Russ, when you suggested the 1x1 screen, and they came out with the first cube were you like: "NO! with the d-pad on the top..." I think I can finally say, there is an all winner linux device for me.
Uh no, because the literal single thing a 1:1 screen was good at was playing DS/3DS, but this doesn't have a touch screen and it's weak as shit so it's literally useless for those systems. This is an actually stupid product, and I don't say that ever because I'm a fan of different form factors for everyone. Everything anyone would buy this system for is better served buying one of the many 4:3 H700 systems.
@@GlitteredUp4EasterWrong, this screen is great for vertical arcade games. It’s one of the few things I play on the RGB30. I don’t believe in one device for all and use them for what they perform best with.
I wish we had this layout, build & Dpad on a slightly wider screen to make it 4:3. Oh well, will have to wait for them to eventually make it randomly when it’s time to drop a new one every 2 weeks.
The issue is that there does not appear to be any large 4:3 screens. Unless one of these companies stump up significant investment to produce one (and ultimately have to price their device to accommodate that) we are now stuck with whatever workarounds they can find, and a seemingly infinite number of devices doing the same-ish things to keep the market ticking over.
@@TheRealAlpha2 true, but I’d rather have the height of the display filled up for a bigger screen overall, like a 4x5.33 inch rather than 4x4 inch screen. Would have a much larger image for 4:3 content that way and best of both worlds in terms of gameboy, gba & psp looking good on the screen without too much black bars on the sides. Would just make it more of a good all rounder than one specially suited to certain aspect ratios.

@@bobbylucas13 the only problem is that no one seems to make a high resolution (In this case a 720p screen) in those dimensions, or if they do the cost for a custom panel might push it into a higher price bracket that makes it less budget friendly and not really a viable product. After a certain size it seems like they all just become 16:9 panels and then you have the aspect ratio issue all over again from a different direction.
This is probably the best review I could have hoped for this device. Thank you for going so in-depth! Personally I'm hoping for a re-release of the Arc with a stronger SoC for more Saturn & Dreamcast emulation.
It's an RGB30 with better controls and without the hand cramps, basically an immediate purchase for me since it fixes the only two issues I have with my previous favorite handheld. As someone who has owned an RGB30 for about a year and loves it, I have a feeling that the people at Anbernic considered the flatter form factor but realized that a number of people wouldn't be able to use it very much without developing claw hands and added the ergonomic shape to the back
@11:02 .. Aaapy Eskapey? was this a easter egg pronounciation to test the viewer? love your vids the info is amazing and the breakdowns of the consoles are really indepth.
I think its a good thing that thy create all these form factors. In the future they can use the same form factor but upgrade the cpu/thumbsticks and other parts.
We need a yearly update video to tell us what the multi device quiver should be. We ALL have several of these devices-- lets see an update video of the best device to play each system on for the many many of us that are willing to have a true quiver of devices to play them all...
You dont have to specificall have a 5V charger to receive 5V. It's default voltage for any usb charger. Any other voltage (9V, 12V, etc) requires a communication between usb charger brick and device. Also the device itself decides what current to draw.
Fact is people burn up their devices by using high wattage chargers. The devices do not limit the charging wattage for some reason. Use a basic charger and you’re fine.

@@jasonleeman5817 Some people don't get this point. Plus as someone who wants to play as many PS2 and GameCube games as possible having a RG-CUBE XX for my more Retro games really helps.
Still I feel like there's a tier between $60 and $170 that isn't quite being served with either model. Maybe a slightly higher performance Linux-only model that can actually play N64, around the $100 price point. That would be an endgame handheld for me. I don't need something that runs Android. This model with better performance and maybe Hall Effect sticks...
@@wewd Interesting. I would also prefer Linux but an android device is fairly easy to switch to if you already have your roms on your phone and know how to set things up.
I have picked up every single 1:1 device released because I love how flexible the screen is. This will be the first one I’m passing on. My go-to is the A1 Unicorn at this point.
A 4:3 is much more flexible though. THe only thing a 1:1 screen was actually good at was dual screen games, and this is useless for dual screen games. So how is that flexible exactly?
I still stand by my RG35XX Plus..controls feel good, small and compact looking like a mini Gameboy, and I am not missing one or more joysticks for the GBA/GBC/GB/SNES/NES games that I'm playing.
Love the review as always Russ! Was hoping this would replace my RGB30, and while I think it's definitely better I appreciate the candidness to help me decide that it's not enough of an upgrade for me to make that jump just yet.
No way! I love that they made another 4×4" screen! RGB30 is one of my favorites for that reason. So, is this new CubeXX a good enough upgrade of the RGB30.
