the bass drum and floor tom and making the cymbals sound even rougher. The Goldring E2 passed this test; the A-T VM95EN did not.

  • @johnhpalmer6098
    @johnhpalmer6098 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Hey, nice review, as always Ian. Yes, I could tell the difference between the two, though the differences in many ways was not huge, the areas where the E2 edges further out than the AT cart is in clarity, separation and the attacks, which bring son a bolder, punchier overall performance. When you played the section from McCoy Tyner's LP with trumpet and sax, definitely could ascertain the separation of the two with the Goldring over the AT cart.
    While the AT cart was not bad, it could be better, but the Goldring outperforms it even with the "handicap" of the spherical stylus.
    As other's have already intimated, I suspected already you were hinting at those "pesky" Nagaokas, the 110 or 150. :-)

    Dear Ian,
    Nice review!
    I think that the prices of Goldring and Nagaoka are varying depending on the region. I Europe the Goldrings are much cheaper than the equivalent Nagaokas. For example, in Romania, the E2 costs around 85 dollars, the E3 is 105 and the Nagaoka 110 is 180. The same difference is between the 1042 (around 330 dollars) and MP 150 (400). That is why I am watching your reviews with great interest. By the way, is the E2 better than Elektra (which I still enjoy very much)?
    All the best,
    Catalin

      @HiViNywschannel  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dear Catalin, if you buy the Nagaoka MP-110 direct from the ebay sellers in Japan, they should come in at about USD108 inclusive of shipping ~453Leu , ~95 euros.
      www.ebay.com/itm/Nagaoka-MP-110-Stereo-Cartridge-Cartridge-single-elliptical-chip-bonded-diamond/143119819583?epid=691141298&hash=item21529b233f:g:lS0AAOSwV0NcWr5I:rk:1:pf:0
      I hope this helps... guys in Singapore too buy direct from these Japanese ebay sellers too... there are several of them. I trust this "emjmusic" seller most.
      :-D
      My Elektra is close to the end of its stylus life, and I dare not do an AB comparison with the E2 coz it would not be fair then... apologies my friend. But very valid concern.... I have the same too :-D . Coz there are still Elektra replacement styli available in most places too.

    Given that AT makes both cartridges. I'm surprised there's that much difference between the two, especially in that the Goldring with the spherical stylus holds its own so well. You'd think AT would want to keep that kind of an advantage for itself.

    • @HiViNywschannel
      @HiViNywschannel  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hehheh...you are right..."we'd think AT would want to keep that kind of advantage for itself"... But i thought about it Brother Larry :-D ...Probably it goes the same as for dealers for most other things in the industry:
      The OEM manufacturer would try to OEM make for other companies, and allow the other companies to flourish, OTHERWISE, the other companies would suffer in sales and stop all agreements with the OEM manufacturer.
      Even tyre companies, e.g. Falken tyres are sold more expensive at the Falken distributor and shop here, while the same model ones are sold cheaper at the Falken dealers (who get their stocks from the Falken distributor) :-D !!!

I cannot use the MP110 on my techies 1200mk2 because the combined weight of the Headshell and cartridge are to heavy for me to achieve a floating balance in order to set tracking weight. @@HiViNywschannel Hello Ian. After seeing MP500, my eyes widened and now I'm on high alert! Oh my, I can't wait. It's priced out of my comfort zone, but if the review is favorable, I may have to bite the bullet. I trust your in depth and honest reviews and my last three purchases - the MP 150, MP 200 stylus and the Schiit Mani did not disappoint and I thank you for your direction. But this leaves me with a dilema. The MP500 and a used Technics SL 1200 series cost roughly the same. What am I to do?!!! Currently, I use a vintage TT that resolves well when paired with the Mani and allows me to discern the differences between cartridges. What upgrade makes sense to you? Keep up the great work. The VC loves you!