I do love how thorough you are with your review, but I'm disappointed you never talk about ghosting / response times of these screens. It's one of the key quality measures beyond size, especially for 2D games where the sharp pixel borders can create noticeable motion artifacts. The square screens and 4 inch screens are noticeably worse at this than most of the 3.5 inch screen devices I have. It's one of the biggest benefits of oled screens, for the increased motion clarity.
Hey mister Handheld man, how about a video for the best mobile ways to play ScumVM? I've seen so many forms and factor to play basically all retro consoles perfectly, but what about my beloved Day of the Tentacle, Monkey Island and Beneath a steel sky?
What makes me happy about the consoles I already have is that all new consoles have had basically the same exact performance for the last 2 years or so. I never felt safer with my current consoles. Anbernic is shooting themselves in the foot by never upgrading the performance. People who upgrade just for the sake of it are also getting tired.
They're just taking from the available chips already out there and they need to hit a certain price point to make their money, so they're probably either waiting for better chips to come out or for the better chips that are out to get cheaper.
I mean its pretty much just a shell swap to the 35xx h/sp/40h/v etc. They are all the same. Its just different handlings. But the screen here is a really good thing. I think this is the "comfortable" 35xxH, with a 4inch square screen, which in itself is a good value proposition. Now... the thing costs 60bucks. Thats a really good offer. Now we are cooking here.
But you're pretending like the square screen actually helps anything. It doesn't and just adds unnecessary height. Maybe if it could play DS/3ds games, but it's useless for those.
I'd like this square screen for vert shmups with its high d-pad position but with a CPU that can do Dreamcast 100%. That's all I "should" ever need and I'm in! And if it can save a buck please drop the RGB lights, tasteless bling.
Do you always go over how the controls on these devices? The calibrated and raw input section is so important to me as I love playing N64 games and love for a smooth controls experience, thank you for covering the controls part!
Thank you Russ for going into the detail with the analog sticks. The presence of cardinal snapping was what I hoped would improve, and I don't think the software hack is enough so it's a pass for me. Love your reviews
34:55 The problem lies with the cable, not with the charger. Try with the USB-C to USB-C cable from the RG552 with all the chargers that you have. This is the only cable that it will work with.
This seems to be the rgb30 killer (though slightly lass powerful). I'd really like to see a custom flat back with in line triggers for it to be as... Flat lol
Looks like you’ll get your wish with the 406p coming next! Screen and sticks from the 406v in a compact horizontal form factor. If they put the dpad up top (they won’t), it would be the perfect device.
I like that anbernic keeps releasing more form factors for the H700 that is good for people who doesn't have a unit with that chipset yet. Since I already own my 35xxh, getting another H700 unit is not that appealing to me anymore
Did you have any issues with the default shaders for some systems causing performance issues? When playing SNES through RA, the default pixellate shader seems to make games run at 30fps for me on my Cube XX. Just curious if that was a known issue?
Here's what I want: RGB10x D-pad and facebuttons (shape and size) RG Cube XX screen and shape PS1 (not dual shock) style stacked shoulder buttons (without pivots) Either usable sticks, or no sticks at all great battery life
Thanks for that! My only question is about fast forward, which is great on the other H700 devices. Will the 720x720 screen slow down those speeds because of the resolution running?
I love your reviews brother. Honestly I just want a device that can play GameCube and PS2 for a reasonable price and I can also play with Bluetooth controllers and plug it into my tv.
I'm getting older and blinder. I have an RG35XX H and find it a little to small to be easily readable. I think it would be cool when you review screen sizes to include text size/readability. Well, at least when it comes to the smaller screens.
This is actually a nice option ngl. 1:1 device with better build quality than the RGB30 around the same price range. Also the D Pad is in the right spot unlike the more expensive cube
this model shows anbernic can make a good 1:1 handheld. now theres a gap between this and the cube. something in between with higher build quality, mild performance bump (RK3566), and controls (hall sticks) would be a nice middle ground imo.
Oh man Anbernic is really trying to finish all their H700's, like fit it in whatever form factor, at this point i wouldn't be surprised if they eve make an RG4XX SP Cube
The cardinal snapping is a real problem on the RG556. I've been struggling to aim in my cricket games, so it removes all the skill and strategy and makes getting a wicket or restricting scoring a matter of luck when bowling. Batting is okay. Shooting and racing games can be a challenge too, i'm almost always a little off of where I intend to aim/be. If Gamma can perform a software fix, why can't Anbernic? Or why can't they partner with him in preparing an OTA update? It's their most premium, basically Android flagship device. It gives pause when thinking about purchasing other devices because the post-purchase support feels... uncertain. I mean, even confirming how long the device would be supported removes some of that anxiety. And while I don't mind tinkering and mods, nobody wants to void their warranty when they only have one device (if there is a warranty).
How does this stack up to the TrimUI Smart Pro? Just judging off your reviews, the screen quality looks better on the TSP for GBA games and the TSP still looks like it has an edge on DS games since the screen is big enough to not have to swap screens while playing. What are your thoughts?
It's 2067. Anbernic just released a new console. It runs on Linux, and can play up to PS1, with some PSP and Dreamcast.
What chip does it have ? Or let me guess...
It only has 1 stick, but worry the next one'll probably have 2!

If I decent heatsink was added I think that even 3566 could be able to emulate 3DS games.
At this point just buy a DS, you can f ind them under 70$ everywhere and a R4 for like less than 15$ 🤷♂️
Just ordered mine in that slick retro gray - been looking for a 1:1 aspect device for awhile now and this device hits the sweet spot! Thanks for yet another thorough review Russ, you're the hero we need!
This is gonna be my first emu device! Started watching early this year, but have held off from picking anything up. Between the early bird sale and a screen that is really good for Pico-8, I think this is the device for me! Edit: I actually got the 40xxV cause I play a lot of SNES and would like the big image for 4:3 content! Pico-8 still looks great!
Enjoy not being able to charge it except with the packed-in cable.
@@claughlinoh no! It can only be charged with a usb c to a cable?!?! What a tragedy!!!! I only have 15 of those lying around the house!!! What will I ever doooo!!!???

Am I the only one that can appreciate how Anbernic makes several different form factors at an entry level price? Even if the chip is being reused a lot, it's cheap and it gives people options, especially people looking for their first handheld
Another favorite band T-shirt! Love me some NOFX! Saw them a couple times one their last tour ever last summer.
Russ, when you suggested the 1x1 screen, and they came out with the first cube were you like: "NO! with the d-pad on the top..."
I think I can finally say, there is an all winner linux device for me.
@GlitteredUp4Easter did you actually watch the video?
@@GlitteredUp4EasterWrong, this screen is great for vertical arcade games. It’s one of the few things I play on the RGB30. I don’t believe in one device for all and use them for what they perform best with.
@@Bob_Smith19 that’s definitely something I think is exciting about it, playing in tate mode is fine… but this screen is ideal.
Just buy the black one, you'll never notice the bezels on 4:3 content.
Yea because the literal single thing a 1:1 screen was good at was playing DS/3DS, but this doesn't have a touch screen and it's weak as shit so it's literally useless for those systems.
@@jennika753 I'm about to email a suggestion to Anbernic about a new RG-ARC Handheld with the RK3576 processor and Analog Sticks.
feels great watching a video that came out 15 seconds ago
It's an RGB30 with better controls and without the hand cramps, basically an immediate purchase for me since it fixes the only two issues I have with my previous favorite handheld. As someone who has owned an RGB30 for about a year and loves it, I have a feeling that the people at Anbernic considered the flatter form factor but realized that a number of people wouldn't be able to use it very much without developing claw hands and added the ergonomic shape to the back
I wouldn’t go that far. They already had the molds and decided to repurpose them.
when you said the name of that hame about fleeing simians, i was reminded why i’ve been subscribed 💚🤣
I really liked the overlays. Pretty neat 😎.
Could only hope, it might lower the coast... but I bet they just design a new one so they can charge more.
I love this review but ill be honest you had me smiling when i saw one of my favorite capcom beat em ups on that screen. Knights of the Round table!!!
Isn't it just Knights of the Round?
@tog2842 ya it is thank you for the correction
Ah careful Russ. You had a Fire Emblem title screen showing for a couple of seconds
I noticed that too and came to the comments. I think some people forget that that IS a first party franchise lol.
Since I didn't get the original RG cube (because of the price and the android software) this will make the perfect replacement for the RGB30
Praying that Anbernic gives us a RG50XX that has a 5 inch, 4:3 display with better heat distribution and controls. I think that would be my dream handheld
Or revamp the rg552 and give it a stronger chip
Edit: OH SNAP! Someone made a knock off anbernic RG50XX and it's on Amazon! Lol
@@ardnehsan I definitely want to email Anbernic about RG552 and RG503 successors.
By the time you're getting a 5 inch screen you're probably looking for more than than a H700 chip and 480p.
I'm not in the market for these handhelds, but I can help myself with clicking these videos in curiosity. I have a Steam Deck, softmodded DSi, and 3ds... so I'm pretty well covered. I guess I just appreciate cool new tech.
Love that white color! I noticed that the XX has a bigger bottom bezel than the original cube as well. Also shout out to the Vaer watch your wearing Russ. I have that same watch in 36mm and I love it!
Hey thanks, you're the first one to notice my new watch! I decided to ditch my Apple Watch, it's been a constant nuisance for the past couple of years. My only complaint about the Vaer is that the numbers are slightly yellowish due to their lume material, otherwise it's perfect!
Latest muOS fixes the joystick software issue
But you have to wait for it to be compiled for the system, apparently.
@@TheRealAlpha2 was mostly referring to the 40xx clips about the joystick, and that once muOS is ready for the cube
I'm guessing the 35xxh or 40xxh image might boot on the cubexx but don't have a cubexx yet 😭

Wow glad I held off buying the RG Cube (which was over-powered and over-priced for what I wanted it for).
The rg cube can play every arcade shmup... This can barely play a quarter of them... Completely defeats the purpose of the tall screen
@@fillerbunnyninjashark271 Can you give a few examples of which arcade games? I've never really been a fan of arcade-mash-the-coin-button-games.
Very great and interresting review, depth and complete. Thanks!!
Exactly what I wanted from the cube
Thx Russ your review help me decided to get rgcubexx.
@@GlitteredUp4Easter Yikes. Bad take. Go watch reviews for any of the 4” 720p 1:1 devices out there.
Laughs in vertical shmups.
I still stand by my RG35XX Plus..controls feel good, small and compact looking like a mini Gameboy, and I am not missing one or more joysticks for the GBA/GBC/GB/SNES/NES games that I'm playing.
Went to the final NOFX tour, it rained both days but it was a blast!
Awesome review as always! Still waiting for the RP5 review, I’ve been holding out buying it until I see your review on it 😂
Love the review as always Russ!
Thank you for the review Russ it helped me decide my first the firts Anbernic console I'm gonna buy.
Another great video Russ!
11:03 “Ap-pay Es-cappay” 😂😂
The same thing happened before the leap to newer chips.
@@GlitteredUp4EasterHow many times are you going to post the same comment? Not everyone shares your opinion.
I'd like this square screen for vert shmups with its high d-pad position but with a CPU that can do Dreamcast 100%. That's all I "should" ever need and I'm in! And if it can save a buck please drop the RGB lights, tasteless bling.
All I want is a better feeling rgb30. This looks like it will work.
I personally like the no storage cards included option, I usually replace with the largest SanDisk card supported anyways.
Do you always go over how the controls on these devices? The calibrated and raw input section is so important to me as I love playing N64 games and love for a smooth controls experience, thank you for covering the controls part!
Been waiting on this!
I have too, despite what some Screeching Manchildren in the comments section want me to believe.
THE SEGA STYLE D-PAD IS SO GOOD 😍
Good video brother, picking one or two of these up for my collection when it releases.
Thank you Russ for going into the detail with the analog sticks. The presence of cardinal snapping was what I hoped would improve, and I don't think the software hack is enough so it's a pass for me. Love your reviews
What I appreciate about this handheld is that if one wanted to get the RG Arc this is basically the better option
No it’s not, you buy the ARC for the six button layout. It’s a Sega emulator first and foremost. The Cube XX is for everything.
@@Bob_Smith19 Obviously yes, it's the same reason why I got the Arc, but with the Cube being for everything it does feel like a more sensible choice
Thank you for another great band shirt Russ.
34:55 The problem lies with the cable, not with the charger. Try with the USB-C to USB-C cable from the RG552 with all the chargers that you have.
This is the only cable that it will work with.
Great vid, informative. I'm looking into getting a standard retro handheld, I dabbled with the raspberry pi 4 for a while and that was cool
This seems to be the rgb30 killer (though slightly lass powerful). I'd really like to see a custom flat back with in line triggers for it to be as... Flat lol
Russ I love that taken your suggestion, hell I love the form factor for this ship.
Would love to have an RG Cube xx but with the 4:3 screen of the RG40xx h
Did you have any issues with the default shaders for some systems causing performance issues? When playing SNES through RA, the default pixellate shader seems to make games run at 30fps for me on my Cube XX. Just curious if that was a known issue?
Man im burnt out on this scene and I don't even make weekly video's, I just watch and comment to support rgc
I got the cube a few weeks ago and have been having no issue throwing it into my pocket.
Here's what I want:
RGB10x D-pad and facebuttons (shape and size)
RG Cube XX screen and shape
PS1 (not dual shock) style stacked shoulder buttons (without pivots)
Either usable sticks, or no sticks at all
great battery life
Thanks for that!
The vertical shooters look pretty sweet on this one. 😊
Russ is a saint and a scholar.😮
Oh man Anbernic is really trying to finish all their H700's, like fit it in whatever form factor, at this point i wouldn't be surprised if they eve make an RG4XX SP Cube
Im with you on the boxier design being better
This definitely something to worry about. I'm going to Email Anbernic about these issues too.
NOFX! We would have been friends in another life haha. Always rocking amazing band shirts!
if they had a black version, those variable bezels would look a lot nicer on the photos, but yeah, in person, they don't matter.
How does this stack up to the TrimUI Smart Pro? Just judging off your reviews, the screen quality looks better on the TSP for GBA games and the TSP still looks like it has an edge on DS games since the screen is big enough to not have to swap screens while playing. What are your thoughts?
